So, Ryze... how to?

I know you're probably expecting me to hate on Ryze, but actually I was curious about the champion since his championship skin is out.

However, I played a couple of games on him and while I think his kit seems pretty simple (use E on anything nearby or champion, hit with Q) I feel like I'm missing something.

He has burst, but not the kind of burst an actual burst champion has. He has some crowd control... but not anywhere near a typical mage (only get the root with W if you use E first and it doesn't have the same power as Syndra push or Veigar wall). His R is a non combat ability which is pretty cool, but also frequently has no impact because of lack of practical uses.

So... is Ryze like secretly amazing and I just don't know it? Cause I honestly have no idea how to play this champion, but at first glance I'm not seeing it.

Any pro Ryze players out there with tips? Ryze

He's always been secretly amazing. Needs you to have a better grasp on the basics than your opponent. At the points where they have just as much, Ryze's ceiling provides higher yield and begins tempo from the start, as well as being able to constantly carry because his power isn't tied to the use of his Ult.

Wave control, teamfight positioning, microplay, macroplay, build pathing, split pushing, dueling, etc.

It could be argued that he used to be amazing.

but they recently made some major changes to his kit to "simplify" it so what Asherenyx said doesn't really apply anymore.

Ryze has had the most reworks of any champion because Riot couldn't figure out a way to balance him so in his last rework they took away most of the depth of his kit and left him in an underwhelming state just to make sure he doesn't cause any more problems.

he's one of the worst champions in the game for casual play

so how to ryze: don't ryze

Keep in mind, his Q resets whenever you cast your E or W. So you can actually get a surprising amount of damage out by quickly landing Q-E-Q-W-Q-E-Q. His burst damage is definitely nothing to sniff at.

Ryze's skill ceiling and power comes from his macro play, not micro play. His mechanics are very simple, but his ability to clear waves and roam is outmatched, letting him make plays all over the map. The pressure Ryze exerts on other lanes creates opportunities for his teammates to take fights, skirmishes, towers, and objectives they couldn't before. The problem is that you need your teammates to actually be decent. If your teammates don't have the sense to try to take objectives or set up good fights, your pressure isn't worth anything.

Ideally, when you hit 6, call your jungler over for a gank to either kill your laner or force them back, then use your ult to take you both to a different lane and gank that one. That play alone can swing two whole lanes in your team's favor and cement an early lead. You want to look for opportunities to use your ult whenever it's available to gank other lanes or pick fights in the jungle.

Ward like hell. Not only are you an immobile mage with inconsistent CC, so you need the protection from ganks, but you need to keep tabs on the enemy jungler's movement. If you know where they are, then you know when it's safe to shove and roam and which lane you should gank.

Play jihn. Learn to run around and hurt people. Then go to ryze. Theres not much like him. Manage your position keep vigilant eye on minions minion positions and player positions and then you get crafty. Your early damagw without items isnt laughable but hes not a early game assassin. Build for the late game where every combo you throw out does around 3000 damage and then snowball. It dosent happen much anymore and i miss the satisfaction from bouncing my E off minions but. They did make his kit much easier to play while keeping the idea of a late game mage intact. Just remember your spells all work together and if you get craft with them you can really end a whole mans career
