Why DOES Ahri's Q deal True Damage on the way back?

Serious question here.

She's supposed to be an Assassin-flavored Mage, right? And Assassins are typically supposed to be using their superior mobility and target selection to gun for soft, high priority targets? What need does she have for an anti-tank damage type? It really doesn't make a great deal of sense apart from just being additional power.

Personally, it's not the true damage I'm disliking about her Q.

I'm not saying it's strong, or weak, or anything else. Just that it's weird. It's this random thing thrown into her kit and-

It's thematic. She's throwing a soul stealing orb at you, so if she gets a solid hit then you take true damage. It's not a significant part of her >damage anyway.

-that's not what a kumiho's spirit ball does. I mean, to be fair, these critters were supposed to seduce people and then eat their organs. But that's a bit difficult to portray in a video game.

And it isn't a significant portion of her damage. It's a weird portion of her damage. Why is it a thing?

I find that the movement speed boost is more weird than the true damage.

It's kind of like Ekko's Q, where you get a nice boost in damage if you can land the skillshot on the return trip. Instead of having a higher AP ratio, Ahri gets true damage. Why? I believe it's because she's the kiting mage supposedly, so it helps her damage the frontline a little bit in teamfights. Also helps against midlaners who rush hexdrinker or chalice, allowing her to get a little more "oomph!" if she can land the true damage portion instead of getting it mitigated.

To be fair, Ahri does poorly against tanks as it is; she can't burst them and she more or less tickles them. The true damage helps with that, also just helps with her overall damage. Don't forget its on the travel back, if she throws it out just dodge it.
