A Thought About Winrates

How skewed are they by pick orders and counter picking?

I mean, especially long before the rework, common wisdom is to never first pick Garen unless you want the opponent to counter pick you and screw you over. On the other hand however, if you see an easy lane to pick into, and/or Riven, you should take advantage of the extreme early game leverage and take Garen if you know how to turn that early game lead into a victory for the team.

In practice, you don't tend to pick Garen unless you are already confident in winning, and this could do a whole lot to skew his win rate positive.

As an aside, I'm far more familiar with S4 Garen than I am post rework Garen, so excuse me if the example is totally lost on you guys, but the idea should still be the same: Doesn't the win rate argument make little sense if the champion in question tends to be a designated counter pick? Or on the other hand, shouldn't we be far more curious when a safe generalist pick's win rate starts to fluctuate?

Win rates could show how well they do in general in a lane though. Looking at vaynes she has a ~80% pick/ban rate and still has a 54% win rate which is the highest of all adc's in both. So you could argue that she is in fact "op" based on her success because she wins a lot for how much she is played meaning she beats her counter picks.

Usually low pick rate high win rate means either only mains play them or its a counterpick, since usually there are multiple counterpicks to a single problem champ.

On the other hand high pick rate high win rate means that any random person can just start pentakilling with them if they aren't a brainless potato at mechanics.

Yeah, that could effect it too. I always think about the match making system. Players are pushed towards 50% winrate. If someone finds an OP champ and just plays them, they'll likely just get worse teammates to compensate.
