Armor and Magic Resist, Useless?

Over the time I've been playing League, I've found that no matter how much armor or magic resist I build, the damage I take still outweighs the benefit of actually building armor and magic resist, especially late game when no amount of armor or magic resist is going to protect you from their team. It really seems like a useless build path to take. I was curious if there were any plans to take a look at the balance/effectiveness of armor and magic resist to actually make investing in those traits worthwhile.

A late game Sion, Maokai, Malphite, Dr. Mundo or Nautilus can tank the entire enemy team for 7 seconds or so.

It seems low but remember that the base autoattack damage of 5 champs at lvl. 18 is 550 damage or so with 1.0 attack speed. That's the equivalent DPS of a farmed Nasus Q cracking down on your head from base autoattack damage alone.

Its not that bad.

Highest Base AD is 132.6 and that is Skarner.

Sion has 127.7. This is pretty far from a farmed nasus Q(unless you consider 1 caster minion stacked)

The strength of those champions you mentioned is their Kits and that they can get Damage from building defensively.

please read. the base autoattack damage of all 5 champs with base attack speed, assuming an average of 110 or so base AD at level 18, is 550. This is ALL FIVE enemy champions, not one. In case you have difficulty reading, note again: this is ALL FIVE ENEMY CHAMPIONS. 550 autoattack damage at 1.0 attack speed is the DPS equivalent of a very farmed Nasus Q: 1100 damage per 2 seconds.

even though this is a game, it's all about math.

when fighting vs attack damage, armor (lets say 50% physical damage reduction) will in most cases mean you have 50% more HP.

if you are playing a champion that has lifesteal, each point of health regenerated will mean more, as you will lose less hp when you receive damage. thats, (in part) why ADCs buy item 3026 and lifesteal and not item 3083

riot basically took a steaming shit all over resistances and health. yes, youre right. its not actually worth building tanky past a bruiser build (2500 - 3k health and about 150 armor/mr), so you dont get bursted by random aoe.

in case of health its not just a terrible idea to stack too much, but outright suicide. since some genius at riot had the idea to overbuff bork and let the passive apply lifesteal.

this causes a situation, where youre not actually much harder to take down with a high health build due to the %health nature of borks damage. an adc will need maybe 1 or 2 auto attacks more to kill a 5k health target over a 3k health target. but youre actually giving the adc more ammunition against yourself. youre completely forfeiting damage for a build that causes the adc to deal more absolute damage against you and thus have a larger health pool to lifesteal off with a bloodthirster + bork.

so youre actually making things worse by stacking health, for you and your team. the adc regenerates more off you and is simply harder to kill.

its pretty much worthless to invest more than 1 or 2 items worth into resistance. instead of surviving like 1 or 2 autos more, which amounts to like a second against lategame adc, you could rather build damage and have a chance at taking the guy down. instead of being a giant practise dummy for your enemies.
