Since the Champion Grading thing exists, couldn't ranked LP be based on it?
For Solo Queue anyway. Ranked 5s can remain the same since they're a pretty accurate representation of a team's skill if a team wins or loses.
Now for those of you groaning, hear me out for a second.
Someone who completely and totally sucks but is on the winning team will be credited with points towards ranking up. Likewise, someone who can keep their head out of the water or even carry hard while on a losing team will lose points.
Neither situation makes anyone happy. Poor players being way out of their league drag everybody else with them down, and are oftentimes more likely subject to feeding and tilting. Players who might deserve a higher rank for their efforts can end up crushing their ill-equipped competition but still will have to deal with their teammates being major reasons for never climbing or even falling.
If the current grading system we have were to be a lot more strict when applied to Ranked games; being more willing to give out scores of D or D- or even adding the possibility of an F grade (off note, where did E go?), I honestly think it could do a better job at representing a player's skill, and by extension what Rank they are in. We'll have less stories about consistent feeders who probably deserve Bronze or Silver in Gold or Platinum, vice versa as the lower Leagues have games being totally stomped by one person alone, or even the more tragic of stories like when the outcome of a player's life is literally in the control of the 9 other people he plays with.
Wow that got dramatic. Maybe I'm just giving the grading system way too much credit, maybe I'm just tired of knowing when I'm the burden of my teammates or when I get every indication that I played the very best possible out of my team. Let's be honest though, a system that rewards the individual for their individual skills so that that individual would climb probably makes a lot more sense than a system that rewards the individual largely for their entire team's collective skill compared to the enemy's collective skill.
