Did anyone actually play Dominion?

I'm seeing all these save dominion threads and I support Riot's decision to remove the game mode. If anyone's played Dominion in awhile it was usually filled up with bots, games felt unfun and it didn't give the enjoyment of an Aram game. HOWEVER! Riot really needs to put more work into SR and ARAM.

Agreed. Haven't played dominion in years and am not sad to see it go. But I guess we are in the minority and will be downvoted

I played it with friends mainly, about 700+ games between all my accounts, although while it is disappointing to see it go I am not surprised or really upset about it.

I think maybe Riot did learn some things from Dominion and applied them to ARAM, higher base gold, level 3 start, free xp. I wonder why they haven't tried applying that to SR. It would shave at least 7 mins off of games.

Speaking as a long time Dominion player, if Riot made a quick mode queue for Rift with several Dominion mechanics ported over to minimize the lane phase and smooth out snowballing I would be pretty interested.

The thing I dislike most about Rift is that it's two 1v1s and a 2v2 for the first fifteen minutes or so, barring Jungle ganks. I like the fact that Dominion is a team game right from the gate.

I think that's the reason why they are putting so much focus on objectives and making towers weaker, to force more teamfights early so the game gets fun quicker. They kinda broke SR with the death timers, so players have to play safe and aren't confident to fight early since it can set them back too much if they die. Think about homeguards and scuttlecrabs too, they are pretty much shrines from dominion so you can get back into the action quicker. It's kinda sad to think that Dominon is like My Sister's Keeper, it's a baby made for spare parts so they can fix SR.

I've noticed the trend, yeah.

In terms of quick mode (just spit balling ideas here) I would like to see:

  1. Everyone starts at level 3 with 1500 gold.
  2. Homeguards enabled from the gate, death timers reduced. Get right back into the action.
  3. Passive XP and higher gold generation. Minions/monsters grant little to no XP so people aren't tied to lanes.
  4. Minions and towers deal half damage and have half HP. Push fast!
  5. Champion kill gold/XP reduced. Lower snowballing in general.
  6. Faster spawn times on Harold/Dragon/Baron.
  7. Champions and items that stack stack twice as fast compared to normal Rift.

Basically, make the game shorter without truncating late game like Riot has done. That causes balance issues with late vs early game champions.

Bots really are not an issue after you win 20 games or so. Yeah queue times take a little while but your queue time is really no longer than it is with dynamic queue.

More people use to play it I remember getting like 45 second queues tops, but it was completely ignored so problems never got fixed or got fixed really slow. Then bots started filling games and it just made it not worth playing. If SR wasn't changed every season it would get dull, just like dominion did.

I played Dominion, not a whole lot though and I usually just used it to get off tilt along with aram. Looking back on my stats, Dominion was about 5% of my total games. Although, I will agree that it was more enjoyable back in season 4 and even more in season 3, before all of the balance changes and bots happened.

My opinions on playing Dominion, are usually based on the desire for a shorter game, or simply a break from SR. Yet TT and ARAM do compete with that.

One one hand, I like Dominion in the sense that it changes the formula. Destroying the nexus isn't the end gold. (not in the same sense anyway.) Which made it fundamentally unique.

On the other hand, match making simply took too long, because nobody was playing. Almost as if Dominion's popularity had a negative feed back loop. (aside from the one where Riot lacked support for it.) it can't get more players, if it doesn't have any player base to begin with. And part of the reason why ARAM won out for me is simply, because that's what my friends played.

Riot mentioned that unique game modes work best if done in short bursts. So Ideally, we could see Dominions return as a featured game mode. Retooled for the instance of game balance.

I'm not sure how it would work as a featured game mode, they have all the resources for the map and stuff I guess. Really just wish they would have added ranked on there. It could have saved the mode and brought more people to it. I'm worried TT is gonna have the same fate, last time I played TT was Hexakill and it felt weird and was dominated by reset champs.

I wouldn't be so sure that a ranked Q would have saved it. (or be worth the resources to support it.) And kinda shown with the dynamic Q changes, Riot really doesn't like dividing the player base. (Which more ranked Q's would do.) That in mind, Since Dynamic Q seems to be phasing out 5v5s, I feel like they should do the same with the 3v3 Q. If ranked teams arn't supported anymore, the ranked TT Q will plummet.

As for hexakill. I personally find that dominance to be greatly exadurated. (I think riot noted that the pick/ban rate of Reset champs, and their win rate, were a bit disproportionate.) And for me, My tool of Hexakill was Karthus. As having a huge AoE mid liner, does a lot of damage to a lot of champs on a close Quarters map. (especially if those enemies are the squishy reset champions.)

Dominion died for my friends and I when Riot took way too long to add a queue dodge penalty onto the Dominion Draft queue. Seeing those wait times for draft skyrocket from a 1 minute or 2 up to 30 min (after the fix, post fix was queue dodge after queue dodge) and the risk of blind pick (back then, there were some champs that were nightmares to deal with. Now very less so, blind pick isn't that bad) kept us away.

I've decided to play nothing but Dominion (after a few years hiatus it seems), and I'm enjoying myself. I'll keep queueing for it until it's removed.

I've played around 75 games of it and last played a couple months ago. I usually played when I was looking for quick ways to rack up wins on champions I wasn't really comfortable taking onto Summoner's Rift.

I play Dominion more often than ARAM. It's my go-to game mode when I'm burned out from playing Summoner's Rift. It can be chaotic and fun when people just brawl, but it can also be more strategic than even Summoner's Rift (because King of the Hill does that to more experienced players).
