his damage output rivals the adc's in early game. I thought he was utility support ?

Supports, in general, are able to put out a good amount of damage early game either way, not just Thresh.

Thresh actually does more damage since he passively collects Ability Power for some reason and most of his damaging abilities scale off AP.

For some reason Thresh's Flay also allows his auto attacks to do a ton of damage that makes Thresh ADC scary late game.

And then there's his high base damage ultimate.

Thresh's kit is overloaded and even his damage isn't bad by any means and while all Supports can do noticeable damage early game, Thresh is able to do more than any other Supports who aren't designed for poking (who have all slowly died out after frequent nerfs). I think It's pretty stupid that a high utility-ranged-cc-tank is actually able to have any access to damage. But hey, it wouldn't be a CertainlyT champion if it didn't have 3 or more passives.

ADC's are weak-early, strong-late champions. Largely because they're incredibly reliant on itemization to do things. Most are picked with high AA range (or solid ability range) so they can exploit minion aggro/towers, and apply some pressure without taking damage back.

Supports are strong-early, weak-late champions. Largely because they have solid bases but can't buy items. Most are picked with high utility so they can still remain quite relevant in late-game team-fight scenarios.

Support isn't a synonymous term for "useless".

They start off in the same exact spot as marksman, and generally have a ton more power in their skills than most champions with a few level-ups.

Thresh is a fighter/tank support, so it would make sense for him to deal a fair bit of damage. I think the issue with him isn't so much his damage as it is his overall versatility: as an initiator support, Thresh has some of the best hard-engage potential around, but on top of that he has really good poke and top-tier utility/save power. He doesn't really need to have the reach he has now, nor should he be as good at leaving fights as he is at entering them.

no it doesn't make any sense for him to deal that much damage, he's a utility support with a stupidly high amount of utility on top of that, he simply shouldn't have high damage

You don't see Janna nearly 1vs1'ing AD carries early game, can't say the same about Thresh

Utility supports are more like Soraka or, as you mentioned, Janna, and so are more about protecting allies than locking down enemies, which is what Thresh does (though utility supports can pack some damage too). I agree that it doesn't make sense for him to have the damage he has with his utility, but to me that says he needs less utility, not necessarily less damage.

Thresh is an initiating, peeling, disengage, shielding, poke support. Get it right OP.

But seriously though, Thresh's early game damage comes from the passive on Fray, which doubles his next AA with magic damage every few seconds. It is an incredibly powerful steroid; however, if you think about it most supports can 1 v 1 the ADC early. Sona , Taric , Leona ,Alistar , Annie, Janna , Lulu can all hold their own against an ADC early game due to their CCs and high base damages on their abilities.

Thresh also gets passive AP from collecting souls, the impact isn't that great, but it is still there.

none of them get their advantage over the adc as a passive that requiers no mana. thresh also out damages them, at least early game. also, taric's burst has a cost: he loses his armor aura for a few seconds. thresh's damage has no cost.

Almost all of the supports do alot of damage. Thresh does less than the likes of Lulu and Sona

One word. Overloaded.

Not much reason. His damage numbers definitely need dropped.

Because a kill support needs damage to back up their CC, otherwise hooking someone in lane is likely to just get you all inned and killed. Imagine if Blitz had no damage; him and his adc would literally get all inned every time he landed a hook. Thresh is the same.

i wasn't aware he was a "kill support" ? i thought that was champs like Leona, nidalee, pantheon, blitz, brand, etc.

thresh provides peel and free escapes for adc and decent poke. why is he kill support if he can peel and poke and provide safety so well?

supports deal damage early on. That's how supports work.

I mean, he's able to be built as an adc and one shot people, and people are defending that >_>?

TwinkiePro2 votes

He can really only do it to one person, even if its your adc. Combine that with his shorter than average range and he is pretty easy to take down. Think of him as veigar every 10 seconds.

doombotMECHA1 votes

yea some champs can only do it to one person in melee. they're called assassins.

TwinkiePro1 votes

then I guess he is along the lines of vayne, although a sated vayne is such bull. Can 1v1 a Jax so hard.

I assure you, his DPS is far less than that of and ADC with flat AD Runes and a longsword.

Their is a simple nerf for that one:

BONUS MAGIC DAMAGE: Souls + up to 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 / 180% AD

I;ve seen good Lulu support to 1v2 the enemy while the ADC farms...

Thresh isn't OP, as a few people have said already there are plenty of supports that out damage him early on.

Also as other's have stated, A support who relies on getting next to the enemy to maximize their kit needs a bit of damage to counter the all in from the enemy sup and adc.

Plenty of times I'm playing against an enemy Thresh and depending on our team comp bot lane, I tell the adc at the start if he grabs you just all in him immediately as i know we can down him and escape if they decide to fight it out.

I main Thresh and can tell you match-ups against Sona, Leona, Blitz, Lulu, Voli etc...and any adc with high damage can easily down you from your own hook if your not careful.

In terms of just dealing damage to enemy champions, if built with defense items thresh can hold his own at least enough not to die,.. but late game i hardly ever 1v1 a full life champion, and win without them either escaping, my team showing up, or their team showing up first.

The most broken thing about Thresh is his ability to control a larger portion of the area around him while engaging both enemy champions and ally champions through his kit which is without a doubt very very good.. but thats what makes him thresh.. he's a champion with a solid identity in terms of effectiveness and that shouldn't change.
