Champion Grading broken

TL;DR: Playing "unconventional" supports will never give you an S for your score, and you won't get hextech boxes off of your games. Period.

Background on me for this post: Silver 4 Support main Play's "fake" supports unless in groups

I play a lot of champions as support when they aren't meant to be (Ahri Anivia Ashe Brand Cassiopeia Darius DrMundo Ekko Fiddlesticks Fizz Gragas Heimerdinger Illaoi JarvanIV Jax Jayce Jhin Jinx Kalista Karthus Katarina Kennen Leblanc LeeSin Lissandra Lux Malphite Malzahar Maokai MissFortune Mordekaiser Nidalee Nunu Olaf Orianna Pantheon Poppy Rammus RekSai Renekton Rengar Riven Rumble Ryze Sejuani Shaco Shen Shyvana Sion Skarner Talon TeemoTwistedFate Udyr Urgot Velkoz Vi Volibear Warwick MonkeyKing Xerath XinZhao Yasuo Zac Ziggs ).

I know that's... almost every champ, but it's all based on how cocky I'm feeling, or who I'm playing with.

That aside, I played a game with Brand, one of my current favorite champs. I went 7/2/3, had 29 farm, and they FF'd at 20:49 (we were stomping). That's a damn good score IMO. Usually I only see smurfs or mains get those kinds of scores. I'm thinking maybe I get an S- at bare minimum, right? I mean, I'm support, and I took place in 10/18 kills on my team (like 3 of them were solo kills). I warded, and stopped ganks. I even did flashy plays to get them when they were running, and were far under tower. I feel like this was one of the few times support carried really hard. The issue is... Riot gave me an A+. I was rekt by that. It came to mind that this happens often. When I play a support that is usually a solo laner (Brand, Ryze, Anivia, idfk), no matter how good my score is, I can't get any form of S because I'm not taking farm.

Now I know I'm not the only one who is having this issue. I played a game with a friend. They played Kat mid. They went something dumb like 20/3 or something Kat like, and got an A-. I understand it's based on personal skill(me)+general skill(everyone who plays that champ)/blah blah blah math. But for real, if I'm playing support and I do well, I just want my S so I can get my boxes for hextech crafting!

Yes, it works like what you described right now.

The system thinks you are playing a carry role with those "non-support" champions, and if you get a decent score as a support the system thinks you did "bad" as a carry role.

Which leads to decreased grades...

But yes the grading system evaluates you based on champion more than role.

Brand support is a thing, so I wouldn't really use that as evidence regarding 'unconventional' supports having it worse. They arguably have it easier, since if they're unconventional there won't be as many top tier performances on them.

Anyway, your grade depends on how your performance ranked compared to all other performances on that champion in that role. In the support role you're unlikely (and not really supposed) to get much cs, and that's ok, since you're not being compared to the solo lane performances. You're only being compared to all the other brand supports out there, completely separate from mid lane brand and top lane brand and even jg brand.

Brand support is/was actually quite popular, so there's lots of particularly impressive performances out there to compete with, so getting S ranks is prone to be pretty hard. Similar goes for kat mid, theres lots of ridiculously snowbally performances out there that make getting into the top percentages of players rather difficult.

Lots more goes into performance than just kda of course, but the thing to remember is you're really competing with the whole community (notably not just your elo) for S ranks, so you have to perform at a rather high level to get into S rank territory.

I just played a 6-0-8 velkoz with 166 cs relatively fast game. 25 mins or so. Gives me an A+. I agree the champion grading system is broken. Going an entire game without a death on squishy Velkoz is difficult. A+ on that game makes no sense.
