Why am I punished when another player's internet connection fails?
4v5's are a problem. Why are there no alternatives besides toughing it out and trying to overcome the odds?

To answer the title: Because you're equally rewarded when on the other team someone's connection fails.
To answer the above: An alternative would be incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to implement without making it abusable. Bare minimum, players would get even more toxic in losing matches hoping to make a teammate quit.
