was just facing an illaoi and when she ulted the tentaces slapped down 3 times in quicksuccession in a row but how does that happen? I know when her E pops tentacles willslap down and and W procs them but when facing illaoi they slapped down 3times without the spiritthing being destroyed?
When she ults, one tentacle per enemy champion will appear. The Spirit and any clones (Shaco or Wukong or LB or stuff like that for instance) all count as another target. Each tentacle will hit a Spirit once. If there are 3 tentacles, all 3 tentacles will hit the spirit. Any target that Illaoi hits with her W empowered autoattack will also all be hit once by each tentacle. Her W has a 2 second cooldown for the next 8 seconds. All tentacles also swing 50% faster during those 8 seconds.
Basically, if you see her slam down on the ground just run away and re-engage when you're either out of reach of the ult tentacles or when the ult is down completely. She becomes massively more powerful around in her ult area if she hits multiple enemies (aka your allies) so unless you're locked down by hard CC, JUST. RUN. OUT. If she wastes her ult or misses it, don't be afraid to pound her 1v3 but if she ults, she can stomp you 1v3 no sweat but only if you're foolish enough to try to fight her. It's almost never worth straight up fighting her with her ult active. Hope this helps :)
Illaoi's tentacles slam down whenever she uses W, whenever her E spawns a spirit (and whenever that spirit becomes a vessel), and whenever she ults. It sounds likely she used E on you (slammed once), immediately ulted (slammed twice), and then W (slammed thrice).
There's no cd between them, so she can rail those off back to back with no problem. Her W CD is also halved when she ults, so she probably could have Followed with a Q > W to extend the tentaspam had you still been alive.

Her tentacles slap with W. After she uses her ultimate, the W cooldown is hard set to 2 seconds. Also, when she spawns a spirit, the tentacles slap it immediately. So R, W (causes slam), hit someone with E (causes slam), by this point her W is back up (2 second cooldown), W again, slam again.
