Why does the new Pantheon's ult feel so bad to use compared to current ult?

With an ult as impactful as Pantheon's, I want consistency, I want reliability. Current Pantheon ult achieves this. You can see the range of impact your ult will have. You can hold down the R key and aim your ult. You can see the range you have before you use it. So why is PBE Pantheon's ult the exact opposite? Why is it quickcast? I want to hold the R key and see the range of impact WHILE I'M AIMING THE ULT, I don't want to have to hover over R, see the range, then press r and hope I got the range right. The worst part about the new ult is how if you activate your ult outside of the range, it'll automatically fire to the closest possible position. WHY??! I'm trying to fire my ult where I want it, not the closest possible point. If I'm out of range to where I want to ult to, then don't fire the damn ult, it's simple.

They could always hotfix it if it gets enough attention that people are having trouble adapting to it.

Though personally, I've always used my mouse hover over spell to check the range. It's not good, but I've gotten used to it, I suppose.
