Not a fan of the new GP rework, I don't think he'll be any better.

SIayton··8 votes·3,207 views

Honestly for all intents and purposes, his kit is mostly the same. I think a big problem with GP before was his early gameplay pattern and that hasn't really changed. E sounds like a huge gimmick and I really dislike that you have to play a minigame with your opponent to even get the spell effect, its basically less reliable than your old E so he's actually seeing a REDUCTION in overall continuous power in favor of... well... that gimmick. Plus if you want to proc it from range you have to blow your Q, meaning its not even really a trading tool because you're just swapping one button for another.

His passive got better I guess. His ult functionally is still the same, not that his ult was ever bad. I just don't see these changes pushing him in the right direction to really be competitive.

Not to mention aesthetically he lost a lot of his charm in favor of making him look like a dumb brute. He looks like the heavy from TF2 stuffed into a pirate costume. Really not a fan of this rework visually or gameplay wise.

What I would have done with his E is just put it on a timer when he places it and have it so he can speed up the detonation by shooting it or meleeing it with his passive, and not let the enemy interact with it at all. I feel like competitive players aren't going to like him because of opponents having as much control over his E as him, and in competitive play you need reliability and not gimmicks.

Old gangplank was cuter.

New gangplank looks too typical evil pirate dude. item 3070

true but what did you expect here ? the old school pirates dont exsist besides those stereortypes so there is not much of a material to base yourself off here

the biggest step forward is replacing his "yar-har-har" and all that childishness with actual personality of a ruthless man seriously the old gp VO could easily fit into spongebob

Old Gangplank had a really hella amusing design. The few times that I played him, despite doing just meh, I was having giggle fits with my friends because this guy was simply so funny.

Old Gangplank had character. You look at new Gangplank and you think "Damn this guy has practically nothing that makes him stand out from all the other typical huge buff evil looking pirates."

3TWarrior3 votes

actually, I think the old gangplank design actually made him look like a pirate and an original one at that

this gangplank looks like every ghost pirate from every movie and game ever made...wouldn't be surprised if they add a "skeleton gangplank" skin...

I mean, there's already a ghost pirate gangplank skin.... Now we just need the bod-, I mean bones.

I know it will be an unpopular opinion because of the jumping on how awesome reworks are, bandwagon, but I feel this is lackluster compared to

  1. the amount of hype Riot made out of it and
  2. the amount of time it took.
  • They barely changed his passive. It just speeds him instead of slowing the enemy
  • The didn't change his Q
  • They didn't change his W
  • His E is neat, but I actually prefer his old E
  • They didn't touch his ult from what I see so far aside from upgrading it, and the upgrades, I have to be real here, I'm not really seeing the point. They are neat, but I don't see them being game changing in any way.

Sure I may be in the minority, but I was expecting a rework, and it seems like they just added some stuff and changed his visuals and called it a day. Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm not really impressed, nor seeing how this will suddenly make him viable, unless his numbers and scaling are so much better.

3TWarrior1 votes

his W did change. it now heals by how much health you are missing, not a flat amount + AP

it probably has a flat amount, but lower so that people who max W first don't instantly win trades from having free 50% health restored level 9 (it's not 50%, but 400 health instantly can really annoy someone)

he doesn't even resemble his old self...now he looks like a stereotype pirate from every movie/game ever made

his new E can massively increase his burst potential if the setup is accomplished

for instance, 1200 damage on Q = potential 2400-3600 damage in an instant while being out of range if the barrels are hidden in bushes

îÇÝÜ4 votes

cool story. Hes better than before, its a start.

SIayton4 votes

Is he though? Atleast the other GP moved a lot faster in and out of team fights to poke with Q because of his E's movement speed. He lost that now, what did he get to make up for it?

  • a buff to his passive melee attacks. GP doesn't really melee in team fights because he's squishy.
  • a barrel that if you throw into the enemy team they can kill way easier than you can

IMO critplank's playstyle got worse. Maybe a new tankplank using the true damage from his melee is better now? I don't think he has enough reliable CC to really be an effective tank though.

Ser Garland2 votes

Ahem, His Ult now has his E's Old Passive when you upgrade it. He's a lot better.

SIayton1 votes

You mean active? I don't think upgrading his ult gives you passive movement speed all the time, which is why it was good for critplank. The movespeed on his ult is for initiating or saving people out of position across the map I think.

It did improve, but not by much truthfully. His E is worse by a lot. His old E was far more useful and reliable. His passive is barely any different. True damage instead of magic damage, but if it sticks with the same numbers, you might at most squeeze 10 extra damage out of that. Wooooopeeeee!

So yeah, it is..."Better", but it just isn't much of a rework, especially since they hyped it up like it was going to changed the face of Gangplank players everywhere.

In reality, it is pretty lackluster, and half his kit is the exact same, or slight differences in some areas.

SIayton1 votes

Yeah I think GP really needed more to shine competitively. He's not mobile, he doesn't have tons of CC, he's not hyper tanky, he can't dish out ridiculous damage from a mile away, and he's not safe. All of those are basically the attributes that the pros look for in champions. Critplank COULD be good if it were easier to become critplank safely (all they had to do was give him a full mana refund on last hitting with Q on the old build I think).

I just don't see why you would pick him atm. Even if he goes tanky, he doesn't really have CC so you're effectively a less mobile garen with a pistol, and we all know how well Garen does in competitive play. This kit just doesn't have enough to be an effectively peeler or initiator in the tank role I feel like.

He still has no hard CC or movement, which is what most if not all top laners that are competitive have, and need. Same reason and problem of why Morde isn't played competitively, and nothing about this update (I refuse to see it as a rework, because it isn't) helped his actual issues.

Sure he is strong, but he was before if you snowballed.

He has the exact same weaknesses, and the exact same strengths.

What was the point?

How many games have you played with the new GP? Til you have actual experience (at least on the pbe), you should keep your thoughts open.

What is there to see and have thoughts on? It is basically the same kit with some quality of life changes you might see added half way down a patch notes page. It isn't a Sion level rework, it is some additions here and there, mostly to his ult, and the bad change of removing his good E for the bad exploding barrel E.

They are pretty obvious changes. Unless the numbers are wildly different, I don't see a huge change, unless you full on upgrade his ult, and then it is just his ult.

SIayton4 votes

^^^ This.

His kit isn't so different that it needs playtime to get a feel for. Effectively, you move slower but you can drop a barrel now that the enemy can destroy, also your passive does slightly more damage. Gameplay pattern hasn't changed really, unlike Sion rework where his entire kit changed.

Exactly, his gameplay pattern really hasn't changed.

I can honestly see him being played exactly the same way, except with some stupid barrel mechanic I don't get the point of.

3TWarrior1 votes

well, considering it says it applies "all" of the damage done to it in an area

that means you can do up to 1200 damage in an area, 2400 if there are 2, 3600 if there are 3, etc

or early game, static shiv and sheen proc for 180 damage just by their effects

Xonra2 votes

Personally I just don't like the barrel idea, it doesn't really make sense. I really could have gotten behind a bomb type thing. Have it be a projectile that you throw and maybe someone can throw it back. Like you "cook" it, then toss it so it explodes on contact, etc.

Probably a bit harder to do, but it seems more interesting than "put down a barrel that may or may not work at all since the enemy can also destroy it and get gold from doing so". That sounds like 10 ideas and the barrel came from what they had in common the most and they just gave up thinking past that idea.

SIayton1 votes

That's the vibe I got too. Like a bunch of riot guys came into a room to discuss new mechanics and they all compromised on this, and the one anti-fun designer that ruins everything was like "I dunno, a slow detonating easily avoidable barrel sounds too OP, we need to add COUNTERPLAY".

There was probably a really good idea there originally, before someone got scared GP might be viable now lol

3TWarrior1 votes

he's already viable as a second ADC and fighter with a global ult for easy farm

his problem is that he can't crowd control enemies, so area denial comes close

all of the top champs have crowd control and mobility or the ability to harm large groups at once, 2/3 isn't bad

That was basically his old passive anyways, it is just true damage instead of magic damage. It might as well be true damage cause who is going to build mr against his passive?

It might get in, what, 10 extra damage? Maybe 20 at most?

Ultimately, everything comes down to how good the E is, and how noticable his ultimate upgrades are. I've got this mental image of setting up death bushes and detonating them from over a wall (or several walls).

I could be wrong, but it also looked like he ate his Oranges faster to me.

You don't detonate them at all. They blow up IF you destroy them, which you do by attacking them. The opponent can just as easily destroy them. If they do, nothing happens and they get gold.

They seem like one of those "this sounds awesome" in a meeting ideas, but sort of useless outside of 1 in every 30 times you cheese and get lucky. Unless they give vision like a ward or something, I can't see them being useful hardly ever.

You have to place them, then stop to attack them, which takes away from time you are interacting with minions or enemies. That seems sort of meh in my opinion.

Gragas barrels work because you detonate them. GP barrels seem bad because you have to attack them to detonate them.

What is stopping someone from just walking off as you start them attacking? Or they just attack the barrel and kill it before you can, etc.

Seems way too iffy, which is why that is bad. Why remove a sure ability that was good, to add in an ability that might in certain circumstances, maybe end up working.

DrCyanide1 votes

Again, it comes down to how they work. If you can Q them to blow up the chain, then it's going to be a lot better than if you have to walk into melee range to blow up the chain.

My understanding is also that only Gangplank detonates the chain, enemies only destroy that keg. I could be horribly wrong, but it's the only thing that makes sense here.

3TWarrior1 votes

the likely reason they reworked him is because they nerfed sivir for the same ability his E had on a much larger cooldown

also, gangplank had one of the largest gold advantages in the game using support masteries, so now he has a "unique" ability that might give his opponents gold, just like shaco, azir, etc, azir's turrets give opponents 100 gold for getting the killing blow

Meep Man1 votes

I like it since he has more presence in a team fight besides just throwing Qs in and out. He can now get some barrels going. I cant wait to see what you can do with them connecting the way they do.

(On an off note, Riot totally took my idea for a new E from this. Yep, definitely: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/XYjYgfcq-champion-rework-gangplank-the-saltwater-scourge )

I don't know if he'll really have that much more presence in team fights though if the enemy team can just destroy any barrels he tosses into their lines. I guess they're good distractions?

Half of that is right, not really the big boobs party though

Most of the female reworks and new human female champs have had smaller tatas, not bigger ones. MF didn't have hers shrink so to speak, because they didn't redo her splash, therefore they didn't redo the champ design all that much.

When Sona was visually reworked she lost about 2 cup sizes, Jinx sure as hell isn't big chested. Quinn is far from big chested. Cass' chest actually got smaller, it just looks like they are bigger because she is leaning over.

Didn't really expect to have the boob conversation, but to be honest, they are are getting smaller across the board, not bigger. then of course you have females like Rek'Sai...well...she doesn't have any.

The males have been hit or miss as well. Mostly GP with this over buff look. Sion was already over buff so nothing changed. They haven't drastically changed really anyone else to make that claim or comparison, as a lot of the recent champs have been non-human.

Bard isn't buff Tahm is a fat toad/catfish thing Rek'Sai is a monster Kalista is undead and far from Busty Azir isn't all super buff

Out of the last 15 champions, only Braum was big and buff, and zero of the females were chesty, or even close to it.

I don't think GP being buff is the problem, more that he just looks like generic pirate now.

SIayton1 votes

Ok so I just got off PBE, barrels were bugged and don't actually make barrels so I still can't say how they interact but the numbers are interesting:

Barrels explode doing whatever the attack damage that triggered it woulda done + the barrel amount and it ignores 60% of their armor. So they really want you to go crit plank with that. The really interesting part is barrels apply parley for everyone they hit so if you hit a whole minion wave with a crit barrel you get the 8 bonus gold x 6-7 for the minion wave. Also at level 16 the barrels passive start with 1 health so you can barrel > Q immediately.

Barrels don't cost mana and you can store a bunch at a time, we won before end game but I had a 5 stack of barrels I could rapid fire throw out whenever i wanted if they worked. Not sure if they stack but if you 5 barreled a minion wave you'd get a shitload of gold from parley and you might even get the parley bonus for "last hitting" the barrel with your Q.

But TL;DR barrels ignore armor and do Q's damage + barrel damage in an AOE. So basically you can Q crit an entire team with one Q using a barrel.

Oranges restore flat health + 15% missing health so tankplank will get a lot of mileage out of that. Passive damage is better than his poison damage but its got a 14 second cooldown, but triggering barrels resets it.

Ult upgrades cost 500 silver pieces and you generate the same amount of silver that you generate from your parley, I didn't make enough to actually upgrade it but maybe barrels up your silver income by a lot.

So longstory short I think because of gold income mechanics being better, he's probably better than he was before and his AOE crit mechanic is a huge threat in team fights, so I think he will be a lot better. NUMBERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
