  • Basically creating your own customized 7th item for you to use (old runes)

Now it's 4/2 with set stats that are the same for everyone. The variation on "path bonuses" is more or less non-existent. Couldn't you have just made runes free and refunded the brought ones without going overboard, Riot?

Edit: The new Rune system took away a lot of the choices we could make, and made the choices we do make less unique. With the old Runes & Masteries it was almost impossible to have someone else have the exact same things as you, but with Runes Reforged it's much much more likely.

Second Edit:

I agree with this so much, having more trees is good but having less choices and points to spend? Afraid not. And yes, they shouldn't have combined Runes & Masteries into one thing, it makes it way too oversimplified. We basically don't have any variation in our stats given anymore, not to mention no choice in what stats we gain what-so-ever. Before the entirety of stats was left for us to choose via runes, and there were more stats to choose from too. We also had the choice between flat stats and scaling stats. As for masteries part 4/2 is way too dumbed down compared to having 30 points to spend on whatever you want.

I used to have one of those too! Everyone said it wasn't worth buying them but if you got into late game with crit you basically wrecked everything. xD

I miss being able to be unique and have choices.

Man, I even got a Rioter to admit that the crit damage was the best rune to take!

They gave League the whole Destiny 2 treatment with how oversimplified everything's become. I like having the 5 trees, but they never had to combine Runes and Masteries just to achieve it!

Yeah, they should have never put any raw stats in these new "Runes," like Gathering Storm, Eyeball Collection, the Legends, the Hunters, Conditioning, or any of that! They should have given us nothing but the cool passive perks like Triumph, Sudden Impact and Transcendence instead! Gathering Storm could have just been dished out as "x AD per 10 minutes" runes, and let us keep that special customization to ourselves!

They also assumed we were complete sheep when they tuned champs to balance it out. "Oh yes, these tank supports ALWAYS took full armour rune pages, so let's give them more armour!" How'd they know I didn't prefer a full AD rune page when I play Thresh for the sick Flays? Gosh!

I'm with you here 100%

I know Riot doesn't usually revert things unless it's blatantly obvious they messed up, but I hope they can swallow their pride and take second look at this whole thing. Runes and Masteries was one of the core things that made league League, it's unwise to take it away.

Haha ya, but I couldn't include all the possibilities. :P

The possible contaminations of the old Runes and Masteries were endless. xD

I really do miss the old mastery system, and I dont mean those keystone masteries, they can stay on the shelf where they belong.

Edit: Forgot to mention rune system. Miss that shiznit

I agree man, the 9/21/0 etc. era was the best for pre-game stuff.

I miss Blade Weaving & Spell Weaving. It always felt really nice to use those masteries.

But to add to the discussion, Runes Reforged was to help address a problem for all players but, leaning more towards the newer part of the playerbase.

  1. it was to give everyone access to runes so it wasn't a grind to earn masteries to get access to keystones and so more money/BE/IP could be spent on newer champions.

  2. Many builds were considered standard for most champions decided by the community, such as 9x Attack Speed Marks, 9x Armor Seals, 9x MR scaling Glyphs, 3x AD quints (or w/e). That it would be more convenient to just simplify the rune pages into Runes Reforged.

  3. Congregating runes and masteries into the current system, more or less, remedy the class, "Oof mb, wrong runes." and you'd be like 80% fukt, whereas today, you're about 45% fukt for taking the wrong runes. And ultimately avoiding, "Uhh I don't have a rune page set up for this champion because I never play X role."

  4. Addition of keystones and gimmicky runes add a new layer of depth to the gameplay in order to keep the game fresh.

But it did take away the exclusive and earned feeling that came with reaching the "end-game." Being level 30, getting access to ranked (granted that you reach the champions requirement), gaining access to keystones, being able to spread out more points into other much needed stats or to fit your playstyle.

There was also as odd yet wonderful feeling that came with specializing pages and loadouts for the champion you main because it's what defined the player as a master of that champ without the need of an emote or badge. You could spend hours, days, or weeks crafting up niche and experimental builds and that's what made you the master because you knew more of the ins and outs of every stat and what worked, how it worked, and why it worked.

I also miss the 30/0/0 0/30/0 and 0/0/30 and the 9/9/12 12/9/9 and 9/12/9 pages.

We have no real options now.

Just came up with this random idea while reading the post. What if we had runes be specific gameplay changes, while masteries strictly changed champion numbers/stats. For example, all runes that don't have any sort of effect besides "add X AD/AP/MR/Armor/Lifesteal/Crit/AttkSpeed" could be moved into a new mastery system. The other runes that actually affect how someone plays can be left in the new rune system.

Basically, runes are any non strictly stat changes while masteries are strictly stat changes. It will allow some customization in the form of stat changes, while still keeping some of the uniqueness of the new rune system and its effects.

That's what Ok But Sure Why and I were talking about. Though I do believe you have the idea of Runes and Masteries flipped. Runes are the ones that give stats, masteries is everything else.

'Ok But Sure Why' is a summoner. Me and him were talking about this exact subject a few minutes ago. See the first comment on this thread and read the following discussion. It's basically what you said. :P Hope that clears things up!
