Tahm Kench and Sated Devourer, Riot I hope you read this
Riot and fellow league players, I sincerely hope you take the time to read this and give it some thought....
I been playing League since S2, while I never achieved a high ranked status, I can say with confidence that I am a fairly competent player with a good bit of experience (around 1400 normal wins). When Tahm Kench's champion spotlight came out it nabbed my interest. He is a very unique champion with a versatile kit. I also read a bit about the new sated devourer and how it is going to improve the farming jungler's ability to carry and be of use late game. Little did I know that these two seemingly un-related things can come together to portray a problem I find very disturbing about LoL.
After many games of playing Tahm Kench in different roles (top, jungle, support, mid) and watching my teammates and my enemies equipped with Sated Devourers duking out with each other, I realized that League itself is nothing full of contradictions, and a joke of a game. Before you write me off, please hear me out. Before you remove this thread, please read what I have to say next.
Here we have the champion Tahm Kench, with his slew of abilities aimed to protect carries, cc opponents, and be a excellent all around support that could excel in teamfights. Tahm Kench can do all that with little to no effort due to his kit, he is excellent in teamfights, he can peel well and has decent damage. He is what I would call a perfect set-up champion, his goal is to utilize his skills to support your team, to set up kills. Him alone on the other hand, is less than admirable. This of course makes sense because riot has been pushing for more teamwork, more team communication, more objectives, everyone on your team should be happy little campers that will all work together like the f***ing smurfs. On the other hand, they release this new item, Sated Devourer. I do believe that this item is somewhat overpowered, and deserve to be nerfed, but that is no the main issue. The main problem is that now jungler instead of helping out teammates in lane or gank, they simply sit in the jungle and farm until oblivion. I had one game where we had a jungle kayle, and this player didn't bother to gank for anyone until laning phase was over and we had to group. When I asked her why she can't come to help me when I warned her I was about to get tower dove by the enemy at mid tower and she was at raptors, she simply said, it doesn't matter, I will carry later. Sure enough, late game this Kayle was basically 1v3 the enemy team multiple times and killed them all every single time. So why did I even play this game? All she had to do was farm up and she wins, where in the world did I contribute to this win? We did not have one teamfight, the game was chaos, no one warded, everyone got caught all the time. It is like the nightmare that riot employees have about LoL. On one hand, riot release an awesome badass champion that is designed to promote more team-oriented gameplay; on the other hand, they also introduce a new item that that at its core, want players to solo farm and carry by themselves without the need of their teammates. Does anyone else see this contradiction? All day people have been telling me that I am trolling because I picked Tahm top or mid or he sucks as a solo laner, but the problem is not that he sucks, he needs another teammate to really excel at controlling the opponent and defeating them. Well that is kind of hard when your junglers are busy farming up devourer so they can carry later.. That is what I felt when I played as Tahm Kench, or any team oriented champion for that matter.
Riot, just because you force teamwork down people's throat does not mean that they will actually do it. Look at Trick2g, amazing player but does he care at all about any team-oriented themes you guys are offering? Nope, in fact he is diamond 1 while completely ignoring his entire team. Now you introduce another item that rewards players with more selfish behaviour while releasing a champion that is suppose to promote team-synergy. What exactly are you trying to do? Why not just choose one and abandon the other. Soloque is already full of people who thinks that only themselves can carry them, they do not want anything to do with team-work. Why not just shift the game to that aspect? All the experienced players will tell you that if you want to climb out of ELO hell, you must carry yourself, do not rely on your teammates. Wonderful strategy about a game that is based on team play right?? Does no bells ring in your head when you realize that the way gain rank in League is not promoting teamwork, but in fact, do the exact opposite! Of course, people will say but look at the pro players, look at the challenger players, diamond players, they know how to play as a team. Well, how many players are diamond and challenger? How many players are pro? And on the other hand how many players are bronze? silver? gold? what is the point of promoting teamwork when only 10% of your player base (plat-challenger players are roughly 10 percent of the entire player base in S5, according to https://www.lol-smurfs.com/blog/league-of-legends-divisions/) can truly utilize it? Maybe instead of trying to sugar coat this game as one that requires teamwork, promote more selfish behaviors by players, because that seems to be working, and the new sated devourer only add to that argument.
I been playing this game for a long time, and I have seen a lot of changes added to this game. But this problem of dividing teamwork and solo-carry has been there the first time I played this game, I do not think you will ever truly reach a happy medium, but from this new release of Tahm and Sated Devoruer I think you guys had gone further down the drain. I have spent quite a bit of money supporting your skins over the years, but this sadly will be the last purchase I made to support you, the fact that Tahm is a good champion yet still weak due to this Sated Devourer disappointed me more than if Tahm was just a bad champion. I think you guys focus more on superfluous things to generate more revenue than to truly fix problems that have been plaguing players for a long time. At one time I really thought you guys cared about the player base and what players wanted, but now I see that like every other company over time, its about getting more money and less about making a game an enjoyable experience.
