Vi, the Piltover Enforcer [A Rework]

Mãge··15 votes·3,055 views

It’s been a while since Vi was released, and Vi was the go to mobility focused lock-on champion back in the day. She’s hardly deserving of any trophies in that category anymore. This is an update concept for Vi that would greatly improve the feel and function of her gameplay. These changes are meant to solidify Vi’s role as a straight forward champion that can punch the daylights out of her foes without being kited indefinitely in return. Comment, comment, comment and ask questions! Critique is also appreciated in the right doses.

Vi, the Piltover Enforcer

Forward Momentum (Passive): Vi renders all disables ineffective while dashing (when a disable is stopped this way, Vi will be free to move when the dash completes).

Vi's shield passive was exchanged in favor of a timing-sensitive immunity to crowd control effects. To kite Vi, you need to time your abilities properly. The optimal strategy for Vi then of course is to time her abilities properly in return to avoid being knocked away, slowed, or stopped in any way during her relentless pursuit of the bad guys.

Denting Blows (W): No longer grants attack speed. Instead, slows target briefly (like Trundle’s Q) upon third hit and armor reduction effect increases with the ability's level.

Attack speed didn't make too much sense with Vi's kit, given how clunky it made her attacks feel when she went back to her original attack speed. Instead, you'll get a momentary stopping effect similar to Trundle's Q as a small quality of life change to help you catch up to fleeing targets.

Excessive Force (E): Vi dashes a very short distance while punching the air, creating a massive shockwave in a cone. Enemies hit by the shockwave are dealt damage (applies on-hit effects). Deals greater damage if the struck target(s) is within Vi’s melee range. If Vi does not hit at least one target within melee range with this ability, the shockwave damages her for a portion of her current health.

This is the golden change of the new kit. No longer does Vi stack two charges of auto-attack buffs. It's a single-use, fully functioning cone-AoE ability on its own (with a small dash comparable to Tumble built in). The downside to all of this is that if she doesn't hit anything right in front of her (such as when she uses the ability to escape rather than chase), the residual energy will rebound back into her own body, causing damage.

Assault and Battery (R): Vi gains a shield and chases her target down (does not grant disable immunity – this has been shifted to her passive), throws it into the air and then smashes it back into the ground. She continues dashing toward the far side of her target even while tossing it up and smashing it into the ground if her target has relocated itself during the beating.

With Vi's new passive, Assault and Battery should feel like it's effective 100% of the time. This is explicitly stated because it refers to some scenarios in which her current outdated kit fails to close the gap properly onto her target of choice, either because a disable or crowd control effect lasted longer than her ultimate's dash, or because the target managed to get a dash in the moment she reached them (before she pounds their face in). It's a horrible feeling to have wasted a 100+ second cooldown ultimate whose primary function as a failproof gap closer is simply invalidated with any casual hard-cc spell or dash. Her new passive fixes the issue of crowd control effects persisting through her ultimate, while the secondary new effect of Vi updating her location while she beats her target down should pin down the occasional dash maniacs (looking at you Yasuo) even if they happen to dash as she reaches them.

TL;DR

-Vi is an old champion who needs some small changes to bring up her to date as THE lock-down champion of choice. -Passive grants Vi immunity to disables while she dashes. -Q is unchanged. -W gives more armor reduction and very briefly slows instead of granting awkward attack speed. -E is a Vayne Tumble+Cone AoE whose shockwave self-damages Vi if she doesn't hit at least one enemy. -R grants a shield instead of disable immunity, but (because of her new passive) does make her ultimate unstoppable anyway, and no longer fails to close the gap in some infrequent scenarios when the target manages to dash away right before she pounds them.

I would say Vi is not really on the radar in terms of needing any extensive reworks to her kit. Shes always been a very successful champion since release.

Hm, I'm sorry but I have to disagree with the W change. I like the passive/ult changes, but some tuning may be necessary (like a cooldown on her passive?).

It's mostly theme with me here. Like a slow would be nice, I think the AS boost is better out of theme and her jungling clears. The clears are obvious (early game AS = easier farming), but to me it's all about punching more. Vi isn't Jinx, but she certainly gets excited when it comes to punching.

Basically, when I play "big boomy fist lady," I enjoy punching frantically faster once I've shredded the armor of my vulnerable opponent. It has a greater sense of "bloodthirst" that is a part of Vi's character, even as she walks the path of a reformed criminal turned officer. Crippling your opponent to prevent their escape is too... pragmatic, whereas your blood pumping and your fists increasing in speed as your opponents weaken under your denting blows just nails that "blood knight of justice" just right.

But that's my opinion. I used to main VI (and she will always be my go-to jungler) but switched to mainly support.

I enjoy the concept of "punching more" too. I just felt it was rather clunky because she would revert from that punching more mode into a soft, punch every once in a while mode, which felt really bad.

Maybe they should make it a stacking buff on her, as well as a stacking debuff on the enemy? Kind of like how Ekko's (and Jinx, but on a much smaller degree) passive works.

What they could do is ramp up her AS up to three times (the third being live levels), with the tradeoff being she can't shred the enemy's armor multiple times by giving it a cooldown. So she can keep her AS up, but doesn't get constant armor shred either (once is honestly enough). If that makes her too strong of a fighter, nerfing the flat %HP damage (and maybe some of the scaling?) would be fine with me.

Or, to make it simple, make it stack/decay like Jinx's Q up to three times, but just seriously retune the damage and armor shred values so she doesn't become a more mobile Udyr (because, let's face it, VI has been OP in the past and she will always have that potential again). So if she stays in a fight, she gets excited, but she doesn't necessarily have to focus on one target the entire time (because, after all, criminals don't always work alone...).

Her W attack speed is meant to be used mostly on clearing the jungle, with his changes her survavility inside the jungle will suffer greatly pushing her to a lane (since the rework benefits her against champions and not mobs). No shield and no attack speed means longer clears and less HP available after them

Very true. Lane Vi being the norm, with jungle Vi being an option would be a nice change.

that just sucks. If you want a champion with that much mobility just go play riven. The changes will really through her into some nerf fest until she is up for a rework.

My I remind you one of the main reason "Better nerf Irelia" meme exist is because of her passive given her CC reduction, you make vi immune at CC at using her Q, E and R creating a ton of balancing issues. Pushing her into becoming a lane bully with a feast or famine playstyle.

Adriqnohee1 votes

If Irelia's passive was the only thing stopping her from being so strong, it would've been changed a long time ago, what make Irelia so strong is not one skill, is her entire kit in conjunction with Trinity Force, you take a look at her skills by themselves you will notice that they are not even that strong, apart from her E, that skill is just bullshit, her Q is just a dash that can be reset, Khazix Tristana Tryndamere Katarina Kassadin Ezreal Fizz Fiora Leblanc all of those have either a similar skill or even a straight up better version of it on their kits, her W is completely out-scaled by Master Yi's E and her ultimate is glorified sheen activator, her skills alone can barely pass as average, but when you put everything together, she becomes one of the best duelists of the game, her only skill that could do work alone is her E, give it to any champion and that shit still would be op, no one deserves to be punished for trading well, and that's what her E does, but everything else on her kit would be very meh without each other.

IcyPepper1 votes

It wouldn't make much sense, though.

As a police officer, she's got to be on the prowl. Caitlyn is the one who stakes out.

Adriqnohee1 votes

Well she was designed as a top laner, it just so happened that her kit was perfect for a jungler, but those changes would just push her in the direction her creator wanted, so its not too weird, after all Vi is a brawler, she enjoys trading blows with other people, the lane is the most fitting for her personality.

ModWulf Helhammer3 votes

And the point of this is? She's doing perfectly fine right now, maybe moreso then fine

Mãge2 votes

She comes short (pun intended) of the target in some cases, and could use some QoL changes here and there. The change to her passive makes her much more rewarding when played properly.

ModWulf Helhammer1 votes

Except it really doesn't, because it takes out the whole aspect of actually baiting out an enemy's CC, adding a horrible self damaging ability (does any champ have self damaging abilities, besides those that use health resource?), significantly reduces her durability (which means she has to build tanky, which means she doesn't have the damage to do her job), and the loss of AS on W gimps her jungle clear

Affìnity3 votes

I like the idea of trying to bring her up to date with the other champions in meta at the moment. Would be a breath of fresh air to see Vi able to come back into the meta.

ModWulf Helhammer1 votes

She's not in the meta because she's just not popular. She's not underperforming by any means

(Also, she's got a near 11% playrate. 4th highest in her role, 21st in the whole game. I wouldn't call that "unpopular")

IcyPepper2 votes

To be fair, she is the fourth most popular jungler atm. She's not exactly struggling either.

NiceTryVi3 votes

As a Vi one-trick, I think she is in a very good place right now. Those changes would be not only very awkward to implement, but also completely mess up her balance as well.

the most annoying jungler in the game alongside volibear. so much stupid lockdown. and damage while going bruiser. she has high base damage on Q and W for sustained damage

i don't mind. i find her weird in lane. i did it one time in ranked mid lane. won that game and did . not great. but good. real well. got a quadra.

if you get fed go full ap but the best way is trinity force into tank.

Davarril1 votes

She doesn't need a rework, considering she's one of the most balanced champions Riot has ever created.

Keìron1 votes

Dude, vi is the only healty diver in the game, and you want to rework her?

Arakadia1 votes

Her ult feels unhealthy imho, I don't like the fact you cannot stop this targeted CC and dash.

Adriqnohee1 votes

Its already like that, if Vi ults you there is no running.

Arakadia1 votes

I know. And this rework doesn't change that.

Adriqnohee1 votes

While those changes are interesting, Vi is not really in need of heavy changes, I could see them reworking her ultimate so that they can make her kit stronger in other aspects, but other than that, I feel like Vi is really healthy to the game and her kit gives the feeling of her theme very well too.
