Is New Swain Weak?

He's "S Tier" on many lists but I just don't see how.

His whole kit is tied to landing his E which is a very awkward skill shot that can be dodged.

His itemisation is also super awkward (you're supposed to go Zhonyas and ROA early for a supposed "bruiser" effect but I find that even with a fully stacked ROA, many champions (at the same level as you) can still kill you with a single full combo when you're in Ult form. Its like it provides the ILLUSION of tankiness rather than actual tackiness.

At 2-3 items Vladimir and Viktor are MUCH MORE reliable battle mages. Vladimir brings way more burst and DPS (and all of his skills are super easy to land and spam while Swain is tied to his wonky E). Viktor has way more range with his lasers, more AOE zoning, and his Lich Bane Q-AAs chunk.

What does Swain have? You are super short ranged. You have no CC besides your E and your passive and your damage is MEH. Even with a "bruiser" build you can no longer tank anything with your Ult. Also, its near impossible to actually land a Demonflare on an experienced team (the ability is SUPER gated behind so many factors its impossible to really plan for them).

So why is he S tier?

His E is incredibly strong, because it attacks the opponent from behind, something the opponent has no control over and ways to deal with besides manual dodging because they can't hide behind the minion wave's clash zone to deal with it like many other skillshots. A good Swain user who is good with landing E will literally force the opponent to abandon farming altogether because there is literally nothing they can do.

Swain has always built RoA and Zhonya so idk what you're trying to get there. Swain's ulti has been altered down from its previous form because it had 0 counterplay for melee champions (you used to just use it next to a melee champ and type "omae wa mou shindeiru" into /all chat), and because his R draining was so extreme GW barely worked on him, so it got worked into the current iteration where it shifted some of the draining budget into an execution burst. Not to mention, it got various buffs since release too.

Vladimir and Viktor are not much more reliable than Swain, especially not as the game goes on. Swain becomes incredibly powerful as the game goes on, as he just run over everyone with his E and his R.

  • Swain's range is okay, his E has a pretty long range which makes up for his otherwise lack of range.
  • You forgot his W is also a CC and its utility is unparalleled.
  • You can tank. When I played Swain BEFORE he was buffed, I did pretty well with item 3027 item 3157 item 3065 item 3151 item 3116 because it makes him very tanky, that people can't run away from him, and he hurts like a meteor. I used Sorcery+Domination for runes, Domination for secondary because I wanted the cheap Ravenous Hunter.
  • You can land Demonflare if the enemy team can not run away from you and is forced to kill you off, which is how the build above comes in.

He is current S tier because he was overbuffed, I think he's been knocked down recently too so prob not S tier anymore. But he also isn't bad either.

The itemisation is intended so you can't go 100% tank, at least that's what I feel.
