@Meddler: This isn't what I had in mind when I asked if you were going to do something about Maw!

Raxistaicho: Please tell me you guys are doing something to curtail Maw's effectiveness against ap mids. The variety of stats and the shield it gives makes it an absolutely perfect first item rush against mages.

Meddler: We'll be pushing Maw back to being more of a fighter item than an assassin one (almost certainly involves removing the flat armor pen and replacing it with something else amongst other things).

All you did was replace Maw with something even MORE debilitating to mages! Where's the fairness in an assassin getting a 10-second long shield against a mage's first spell when they jump them?

They have to channel it, even if they can move during the channel. That means you can interrupt it.

If they hang back, you can hang back while the shield wears off as well, or even pop it with an AoE, then CC them and go back to neutral positions with the advantage.

Maw was an issue in lane, not in teamfights. This fixes the problem.

You don't even have to pop the shield.

Its not really usable in combat because ANY damage (except from minions I assume), ends the channel without you getting the shield, putting it on the full 30 second cooldown. It seems to be more of a pre-combat thing, to get onto an enemy without being CC'd.

Good example would be VS Xerath, you'd want to use it before you expect to fight him (and hopefully before he sees you) so he can't just drop an E and walk away, if you try and use it while he can see you, and he happens to hit you with anything, you just won't get the shield at all.

I was referring more to an assassin looking to obviously prep to engage, which is the only situation where the new item would be iffy when it comes to laning.

However, with your added information, its even less of an issue than I'm even suggesting. I agree that it won't be an issue.

I smell the return of double spell-shield Nocturne, though.

Nocturne Let the games begin

Funnily enough, I was just discussing that possibility with my friend earlier. Pop Edge of Night before you ult, go in and block one spell, block a second spell with Shroud of Darkness for the empowered attack speed boost and go to town.

Side note: Do we know the new stats on Maw, I haven't seen them yet?

It might end up lower health=more AD like it originally was, with more MR.

With the shield, its likely going to scale on either MR (like currently) or HP.

AD lowered, possibly base AD bonus, and more MR. No more armor pen.

That's if they want it like it was before it was made more damage-oriented

Really can't tell; its not on the PBE yet. Everything is speculation atm.

There's another update tomorrow. Stay tuned.
