Can someone please teach me tips on how to play illaoi?

I really like her kit, tentacles spawning, messing around with tentacles, being able to smash people with tentacles

but i feel like...

she is REALLY easy to just ignore throughout the game. Being a Vessel is now underwhelming because literally the way to counter it is walk in a horizontal line when you see the tentacle hitbox, then hit the tentacles twice.

The only way I see her being useful is her ulti in teamfights (usually requires a flash, and even then, there are SO many champions that can exit the AoE, the only way I seeing it being implemented well is with an amumu ult or some shit like that), and collateral damage from vessel tentacle smashes.

your team still gets a bunch of transferred damage in on the vessel and while it's easy to dodge the tentacles when you know they're coming, actually doing that while team fighting is very distracting so your team should engage while that champ is going to be having issues. You want your team to advance slowly when your tentacle has appeared in a good place for you and you want to ult when the enemy is trying to fight you for an objective so backing out of your ult also means your team gets a tower or a dragon

Hey Squishy, I felt the same way about illaoi on her first release she seemed really fun in the previews but when I took her live I sucked but here are some things that helped improve my gameplay

  1. Match Ups: Depending where your playing her ( I only play her top) You want to choose your start carefully. Ranged= Dorans shield or cloth armor and pots. Melee= Dorans shield or Doran's blade with pots. If your playing versus a ranged champ I like to freeze my lane right in front of my turret so I can free farm without being poked by the enemy. And if they do poke me try to land a Q. A way to land a Q is to wait for when they go to last hit and instead of using it in a straight line I usually go at a angle to make it trickier to dodge. If you have hit at least 4 q's on your enemy by lvl 5 and no one has backed yet you can start looking to finish them. Usaully their guard will be lowered and they will be looking for a gank from your jungler. At this point you can look for a opening between minions, Use your e if they start to run from the vessel you can either attack the vessel or chase them. But only chase if you have the river warded because the jungler could be waiting. But if they run and you know your safe, you can chase and prob kill them since they will get that hefty slow from your e if they run out of the zone. Against a melee you can apply the same strategy. But depending on the skill lvl of the enemy I might just Q them to death.

  2. Tentacle Placement: You cant really control where you tentacles are placed but you can nudge them towards where you want them. If the enenmy knows what they are doing then they will try to kill them whenever they see them. Use this to your advantage, whenever you see them going in to destroy one either Q,W, or E them for some quick damage. Tentacles don't spawn close to each other they usually spawn about 3 Q lengths apart from each other. Also remember you can spawn tentacles on enemy turrets and turret rubble.

  3. Ulting: Here's what I think you wanted most. Whenever you ult as illaoi you want to keep a few things in mind. A: Does the enemy have any hard CC? Many a ult has been interrupted by a lucky taunt or hook B: Whenever your ready to ult you want to do it more towards the middle of the fight. If you do it in the backlines of your team you pretty much just wasted your team. C: Before you ult try to land your E on someone. Make sure you try to get as many people in the range of you idol smash as possible. It has decent range but don't overestimate it. D: Whenever you go in and ult you just cant fade away to the back. You have to be in there smashing Your W key into the flippin keyboard E: If you want to essentially one shot people with that ult as I bet you've seen. The staple part out of any of my illaio builds is the Black cleaveritem 3071 and a spirit visageitem 3065 The black cleaver reduces the armor of people you hit. The spirit visage gives you MR and increased. That stacked on your natural healing is a whole lot of healing in the middle of a team fight.

I hope these tips help you as much as they have*[slayer-pantheon-thumbs]* helped me
