Aren't their uses alot identical? Like I feel as if they take up the same spot except Aftershock is better of squishies.

that might be because gargoyle was over-nerfed cuz of chogath abusing it. if riot undid all the mechanic nerfs to it might go back to being good. if im not mistaken it not working with cinderhulks % health increase also pushed away many tank junglers who might've wished to use it. ( which shaved off a shit ton of potential bonus health ) and i think there were some others nerfs to it. anyways bottom line. just disable gargoyle on chogath. undo all its previous nerfs. item can actually be good and functional.

Gargoyle Stoneplate give bonus armor and MR in relation to the number of enemies there are, with an active that give more bonuses and health. Aftershock is triggered by hitting an enemy champ with CC, with the bonuses there for ensuring the user does not need to worry about being killed before blasting the enemy.

All in all, no, not really; one is a tank item, and one is for CC heavy tanks/bruisers for damage.

I mean the purpose for both are to go in to a large group and gain bonus stats to tank for longer. The damage is pretty negligible from aftershock. Also Bruiser Jarvan loves Gargoyles because after he blows his load he can just use Gargoyles and tank for a lot longer.

One gives AoE damage and makes tanky bruisers tankier, temporarily and is a Rune, so it can be used in early game, too. One is an item primarily built on tanks so they'd be an even fatter body to take down; J4 is probably one situational instance that may not bother with stoneplate under normal circumstances (and yes, I did check; most frequent and high win builds don't show him with stoneplate.) At most, it's only deadman's and spirit visage. At most, the "love" is just a random niche.

It is not common anymore because it has to be balanced around Cho just Stoneplate ulting champions for 100% of their health using true damage. It is not core on anyone because Cho breaks the item.

Unlike Aftershock?

Gargoyle active counters (non max hp) true damage, aftershock doesn't. (although gargoyle`s bonus hp can help you counter max hp true damage with the use of item 3053 and/oritem 3190, max health true damage is very likely to proc steraks when gargoyle is active. )

Gargoyle gives the most mr out of any item in the game as long as you have 3 enemy champions near you while aftershock is a burst of resistances that can be procd only once per group fight unless the group fight was spread out and mostly constant skirmishing and disengaging.
