Now that The hype over new sion is gone...
Can I have my old sion back?
Can I have my old sion back?
Can I have my old sion back?
Indeed . Riot plz .
Soon is too balanced, he telegraphs his attacks like a video game boss, it's near impossible to get hit by him.
Unfortunately, they'll revert him as soon as they revert cass (aka never) because you know, some champs are just inherently better than others due to favoritism, and our champs aren't part of the chosen group.
They aren't going to revert his rework.
They aren't going to revert his rework.
That's the joke
(aka never)
Old sion was one dimensional and he lacked counterplay. I like the new sion a lot, he brings a unique approach for teams. His ult is much like a Sivir ult in that you can force teamfights and catch people out. His passive is a lot like Karthas so he can help out in fights even if he gets blown up during initiation. His kit just... makes sense now. It didn't make sense before.
Sion's counterplay was anything with range.
New Sion is pretty much trash. They should have just made Q a skillshot, changed W to scale with AD, and maybe added in the new minion-punter, but the Ult was sacred. I can not play my main anymore because they took away what made him Sion.
Counterplay was "run and stay away for the 20 seconds my ult is healing my entire team. If you don't... you die." New Sion is: "Run away and stay away for whatever reason... if you don't, you can just melt me down while I do no damage."

"Run away for 20 seconds" isn't counterplay. It's giving up. Towers, baron, inhibitors. There are things you have to defend, you can't just say "Oh Sion popped his ult lets go hug our nexus until it's over"
Sion's new ultimate is a great engage tool and it has counterplay in that you can predict it and spread out, bodyblock it with a tank, dodge it with a mobility spell (which means your mobility spell is gone in the ensuing teamfight).
If you're under a turret, chances are you've run from Sion already. He could never out-lifesteal a turret's damage, and that's a fact.
"Running away" means getting back to a safe distance. Kite the most kite-able champion in the game.
Sion's new ultimate is a trollzerg. Plain and simple, it turns a great warrior champion who thrives on a fight and inspires his team to victory into a dumbass version of Leroy Jenkins who gets melted as soon as he enters a fight, CC-ed post revive, and dies again.
There's just too much damn counterplay in the new kit--nothing you can do isn't explicitly telegraphed to literally everyone around you.
And your "mobility spell" is going to be back up just a few seconds later, so no it isn't "gone in the ensuing teamfight." That damn spell is going to be back a second later so you can run away even if Sion drops an EQW.
Not interacting with the enemy is an extremely unhealthy interaction. You mention AD Sion, but also forgot about AP sion: I Stun you and you die.
His old ult was absurd anyways.
I've written extensive replies on the same subject before.
My plan for Sion's rework would have been extremely simple.
Q becomes skillshot, W changes to AD scaling, they could've done whatever with E, and the Ult made perfect thematic sense. Maybe add a single target leap on initiation.
AP Sion was toxic/cancer. AD Sion was satisfying and genuinely fun to play.
I actually like the new Sion more than the old. Old Sion was either kind of fun to play (building AD) or completely and utterly boring (building AP). New Sion is just really fun to play for me. Sure, his moves are telegraphed and he can be really easy to dodge, but I've never been so satisfied getting a successful gank than ganking with Sion. Especially if you sneak behind their turrets and ult from there. When they hear that ult go off and start running for their turret, I wish I could see those champions' faces when they notice there's a Sion charging at them from where their turret should be.
The new Sion is better designed but also weaker.
As indicated by his now-abysmal pick rate, the vast majority of the players care only about a champion's power level and not about design or even fun.
This should be a lesson for Riot. I believe that players who care about game design are not playing MOBAs, because MOBAs are inherently poorly designed anyway. The point of any MOBA is mainly as a framework to fight other people and hopefully stomp them into the ground and feel awesome. Therefore Riot should prioritise balance over any other design considerations.

I would have to agree with this. A majority of players do only pick for power, not actual design.
