Rammus > Volibear?

I'm surprised Volibear is picked more often and has a higher win rate.

Rammus just seems to do mostly everything Volibear does but better (and more).

Rammus is similarly tanky but WAY MORE mobile. His Q mobility is just insane allowing him to Gank from miles away and allowing him to do BS split push/tactical assassinations/buff steals and then Q the hell out. This is stuff the relatively slow Voli can't get away with.

They have similar levels of peel (Rammus with his taunt and Voli with his Q) but because Rammus is way more mobile, he is much more flexible in how he positions. Also, because Rammus is way more mobile, its far easier to reach the backline or the middle of a fight with him and actually do something (AND be able to get out... kind of like a more advanced version of Garen's Q in/Q out... Rammus' Q is even more insane in mobility).

Voli has a passive that makes him technically tankier but Rammus is still one of the Tankiest characters in the game and his passive and abilities (converting defensive stats into offensive bonuses) encourages it.

You can't even say Volibear is easier to play. Heck Rammus is about as simple mechanically as mechanics get (Q into the battle, press W and E... then Q out... maybe through an Ult or a slow smite somewhere). I'd say Rammus is way easier to play because once you reach a target, you literally just press W and E and without fail most of the time the target will be CCed and do a ton of damage to himself. With Voli, even if you do reach the target they sometimes manage to run away because his CC (E) is far less reliable and his auto-attacks can be more easily kited away from.

So why don't we see more Rammus? Isn't he just better or am I missing something?

Way more mobile (way more flexible in positioning, split pushing, peels, assassinations, zoning etc)... way more reliable CC and peel... and honestly similarly tanky.

The main thing you're overlooking is that both champions belong to a different archetype.

Volibear is a fighter, or tanky DPS. Rammus is a tank, or tanky CC.

Volibear uses tankyness more like assassins, mages, and marksman use mobility and range: to survive long enough to kill things, and Volibear's job is to kill things. Volibear's job isn't to initiate team fights and lock down priority targets, counter-initiate and peel for allies, or perform bullet-sponge duties. That's the job of a tank like Rammus.

Not that Tanks can't kill things or Fighters can't initiate+CC, but both are specialized to a different end.

In regards to that specialization and picking Volibear over of Rammus, a good team comp doesn't always call for a tank. Other champions can cover for the lack of the tank, and not every team comp has to be built around play styles that favor having a tank. Tanks also tend to struggle much more when it comes to lanning and amassing CS than fighters.

Rammus isn't always going to be the best choice compared to Volibear.

voli is better at 1v1ing. but rammus has more potential overall.(taunt OP af) because if either one reaches the enemy ADC, they're probably dead, but rammus just does it a lil bit better.

Voli deletes an adc after 3 auto attacks all by his lonesome.

but voli is more readily kiteable.

rammus can reach and ensure the adc's death more reliably.

voli does deal more damage, but id rather have the rammus.

The problem with rammus mobility is it requires perfect driving conditions. If an enemy minion moves slighty in your way, bam no more roll, if an enemy uses a jump onto you, bam no more roll.

Taunt is awesome but in some of the burstier matchups it just doesn't last long enough to help.

Rammus and voli ults probably do about the same dmg with the added benefit of rammus hitting stealth/towers. Even then voli has his attack speed buff so they probably take towers about the same.

Tbh if rammus was as durable as he used to be, before higher and higher damage output, I would totally agree with you. I played the crap out of rammus way back in the early days of LoL. He used to reliably tank entire teams damage with defense roll, but thats become way harder to do now.

Edit:but if you want to hard counter a high physical damage AA hero rammus is absolutely your Armadillo! He has to be Yi's worst possible matchup.

Rammus does deal less damage than Volibear technically to be fair. Most people like to play champs that they can solo carry on regardless of the situation. Rammus requires follow up in most cases, Volibear does not necessarily require that follow up as he can usually finish his target off himself
