Karthus Rework-o-matic 2000

Why does Karthus need a rework? He is one the oldest champions in the game, and with the focus towards higher mobility he has almost completely disappeared competitively or casually. The only time he seems to get played, is in ARAM and never by choice. His big thing, his ult, has so many counters these days that it might as well not exist.

I'm going to throw around some rough ideas here for a rework for him, nothing here is necessarily cohesive or concrete, but I want to create a collage of sorts describing what Karthus is and what he does.

** Passive Ideas:**

To me hes a Lich, and lich do not really die, do they? they cannot be destroyed by because of something called a Phylactery stores their mortal remains, and with a ritual they can be revived again as a lich. I think it would be cool if his new passive was like a Phylactery effect, where he would have two possible respawn points. An ally would channel the phylactery (like how the Ascension gems work) and after 10 seconds Karthus would be revived at that location and make a global sound effect that enemies could hear.

Another idea, would make him mobile in his "dead" state and have a set area he can travel based on dead targets around him, could be ally or enemy. This would be a interesting effect, maybe he would raise spectral copies of the fallen that attack his enemy as he travels. ** Q Ideas:**

His Q is a big part of his kit but I feel like it's range is too short or it takes too long to be useful. My 1st idea would give his Q a channled AoE blast effect (like Xerath 's Q skill) that would initially do a lot of damage but as you channel it's range would increase but it would lose damage. this would make his less reliant on hitting a single target with his Q but would still retain what this ability does at it's core.

My other idea for his Q would give at charge system of 3 charges and each recharges over 10 seconds. Karthus could quickly cast 3 1 after another (no cooldown) and would simply wait for recharge. This would allow him to do very high short term burst and help better deal with lane pushes or harassment.

W Ideas:

I like his W as is but maybe he and his allies could get a speed boost as well.

Another idea is maybe his wall would do damage when ever enemies "CROSS OVER".

E Ideas:

I like the idea of giving Karthus the ability to jungle as a mage, so maybe passively his E would restore Health on kills with it being amplified for champions and large minions. The mana regen seems out of place since the mage rework so it could go IMO. Making him a viable jungler would also mean having the E active do bonus damage to neutral minions possibly, right?

R Ideas:

His ult is a very iconic ability but these days it feels very weak especially compared to some ults these days.

An idea would give his ult an execution effect which does maybe 8% increased damage based on the target's missing health.

Maybe when Karthus kills a player it spawn a ghost of that champion for a short time that damage enemy players.

Maybe we change his ult entirely to maybe a delay blast effect:

Karthus Channels for 5 seconds dealing 10-50/60/70% of all enemy target's max health as magic damage, based on channel time. For each enemy slain restore 100/150/200 (+30% of AP) health and grant you 10% increased movement speed for 10 seconds.

Seems crazy right? but this would have a clear visual indicator, and with a good team this would be extremely deadly and make for a very high stress period for the enemy :).

His Q is normal for a mage, he's not supposed to be long range in the first place. He's a battle mage. One of the longest range battle mages anyway, take a look at shorter range Vladimir Rumble AurelionSol (Swain?) He deals with harassment very well, do you know how much a single target Q does at early levels? He also has pretty good waveclear through his sustain and Q's.

Giving a DPS champion an AOE reliable damage and cc source isn't really a good idea, it already shreds MR. Now he's going to be bursting people down rather than DPS.

For his E, yea he can jungle, but he's more viable in midlane only ulting for roams/ganks/ally all-in backups.

his ult only has 2 true counters: 1 if you have some sort of invincibility ability, and item 3157 which counters basically everything in the game. I'm Karthus trying to kill this 5% health Ahri. I ult, now look at that Elise with a item 3102 that didn't take any damage, she didn't really counter me. I wasn't after her in the first place. Ok new scenario: I'm Karthus. Ahri built a banshee's. I Q her, E, whatever. Just a bunch of single target DPS. now look, banshee's can't protect her now since I'm not going to be waiting 40 seconds to ult for the passive shield to come back. It's still possible to kill people with your ult like Fizz who has his E. Bait it out, time his cooldowns, kill him. Simple..like other DPS champions Azir AurelionSol Cassiopeia Ryze +most adcs you don't even use your ult 70% of the time to kill people.

Was a phylactery the same thing in Dragon Age Origins at the beginning of the Mage questline? I think in that game it was a vial of blood so they can track rogue Mages. Been forever since I played it but it sounds familiar.

The truth is that Karthus has a higher winrate than most champs - once he gets going he is strong and nearly uncounterable. Killing him is actually a detriment in teamfights, especially if he's OOM. He's not a very 'exciting' champion and doesn't really make a whole lot of plays except for ult sniping until teamfights, but he's still a solid pick, and extremely safe because of his range.

He's objectively very strong, and his ult -should- have a lot of counters because it's a global non-skillshot nuke that hits the entire enemy team. It forces him to pay attention to cooldowns and item actives and use his ult strategically.

A rework is one thing, but simply buffing him because he's not played often is really not the way to go - he flies under the radar now and he's such a frustrating character to play against due to his safety and the fact he punishes you for killing him.
