I think what puzzles me most about the Cinder change is an issue of consistency

Riot made it pretty clear that they want Tank items to be chosen based on the unique aspects they bring to play, not simply which one has the best raw stats.

And then Cinderhulk gets its passive weakened, and given more raw stats to compensate.

Have you guys considered making a new non-smite item with the +25% bonus HP passive and then buffing Cinder's burn aura tremendously to give it that potent early-mid game niche you're interested in?

EDIT: just to make things clear, the %HP passive on said new item would share a named passive with Cinder (or Cinder would just drop that passive in favor of a much better burn aura, I don't know which would work better.)

I mean cinderhulk is still a good item. The nerf wasn't tremendous to the late game. Honestly the buff to the initial buy far outweighs the minor lategame nerf.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's bad.

You're gaining about 85 HP early (due to the passives) and losing a few hundred late game. Whether this shift is truly a nerf or not remains to be seen.

I'm just saying that there are ways to make this item an attractive choice beyond just fiddling with its raw HP gain. Making its burn aura scale with total HP in some capacity would provide a nice magic damage alternative to Titanic Hydra while opening up the %HP passive for an item that isn't locked behind a Smite-wall. There are Tanks who don't jungle, after all.

I gotcha, they would need to make them the same unique passive to avoid wonky itemizations though. I main zac so titanic hydra isn't even on my radar. lol Can we get some ap tank itemization pls rito?

I'm still trying to figure out why Riot doesn't just keep the old Abyssal Scepter in the game and make the new one they're working on build out of Negatron and a Giant's Belt. The two items are focused on totally different target audiences (true tanks vs Mages who want a little extra bulk and better smush-popping).

But I suspect the new item's aura (some amount of magic damage in a pulse around you every two seconds that shreds 5% MR) would be pretty much exactly what you're looking for on ZAC.

Yet another MR shredding item would be broken on Amumu....

Bring it on. :D
