Inspiration Keystone Concept: Visionary

Visionary (Inspiration)

  • Whenever an enemy champion leaves your normal vision, you gain obscured vision of that champion for 2 seconds. (i.e., a red silhouette, similar to an Oracle Lens)
  • Whenever you land a basic attack or ability (excluding damage-over-time) on an enemy champion, reduce your Trinket cooldown by 1 second and increase the duration of any of your active Wards by 1 second EDIT: pause the timer of any of your active Wards or Lenses for 2 seconds.
  • The placement range of your Wards is increased by 20%, ~~and the vision radius of all of your Wards and Lenses is increased by 20% while you are within 1000 units of it. ~~ EDIT: the vision radius of all of your Wards is increased by 50% if you are within 200 units of it.

In response to the many recent vision nerfs, this is a vision-focused keystone that improves your ability to track the movements of your enemies and keep wards up on the map.

Momentary obscured vision allows you to see the location of enemy champions after they leave your sight as well as the direction they are moving, letting you get an rough approximation of where they are headed as well as opening up the potential for landing skillshots on enemies trying to leave or hide in a bush.

This keystone also rewards you for staying in combat with enemy champions, letting you increase the duration of your wards and cut down on their cooldown by trading blows with your enemies. This increases your vision uptime considerably.

Finally, you would be able to place Wards a bit further away than other champions as well as increase their vision radius if you are relatively close to them. An Oracle Lens is always on you, so it would always benefit from the increased range.

This keystone doesn't provide any direct combat benefit, but would give you a lot of additional information if you are smart with your ward placement and keep eyes on your minimap. This is geared primarily towards support champions due to their focus on vision, but would also be useful for ADCs since it lets them place wards at a safer distance and help their support with vision more, and for junglers, as they extra uptime on Oracle Lenses gives them more vision control and opportunities for surprise ganks. Any squishy, immobile mage who needs to have vision control around the river would also get a lot of use out of this rune.

EDIT: I really appreciate all the feedback! I've made a few adjustments to the concept to try to address a few issues people had with it.

First, the trinket CDR was very strong, especially combined with the increased uptime. The additional wards would make it a must-pick in pro-play. I've changed it to instead pause the duration of any active Ward or Lens for 2 seconds. This increases the uptime of the wards you have placed, but doesn't give you the opportunity to move up your vision. This improves the wards you place in the laning phase significantly, since they are relatively static, but doesn't let you place any extra wards over the course of a game.

Next, I've adjusted the vision granted by standing close to your Wards. The old version basically needed you to stand inside the radius, which would give you a rather big area to work with. This updated version makes the vision radius much bigger, but only if you stand in a much smaller area. Basically, the effect is that you stand on top of a ward to add your vision together. The amount of vision in terms of area coverage is roughly the same if you stand on top of a ward, or are standing totally outside of its radius.

Very good concept and would really like this but riot just has a boner for a blind map

This would probably become just about the only picked keystone in pro play, so Riot won't add it.

It would definitely see pro play, but I'm not sure it would be the only one. The extra vision is amazing, but only the user can see the silhouettes and only their wards are enhanced, and they sacrifice a lot of burst damage from keystones like Dark Harvest, Electrocute, or Press The Attack, or trading power from keystones like Undying Grasp, Fleet Footwork, or Summon Aery. Not to mention that going Inspiration primary severely limits your ability to dip into powerful options like Bone Plating, Triumph, or Sudden Impact.

Players with sufficient game sense to track the enemy jungler and manage their wards or skill in lane to afford extra Control Wards would have a fair shot at having similar map knowledge while still having the benefit of more combat-oriented runes.

This. Immensely powerful in pro play, absolute trash tier in every other skill level.

It also isn't a particularly interesting ability to use. Currently inspiration gives you:

  • ANY summoner spell you want.
  • The ability to 'steal' items from enemies.
  • Huge bonus slows and a slow laser.

This just....gives you more stats. It doesn't really change how you play, it doesn't "break the rules" in any cool way either. It just makes wards better and buffs a rather uninteresting part of your skillset.

Hmm, I like it! Though I could see it being used by reksai and warwick to have some crazy detection from the jungle, since they both can 'see' farther than normal vision range regularly. Ashe and ezreal could too but not as significantly.

iiGazeii2 votes

Keystones being particularly powerful on certain champions due to their mechanics is not unheard of (Ezreal and Kleptomancy is a great example), but I don't really see it being a huge issue. You still need actual vision of enemies to get the benefit. It could probably be limited to the vision granted by Wards and your champion's vision range (so that towers and minions wouldn't give you the obscured vision).

You also have to consider that taking an Inspiration keystone limits the damage you get from your runes. The Inspiration tree has zero runes that give you more damage. It's all utility. It needs to be strong enough to consider taking over something like Dark Harvest or Lethal Tempo that give you direct power in trades and fights.

Z3Sleeper2 votes

How so? It wouldn't affect Tremor Sense or Blood Scent at all. Since they aren't actually in vision, they won't show silhouettes.

Daddy Ants2 votes

No more obscured vision mechanics please.

Akali already has it and she's turbo cancer.

iiGazeii3 votes

Obscured vision is the vision granted by Oracle Lenses, the red silhouette that lets you see a champion, but not target them. Every champion has access to it.

I have to say a couple things. I like the idea, but it doesn't offer much in terms of non-pro play.

Increasing the size of the vision isn't a good idea because player's have learned to play around vision range, and it would kind of suck to completely negate the chances of a skilled jungler pathing perfectly around your wards and still getting you despite your vision, i like the idea of it giving a higher placement range, that's pretty cool cause you can ward a bush from a safer distance. But this keystone needs to give you something, or, at the very least, this shouldn't be a keystone at all, it's not powerful enough to be one outside of it's guaranteed pro-play abuse.

Mokuto Bunshi1 votes

I disagree, because of champs like Akali Khazix Shaco Evelynn Twitch Pyke etc and general bush strats. This can be VERY useful.

Zerenza1 votes

It doesnt work on any of them really, you'll still have the same issue with all of those stealth champs where you have to buy a control ward and at the same time also protect it from them and their allies, doesn't help much really. Bush strats would remain the samish, just if champs that don't have enough range are inside the bush, you can ward it from outside their range, sure but in terms of stealth champs you'll have the same problems if i'm being generous maybe it'll make a .5 difference on their winrates in high ELO, otherwise, no change.

Side Note: Shaco, Akali and Kha'zix can't be revealed by control wards, the most you could hope for from them is that you can see them on a ward before they use their stealth ability(akali's is stationary anyway though so literally no change), but eventually Shaco will outplay that by memorizing the range.

I was only talking about the ability to gain obscure vision of their location, not wards.

I meant that: "Whenever an enemy champion leaves your normal vision, you gain obscured vision of that champion for 2 seconds. (i.e., a red silhouette, similar to an Oracle Lens)" Would be useful, that's all.

If I have a skill shot it could allow me a MUCH better prediction of their locations.

This sounds cool as heck. Everything except for

"Whenever you land a basic attack or ability (excluding damage-over-time) on an enemy champion, reduce your Trinket cooldown by 1 second and increase the duration of any of your active Wards by 1 second."

Sounds really good. I think it should be "every basic attack or ability lowers your ward cooldown by .5 percent and thenit caps at 20 percent" because ingenious hunter exists and it already reduces trinket cooldowns (this includes wards and oracles) by 45 percent I think. So combine that with visionary and you'd get a 65 percent cooldown on wards. But if it doesn't cap, and it's unlimited progress, then some people could even achieve a 0 second cooldown on basic ward trinket.

I think you misunderstand how it's supposed to work. The one second cdr doesn't stack and stay for the rest of the game. It's like the reduction on Karma ult, or Master Yi Q.

Hmm maybe have it where the “obscured vision” shows the silhouette of a stealthed/camouflaged champ but only you can see it, or your team can also see it but they can’t right click the silhouette unless the stealthed/camouflaged is revealed (which usually means that your team has vision of that champ).

I was about to comment that this should be a Keystone and not a regular rune with how much power it brings to the game. But to counter this Riot much need to do a compensation buff to control wards or the duskblade passive.

If this was a regular rune I would say break up the keystone idea to either; each of the three effects as their own runes or have the obscure vision one as one rune and both of the ward effects as another. I think that the buffed ward effects from a rune like that would have good synergy with Klepto (maybe it would also increase the chance of a ward dropping when you have the klepto keystone)

iiGazeii1 votes

"Obscured vision" does not allow you to target the silhouette. You can't autoattack it or use a targeted ability, only (potentially) hit them with skillshots.

This is intended as a Keystone, not as a regular rune, with the intention that people would need to give up the damage/sustain of other keystone for the huge amount of utility that extra vision provides. As normal runes, they would be the default choice for Inspiration secondary, similar to Celerity or Bone Plating. I would rather have a powerful keystone version for vision in the game.

Doge20201 votes

True I can see that reasoning.

But I do think that extra vision time or on hit CD of wards would be an interesting thing to see as a rune, one of those runes (maybe the on hit ward CD version) could have a special interaction with Klepto that increases the chance of wards dropping from a klepto proc, increased chance to get a control ward helps the champ because now they have a net safety from invisible/camouflaged champs that they are currently fighting.

AS Janna support! Awesome keystone, I think the obscured vision could be removed (seems too powerful imo) while still keeping it as an amazing choice.

In response to the many recent vision nerfs

I mean, just saying, that if they've been nerfing Vision, I don't think they're going to add in something like this.

J-J-J-J-JUNGLE INDIRECT TWEAK? It honestly seems weak to me, but I can see why you'd err on the side of pathetic considering how bad most of the other Inspiration keystones are.

I love the idea.

YES PLEASE! Simple, effective, unique! I Love it!

Then add a lower-tier rune that increases your wards’ HP by 1 .

With some numbers tweaked.. I really like this idea.

Good job, upvoted.

Cool Pajamas1 votes

I like the idea, just some tweaking and experimenting on it. By what I'm reading now, my concern in it is that the keystone would be a requirement for almost every support. Which will affect the supports we pick. Meaning supports that would be reliant on another keystone to maximize their potential would fall out of focus due to the heavy reliance on this keystone and the vision utility it would provide for your team.

The overall concept is good, however tweaking it, maybe grabbing one thing out of it or two and making it a minor rune may be a better go (Not certain on that part, so don't take it for face value).

iiGazeii1 votes

I can agree with that. The goal isn't to have a "must-pick" rune, but to have a vision-focused keystone as an option. For a support, it would need to have at least some competition with the shields/poke of Summon Aery or the added protection from Guardian. I think the extra vision range and Trinket CDR could be removed and this would still be a solid keystone choice.

This keystone is absolutely intended for supports. They're the ones who handle vision and place the most wards. It should be good on supports.
