Top lane/champions in a difficult spot right now.

First of all, I play mainly supp and as such am no expert on anything that has to do with top lane. However, I think a discussion can be initiated by anyone and I hope people more familiar with the lane/champions will chip in. I'd also like you to keep in mind that this post might be based on feelings rather than facts, so feel free to correct me where needed.

Now to the main issue I would like to discuss: in my experience top lane has more and more faded into the background. As a supp, I always liked the fantasy of that champion up there, farming himself/herself into an absolute monster and after while, grouping up with the rest and raining down his/her built up power on unsuspecting foes. It was then my job as supp to play around this new shift in power.

However, I feel like this fantasy is gone. Top champs either are outclassed/unable to do their job (often they don't even get outplayed, just denied to do much due to various factors which are already summed up across the boards) or top lane can't build up their power anymore due to games being shorter, towers, overall dmg increase, etc.

Additionally, the laning phase top must be a tedious experience. With increased snowballing, top champs often being melee and the general lack of attention for the lane, being slightly behind often means that there is no coming back (more so than in other lanes)

I am not saying top doesn't function anymore, it just feels like it's becoming increasingly harder for a already difficult lane. (Actually, to my shame I must admit that my motivation to play classic supps suffers from this as well)

To end on a positive note: I wish you all many wins today and I look forward to supporting all you hard working juggernauts, tanks, and so on up there in isolation lane.

TL,DR: Discuss top lanes current position in the game.

Toplaners as a whole have kind of a weak influence. Mechanics of exp catching on kill, and general super high gold flow benefits immensely botlane and makes top lane carries way less intimidating midgame. In general, you'd be better off playing a tank/juggernaught just to support your team because your carries are simply more important than you. I don't actually know if, excepting the outliers like broken overpowered Ornn who bullies and outscales you both in teamfights and duels, toplane isn't actually balanced, and the problem doesn't simply come from gold repartition/flow, mobility/CC creep and fast tower taking. That said; tanks having % health damage starts to feel problematic, because though Riot doesn't want wet noodle fights, it makes tanks immensely better at fighting people they shouldn't be able to fight (bruisers/juggernaughts). Or at least not scale to fight. They should get outscaled largely in damage and compensate with crowd control/ utility and survive laning, even sometimes bully just with flat base damage earlygame, not disgusting scaling %health crap. But again, our precious adc's would feel overwhelmed by flat damage, which is not biased to not damage them too much.

Admittedly, since there is so much damage, CC tanks might feel not broken, but when there is so much damage, it is also straight up trolling to not pick someone to protect your carries and automatically win the game. Sustained dps mixed with tanking but without CC is borderline a joke rn. Either CC opponents/ protect damage dealers or do damage, since everyone dies anyway. Fights are too short for ramping up champions to feel relevant.

And then there's assassins. This is the time where you wonder whether they're healthy or not for game balanced. They are the incarnation of snowball shitfests and feast or famine, but at the same time, if they manage to oneshoot the ranged carries, they make the game healthier. Fight cancer fire with fire? I don't know. It feels like too much changes are oriented towards fast-paced, teamfight or hard snowball that all strategy has gone away from league.

Damage, crowd control, mobility are too powerful. Tanks having %health damage is not fine or healthy in any way. (let's ignore Fiora or Vayne right now because hilariously enough, when everyone dies so fast, what's the point of %health true damage). Masteries are stupidly biased towards offensive options. There's like only resolve tree secondary or nullifying orb for somewhat having tankiness.

But I'm starting to wonder if that isnt actually what Riot wants.

My prediction is that they'll nerf bursting again cause "it's unhealthy" and we're gonna see season 7 all over again.

the xp was changed... thats why they're more assassins atm. Top lane carry are less intimidating cause :

  • u need to CRUSH ur opponent to be a threat
  • bot laners never just lose their tower, they feed the sht of other carry... and then swap, and u'll get fcked (my last game was like dat, and most of my games a botlane is overfed)
  • the whole game is decided before the end of top laning phase and on the other part of the map

I don't actually know if, excepting the outliers like broken overpowered Ornn who bullies and outscales you both in teamfights and duels, toplane isn't actually balanced, and the problem doesn't simply come from gold repartition/flow, mobility/CC creep and fast tower taking.

can't know before Riot adress bot lane (crit and all keystone).

Admittedly, since there is so much damage, CC tanks might feel not broken,

they're same as ever IMO, deal stupid shit on damage and building straight tanks, having a decent push and splittpush (hi demolish).

And then there's assassins. This is the time where you wonder whether they're healthy or not for game balanced

Riot should already nerf Electrocute (and press the attack ).

Masteries are stupidly biased towards offensive options. There's like only resolve tree secondary or nullifying orb for somewhat having tankiness.

Grasp & aftershock are strong as hell too. And iron skin (a middle finger to Wukong ) & Mirror shell are decent option against x damages.

Yeaaa... About that. That is a problem. Snowballing is too offensive, but that has several implications : since it's too easy to get kills/roflstomp your opponents :

  1. gold income : Not only is the gold generation in general (gold/sec., gold/minion, gold/towers !!) too good, easy snowball even accentuates the problem. ADC's are a known class for being able to synergize so well with gold income and not bother that much about levels. This is so ridiculously good for them. Towers are paper so they snowball even more on gold, and let's not talk about the stupid amount of gold received for first blood tower..
  2. exp per kill : killing people way more easily grants the snowballing botlane additional source of experience and I found it not rare to have adc's midgame catch up and have the same level as midlaners/toplaners while they're duolaners. They shouldn't ! It's ridiculous, as a duolaner they have to share resources and in no way should they be equal to sololaners except lategame when everyone is max level. Makes me wonder if shared exp shouldn't actually be nerfed. And maybe targons grant experience bonus instead/on top of gold** for melees only** to see more diversity botlane. Eh...
Sun Wu Ryuumoku3 votes

I think, in first place, they should adress :

  • Crit : damages, cost (late game build... but cheaper than all, really riot)...
  • Damages keystones (press the attack a keystone providing a burst at third attack and buffing following damage)

Makes me wonder if shared exp shouldn't actually be nerfed. And maybe targons grant experience bonus instead/on top of gold for melees only to see more diversity botlane. Eh...

Why not, diversity is a huge issue on botlane since age.. unlike top lane

Really feels like if you want to be impactful as a top laner you either have to be an unkillable, teamfight-impacting tank Ornn Chogath or this global threat Shen or a hardcore splitpusher.

Or Gnar. Gnar never goes out of style.

The only problem with toplane is how much agency junglers have over it. If enemy jungler gets ahead you can't press your advatange at all, no matter how much ahead you got. Wheter you want to splitpush or group, not being able to traverse the map because your team gave 2 kills to Le Song denies you that.

It used to be better because vision was more accesible and harder to deny. But for a solo champion in a long lane, a trinket often isn't enough to deal with Oracles and Duskblade - compare it to bot, who will have two trinkets and a sightstone in identical lane.

75 gold and pressuring the middle portion of the lane worked for me when I was playing top like 6 months ago. As long you didn't push to hard and killed the other guy if tried destroying your ward. I haven't topped since the new system but Renekton was beast for that, high damage and an escape if you messed up. Most tops though don't have luxury so I get it.

Zero Skill Tank2 votes

Sure, using red wards is better than not using them, but again - the toplaner who's jungler is ahead, benefits from them much more.

Jungler's agency makes it harder to keep your red wards up, it makes harder for you to contest theirs, and since they deny vision they serve to make junglers job easier in the first place. Old pink wards helped toplaners much more, because they weren't visible.

AirKingNeo3 votes

"Doesn't matter how good you are as long as you have the jungler."

"Top lane is a 2v2 lane. If your jungler doesn't show up, it's like support not coming bot with the ADC."

And then your jungler ganks botlane constantly ( which according to these boards is the only lane that matters) , so you insta-win? ;)

All of my top lanes are bad because they instapick vayne into anything. That's what I've had most of the time since the update.

Bruiser class as a whole could use an update. Why play a bruiser when you could just play high base damage tanks like Ornn? Keystone options for bruisers suck. Offensive options for bruisers suck, and are too expensive. Melee champions who can't take advantage / abuse assasin items, feel worthless in general. The most viable bruisers in this point and time are probably Gnar and Urgot, gues what ? They are ranged.

While people hate and shit talk on Yasuo players, I understand why he was and still is so popular in the top lane. He is one of the few fighters that can still hard carry, since he can dish out adc levels of damage.

Riot need to nerf electrocute, press the attack, draktharr & adress the FµCKING CRIT THING (cost, damages...).

There's no reason at all to nerf Press the Attack.

Even Darshan agrees.

Sun Wu Ryuumoku2 votes

The burst is too strong during early... its close of Electrocute, but its not only burst, it also buff the following dps.

Just need to try last hitting one cs on the first wave and Yasuo, Teemo, Jayce, Vayne... any sh*t range can force u to back insta.

Electrocute provide 50 at first lv, Press 30 as base damage... its too much.

I'd have to agree that none of the keystones feel viable at all besides Press the Attack, which isn't even that strong

I don't agree with him... Yeah its not so strong for bruiser, but bruisers aren't the only one to use this keystone.... even at the top.

Btw i looked at hashinshins video (thanks to ur post), and i agree with him range need to be adressed.

The worst part is the loss of AD really. Not only are you losing out on attack damage from runes, but also from fervour(the usually picked up mastery on most bruisers)

Since the best option for a keystone(which isn't all that great on bruisers) happens to be in the precision tree, or the resolve tree/inspiration tree for more specific bruisers/builds gives 18% attack speed and no AD, bruisers sorta lost out on a lot of AD scaling damage(the case is made even worse if the bruiser happens to scale primarily with bonus AD) in the early game, and whilst yes, in the early game auto attacks are pretty nifty they're often to risky.

Although some remain pretty decent like Jax because the attack speed benefits him, on top of the fact that the precision choices are great on him

AirKingNeo2 votes

BRUISER UPDATE? FUCK BRUISER! WE NEED TO REVAMP RUNES AND BREAK THE GAME INSTEAD AND UPDATE TANKS!

Meanwhile, bruisers also get no new items either.

GayFluffyUnicorn2 votes

You got steraks, stfu already okay. Also camille gets half a second shield and riven gets 5 base damage on Q bruisers are fixed now. Press the attack gets nerfed btw. Now shut up and enjoy your bruisers.

AirKingNeo2 votes

How is buffing camille and riven fixing bruisers problems of having little items? Maw is shit and can't be stacked with Sterak's for no reason anymore. Rageblade is a dead item. BoRK is shit. Titanic costs too much and bruiser builds are expensive in general.

Press the Attack getting nerfed is fucking over bruisers. Press the Attack doesn't even need nerfs. Stats show it would need buffs/its competitor needs nerfs (Grasp).

The Resolve runes aren't that good, and a lot of top laner lost raw stats.

I play mostly Nasus, Maokai , and Yorick top. Nasus is in a bad spot now because you can't get as much armor starting out as you use too, not as much starting CDR. Nasus does not benefit from Resolve other than Second Wind. The best Keystone for him currently is Phase Rush.

Maokai is pretty strong currently, and so is Yorick though.

However when that rogue Vayne starts top lane it's hard to deal with them unless youre a ranged char too because we lost so much stats.

In the old systen if I had to go against Vayne top I would run 9 armor reds, 9 scaling hp yellows, 9 armor blues and armor quints.

The Resolve tree need work. Not enough can benefit from Aftershock which gives you a nice armor buff for 2 seconds as well as a good hp % aoe. Grasp is good but not good enough. If you can't make trades early you're only losing out to its full potential.

Go inspiration / resolve as Nasus into ranged matchups. Biscuits, 45% cdr, even more HP than usual resolve, you can grab second wind if you really want to survive harder, but taking summoner specialist, the 25% reduced CD of TP, the fact you can take flash early to be safer and swap to ghost later, the 20% enhanced potions while having biscuits helps Nasus so much in the early game. Grab armor 4 pots against AD matchup and you're basically on a potion for the entire earlygame, with biscuits coming up later

I actually thought about trying Inspiration / Resolve but I'm not a huge fan of those keystones. The increased potion duration doea benefit Nasus a lot, but worst case scenario for me I'll take Sorcery/Resolve or Sorcery/Inspiration. Taking Mana Band plus cloth armor 4 pots and your busicuts keeps you lane for a long time.

I really hate to swap out Phase Rush because it allows to to escape situations or keep people from kiting me which is Nasus biggest weakness.

I want to use the Resolve tree primary as Nasus but those keystone aren't good for him.

Yeaaah well as long as Phase Rush is in sorcery where every mastery is garbage on Nasus, you gotta settle for weaker keystones. And here we go : (ON NASUS) Press the attack : garbage tier Lethal tempo : troll tier Fleet footwork : bad/garbage tier (no AD/AP buys on Nasus) Electrocute : bad tier Predator : ok tier, but tree sucks Dark harvest : meh tier Summon aery : meh tier for max E Nasus, garbage for the rest Arcane comet : same, maybe slightly better than summon aery (slow, then E and he cant dodge the comet by walking) Phase rush : good/godlike tier, yet trash tree Grasp : meh/ok tier (but useless against ranged champs) Aftershock : troll tier (impossible to proc) Guardian : garbage tier (useless in laning) Glacial augment : meh/garbage tier (your W is enough tbh, glacial augment doesnt change anything) Kleptomancy : garbage tier but ok tier for max E poke Nasus? Summoner specialist : decent tier actually

That's why I go inspiration tbh. It's the only keystone that's somewhat good apart from phase rush, and grasp (which is still eh, even in melee matchups). I go resolve first as well a bunch of times , with grasp. But then you gotta choose : you can go for the SUPERTENACITY Nasus with unflinching + legend tenacity + merctreads which is kinda fun, maybe bloodline for dumb lifesteal but mostly mid/lategame where lifesteal doesnt matter as well as tankiness, or just inspiration biscuits + 45% cdr for a better laning and scaling.

I disagree.

The sorcery is the best for Nasus right now. Manaflow Band allows you to stay in lane longer and helps you fuel your Es incase you have to zone the enemy often and farm with it. With the new runes and how the game is played right now, I find myself putting 3 points into Spirit Fire before I max out my Q.

Transcendence is a must take because Nasus needs CDR, and any left over CDR is converted into adaptive damage. Which is something Nasus doesn't necessary need but depending on the game you may exceed the CDR cap so that extra CDR is at least giving you additional stats. I've been in games where I have to build Spirit Visage and Adaptive Helm -- which after I have TF or IBG I have exceeded the cap at that point.

Ultimate Hat is also another viable choice. I tested it out with 45% CDR with max stacks it knocks an additional 10 seconds or so off Ultimate. But for the most part I prefer Manaflow Band.

In every tier Nasus has a rune that benefits him, it's just in the final Sorcery tier you don't have many options. Scorch is OK if you find yourself in a hard laning opponent lets say like Vayne. You will be putting 3 points into E first to farm, zone, and try and shove her out of lane as quickly as possible. The burn helps with that. Waterwalking is useless for Nasus, because lets be honest. Nasus ain't walking much we will just TP. Finally Gathering Storm is probably the "safest" and of the two other choices the most useful -- it scales your AD up. Not something Nasus necessarily needs, but the longer the game goes on the harder his Q starts to hit.

But in any case I'll try some ranked games with Inspiration/Resolve and see what happens.

Top lane seems almost relegated to being a tank lane now too. Now that Tanks are stronger than ever with the new runes, people like Ornn, Cho Gath and Shen are looking virtually unkillable and very lane dominant.

As someone who mains Juggernauts this saddens me (especially with how potentially strong splitpush Yorick can be now). But until ADCs get nerfed I'm fine with this being meta so top lane actually has a chance to affect the game.

SSShutTheDuckUp3 votes

Yorick is probably one of the very few toplaners that feel like they can properly influence the game. TBH if you win your lane you can even bring your feeding botlane back to the game. Just get Herald, ping OMW botlane, ping your R and herald and ask your team to group bot. If all of you collapse there it might be even inhibitor and we are talking something like 14-15 minutes into the game. That's the influence I feel most of toplaners should have around this time, because that's what botlane can do - simply collapse on the top, even if he is not behind, kill him and take out 2-3 turrets

Z3Sleeper1 votes

Higher elo's don't leave herald unprotected sadly. Yorick main here, but probably not this season if things don't change.

Ah well I'm used to finding a new top main for each season anyway.

You're right, she most likely didn't have any armor, because she has no real options to build armor.

And yet it's hard to say if that's even the most bullshit thing around. A lot of tanks can even do the same thing, and so can the ADCs themselves.

That was not 1 second, it was 3. The only time Jax isnt hitting was during the jump animation which was only like 0.25-0.5 seconds. Rest of the gif was damage.

God forbid that something does as much damage as an ADC. At least Jax actually had to get into melee range in order to deal that damage. A 6 item ADC would do that in the same amount of time but from 600 units away.

A melee carry gets into range of a squishy adc. What exactly is wrong in that? That's how its supposed to be. Just imagine a lulu there and jax was full health. He gets chain cced and die. God beware adcs are actually killable 1v1 with perfect AA reset and animation cancel play.

Ah ,finally a post that's getting some attention. I'm a diamond top lane main and I can relate to your post.

In specific to top lane, I mainly play bruiser type champions. Bruisers were always at a disadvantage against both tanks and ranged champions but now it's a complete one-sided lane. You either get 1 shot before you can do anything or you slowly kill yourself.

Your job in season 7 was to survive your harsh lane to hopefully make it to mid game where you can farm other lanes and team fight to potentially get yourself back into the game but now by the time laning phase is over, the game is already decided. Before there was Fervor of Battle and Battering Blows to help against tanks and Ar/MR runes to help against ranged champions. Now i know, there's the resolve tree and such but you lose out on so much damage and by the time you build your damage up.. the game is either over or you are completely useless which brings us back to the same issue with people saying games are ending too early.

I know people are saying that Press the Attack is the new Fervor.. not even close. PTA is just a new keystone for ADCs and other champions that can proc it like Renekton or Jax and still have abilities left to use. The precision tree itself is so lacking in damage. All in all, I hope Riot comes out with a solution soon.

Poke is just totally busted atm too.

Honestly toplaners still have their ability to gain awesome power and spread it it's just really hard when your lane opponent is three times tankier than you at the start of the lane, and can spam a low CD ability like Maokai knockback and deal more damage than you thanks to runes.

Actually my opinion is that ATM toplane is the most definite lane. Tanks in League of Legends are still broken, the difference is that they cannot be play in the jungle so often due to the runes/masteries change. Now they have no way to get bonus attack speed, which is crucial for them to clear camps. However, the change hasnt affected toplane so much, since attack speed is not such significant statistic there. Keystones are broken in the Resolve path, grasp of the undying makes your laning much easier plus now it improves your lategame by increasing your maximum health, aftershock is literally unbalanced when the game lasts at least 20 minutes, tanks are so hard to kill when they use it. The only thing you need to do is decide which of them you'll need more in game.

There is also a different way to play the toplane, you may take a champion that will actually dominate the lane and you have end the game as soon as possible. ATM the best choice for that is Jayce. When you use this tactic, you will need a tank on other lane, i suggest you Alistar who is basically the best tank supp.
