Skillset or OP Champs?

I like to play weird champions. Urgot and Yorick are my main tops and Cass is basically the only mid I'm any good at. My main champ is Shaco (11-2 with him this season), but my friends in higher ELOs keep telling me that I won't be able to sustain a decent MMR until I pick up more champs that are in the meta. Are they right, or can I continue to see success playing less popular champions if I continue to practice and get better with them?

Listen, someone got to plat last season playing exclusively DFG-rush Garen. If that can work, almost anything can.

There were diamond 1 poppy, urgot, shaco, and sion mains last season. You'll do fine as long as you know the champion really well. If you know them well you can teke yourself to diamond or higher with them, ofc if you don't know them very well and their matchups then it will be a lot harder. Also, SHACO OP. He's my main jg

It depends.

Give the FoTMs a go, if you find yourself comfortable with them, go for it. But if you find yourself faring much better with your favourite picks, I'd recommend going with those, especially if you've got a better feel for mechanics with them.

You can be successful with any champ, until about Plat-Diamond(I believe). This is just because those champs only work well when the enemy is an idiot/your champ might actually counter them.
