@Riot Honestly, I don't even think Cinderhulk is the problem

Hello again friends! HateDaddy here, posting on my absolute favorite smurf The Son of ChoGath aka ChoGathsSon (until Cinco De Mayo).

But let's get started...

Lets not hide from the fact: tanks are freakin awesome right now. In fact, I'd go as far as saying they're probably still a bit over the top. In reality, I don't think a bunch needs to be done, this is the most balanced and various in picks/comps this game has been in a very long time. But the fact still remains, tanks are easily the top class currently.

The biggest thing that brought us into the era of our based tank gods is riot buffing the shit out of jungle tank itemization. Prior to that, believe it or not, lane tanks were actually pretty darn decent. Maokai, Mundo, Sion and Gnar (he's a fight/tank hybrid) were the kings of top lane with the occasional AP tops like Lissandra and Rumble (well he's more than occasional). And Irelia, who is a bruiser tanky dps assassin mage wave clearing drain tanking support fighter. So she's kinda tanky too. So make no mistake about it, tanks were already pretty damn good - just not in the jungle.

See, in the jungle, you had Free Win, VIrginia and someone else. Who cares? Free Win is fucking dead, praise thy lord. That was about as far as the 5 AD diversity went in the jungle. Support/Tank junglers had no place. Their early games were strong in ganking but weak in clearing and prone to counterjungling. Their jungle item, the juggernaut enchantment, was also the weakest upgrade for a mid game spike compared to Warrior and Warwickvourer. What does Riot do? They buff the dog shit out of tank itemization for the jungle and kill JuggerNOT because it was not good.

So here we are now, tanks dominating, ravaging our villages and stealing our women. Is cinderhulk the problem? Kinda, just like RG getting mega buffed compounded this. But I truly believe Cinderhulk Hogan might just be okay, brothers. Whatchu gonna do when the Cinderhulk runs wild on you?? Anyway, back on topic, I think the real issue here is Skirmishing Sabre. I mean, look at this fucking thing: it's so broken, people are taking smite in top lane just to get this because it's a huge tank and damage item in one. The challenging smite gives you increased damage as well as reducing the damage the smited foe does to you by 20%. Holy shit. HOLY FUCK. It's a fucking exhaust, Irelia W and ChoGath feast package in one. I have to believe this is moreso a violater of balance than just Cinderhulk Hogan at this point. I think on its own, Cinderhulk is probably fine.

And consider this friends, Riot just buffed the shit out of Botrk and nerfed RG. I really think the HP stacking going on is going to take a small step because of this but it might not, who knows? What I think you should be paying attention to this patch riot is how often challenging smite is being taken both in the jungle and top lane. Look at nerfing or changing that, then use the next patch to determine if Cinderhulk and the tanky Junglers are still a problem and if so, nerf accordingly.

That is all for now friends.

They could try giving Warrior's Enchant it's 5 AD back. Haha, 5 AD

Top laners are running Smite almost exclusively to get a jungle-only item...and that item isn't a problem? Really?

I feel like that's more of an issue with it offering 25% bonus health, rather than the AOE damage. I'd rather see that changed than recducing the AOE damage (that Tanks need to clear). And the fact that Sunfire is kinda... meh.

On, top of that, I think alot of people (myself included) think that the other 3 enchants need work. Devourer is conceptually... wrong, Brutalizer needs to be removed anyway, and Mangus itself is just boring old stats.

The5lacker1 votes

Absolutely. The 25% bonus Health is a staggeringly terrible idea.

I don't think there's anything wrong with Devourer. Jungler =/= Babysitter. And while Magus is a stat stick, it's a more efficient stat stick than Morello's, which is...impressive, to say the least.

Except Old Ancient golem offered the bonus HP all the same in season 3 as well as armor and CDR. The hp bonus is fine. Overall Cinderhulk is fine and at most, needs a slight nerf.

Then explain to me why its not only one of THE MOST BOUGHT ITEMS IN THE GAME (behind boots) but TOPLANERS are buying it. Toplaner's didn't buy golem, that's for sure.

Because you didn't need smite to buy jungle items in s4 and s3 and ancient golem alone wasn't good enough to buy just as a tank item.

ItsStout1 votes

Its not necessarily that it requires the jungler to farm, but rather that it DEPENDS on them farming. Its a core item that's not reliable enough to buy in many cases, and is outshined by Warrior or Cinderhulk due to reliability.

What's wrong with 25% extra bonus health when item 3031 item 3089 exists?

I'm all for toning it down a little bit, but the champion still has to build health to make use of it. Glass cannon bruisers who build two defense items aren't going to get much oomph out of it, and item 3151 item 3153 will soften that full-tank.

Guess what was just buffed?

Even better.

Let's hope Liandries gets a little tweaking. Mages won't be able to nuke tanks, but they'll be able to soften them up a little bit.

Unfortunately it'll make adc's stronger against every class, so a few (like Vayne) might get a love-tap nerf if it proves too much. Hopefully not, but we'll see.

Did you not read a single thing I said, brother? They're running smite to get the skirmishing sabre, the Cinderhulk is just a byproduct.

The5lacker1 votes

No they're not, and you're delusional if you honestly think that people are running Smite exclusively to get the world's worst Exhaust impression.

You've got it completely backwards: Cinderhulk is the problem, Dueling Smite is the byproduct.

Yeah you're dumb

Nerf SS, I promise you smite in top lane is no longer a thing.

Yeah man, just like I'm delusional.

But I'll break it down for you since you asked so nicely.

Top laners are running smite for skirmishing Sabre, not Cinderhulk. Top laners have the benefit of farm, they can get tanky much faster without smite and building full tank items. The only reason they're sacrificing a mid game tank spike in normal tank items is because Skirmishing Sabre gives them both a huge damage spike as well as a tank build path in one. It's a combination that's so powerful, they're willing to sacrifice an escape based summoner spell and early tank spike to take this. If it didn't have the damage amp + reducing the damage of a single target, why would you sacrifice so much power for just a tank item that half of the component offers no laning stats? You wouldn't. Nobody in their right mind would. Because just taking farm with normals summoner spells and buying tank items like FH or SV is a much better spike in tankiness than just a Cinderhulk is.

ItsStout1 votes

There's absolutely NO TOPLANER who would trade flash or ignite (in Hecarim's case) for just Skrimisher's.

are you sure? why did nobody run ancient golem in top lane? is it really the 25% bonus health?

spirit of the ancient golem Stats +200 health +20 Armor +10% cooldown reduction Passive UNIQUE: +25% bonus health

so why didnt they get it all last season?

just something to think about.

Exactly, it wasn't being built then when you still had good tanks - what changed? Tanks have been buffed and the smite upgrades give tanks more options. Skirmishing Sabre gives tanks a huge damage spike they probably shouldn't have, it's a combination of damage to a single target and durability in one. The small burn that Cinderhulk has that ancient golem didn't have plus gromp buff doesn't make up the difference here, a big part of it is truly skirmishing Sabre.

Spirit of the ancient golem. Gave less HP (which also scaled off its own passive), didn't have damage tied to it, and also gave tanks sustain.

The new item literally means the tanks don't need sustain because they can stand in the farm and get it without casting too much combined with an item that scales into late game well and is better than sunfire early game. 35% tenacity and a ward isn't all that much with all the mobility and knock-ups in the game now.

The problem with tanks last season was that they required time to ramp up as they should, so they aren't monsters all game. Currently the second the tank gets Cinderhulk + a second item they have outscaled almost everybody and just abuse the lead. Tanks were never meant to be early-mid game. They were supposed to be beefy mid game and huge late game and then falling off once the ADC finally out scaled them if they had a big enough late game.

The challenging smite = you can force trades while abusing the damage on the passive of cinderhulk which is already too strong while taking reduced damage on your now bigger hp pool. And one thing you forget about giving Tanks, the role meant to stick and force focus, extra damage to sticking you create problems.

It's mostly HP stacking now mid game, which is why I'm saying I'm curious to see how Botrk changes impact this. That's why I wouldn't be in such a rush to nerf Cinderhulk just yet.

Gutting or removing Sabre is a quick fix for smite top (to an extent), but not for Cinderhulk, and the issues with Cinderhulk were still obvious before it started getting bought by top Hecarim and Shyvana.

Cinderhulk will likely need to be good for tanks to remain viable, since the second it's sensible to you'd generally rather have early power on a jungler (which pushes tank junglers back out of the meta). Getting Cinderhulk balanced is just about putting the item at "good, but not so good that Rengar buys it."

Well that's why I think Botrk being buffed could easily start seeing less of it? I just don't want to be so quick to kill Cinderhulk because I think it's concept is fine. I'm just concerned with Skirmishing Sabre and the power it gives tanks to do damage they probably shouldn't be doing. Cinderhulk might need a tweak, and who knows, maybe warrior could use a slight buff? Either way, I'm actually pretty happy with the current balance and direction of the game - I just don't want to see Riot suddenly olaf the shit out of Cinderhulk. Feel me, son?

Warrior should not get a flat-out buff, but rather a reconception. As should the other jungle items but Cinderhulk.

The problem with Warrior and Magus is that other, non-jungle items are ultimately superior to them come late-game. Both items offer nothing unique beyond the Smite upgrade. And so Youmuu's/old BC are/were essentially better versions of Warrior, while Morello's or Athene's are essentially superior to Magus.

Devourer has another issue, one that has to do with you being ABSOLUTELY forced to rush the item to get the stacking going (on top of the stacking playstyle being ultimately detrimental to the game if it is any strong).

Devourer is an interesting concept, farm and scale. But it's so hard to pull it off I think in most cases that other enchantments are just less risky, much safer and perform much more consistently.

I have to agree. Cinderhulk isn't the problem. Being able to cripple an enemy's damage output for 6 seconds ( a long damn time for a debuff) is what needs to be addressed.

SIayton1 votes

Tanks are op because skirmishing saber allows them to deal damage on a class of champions that inherently shouldn't excel at damage dealing. I agree that cinderhulk is fine and was needed, and its very nice to see Lee Sin finally crowded out of the jungle. Skirmishing saber just needs to be change somehow so that its not appealing to laners and doesn't let tanks deal massive damage without building damage.
