Something to take away from worlds

I mostly only watched the western teams at worlds, but mainly among them I noticed something very interesting: most of the successful western teams won with non-meta picks than they did with meta picks.

Misfits dropped game 1 against SKT with a fairly standard composition. They then took the series lead as IgNar completely stomped on Blitz and Leona to the point you don’t even see in some solo queue games. Unfortunately, Misfits lost the nexttwo games after they tried to go back to meta picks.

C9 almost took game 1 against WE using Aurelian Sol, then they crushed the next two games using Singed. Once again, it was their return back to meta picks in the next two games where they met their demise.

There’s also something to be said about the fact that the only game Fnatic won was with Malzahar...

I think if the western teams shows a little more ingenuity in their drafting, they could certainly best some of the better Chinese or Korean teams.

Which brings me to my point: meta != better. There are few picks in this game that don’t work so long as you know how to make them work. Certain picks are designed around certain play styles as well as certain game execution, and if utilized properly then they can be as good as or even better than meta picks. It’s more so when they aren’t played correctly that these picks look like absolute garbage.

Of course some champions are naturally under-powered, and there are a few that are naturally over-powered, but these usually get banned and the ones in the middle are all pretty viable. People just need to be willing to try them.

A meta exists, if you can master the meta, it will always be the best way to play, however if you can't learn to master the meta in time, before a big event, than you are far better sticking to your play style, instead of going to the meta, for now you are in a tornamant attempting to do things you don't know how to do.

Yes the meta is the best way to play, BUT ONLY if you master it. For example in my climb to gold, the meta consists of tanky junglers, however I am far better at playing stuff like Kindred or Kayne, that is my play style, and I only have about a month or so before the season ends. i am far better, sticking to my play style to climb in elo, vs trying to learn a new style that will take me two or so weeks to get right.

Once again, the meta is the best way to play, but only if you can master it IN TIME for your event. If you can not, stick to your play style.

Metas are about strength and consistency. It isn't unstoppable, but without proper preparation and strategy, something most people in solo queue don't have, you ain't beating the meta.
