Jungle Ivern?

why the hell does anyone go Jungle Ivern? his passive makes it so he can't attack or be attacked by wild animals (excluding dragon and baron) so why do people run smite with him as a jungler when smite is useless on him?

smite is still useless. Ivern can plant a grove then while is grows he can go do something else then return to it later and trigger it. still no reason to have smite.

Okay, three reasons.

Firstly, because you can not get a Hunter's Talisman if you don't have Smite. Hunter's Talisman gives you bonus experience for clearing jungle monsters, .. or in Ivern's case "freeing" jungle monsters. I have made the argument before that you can actually start with Hunter's Potion and by consuming charges as you clear, end up clearing more camps before you get too low to continue. Theoretically, you should be able to clear more camps with more health and mana with this strategy, but you will be behind in level. Ivern has low base scaling, and high AP scaling so this shouldn't hurt him too much because he gains more benefit from gold than he does from exp. However, .. this doesn't really seem to make that much of a difference.

Second, you normally want to start on the blue side. Place a grove on wolves, then blue, smite blue instantly clearing it, granting level 2, and taking the buff. By smiting the blue buff you recover some of the health that it has cost you to place two groves, and the blue buff will help to restore the mana cost and should allow you to have no mana issues for the remainder of your first full clear. You place a grove on gromp, walk to place a grove on raptors, and by the time you have done that your grove on wolves should be fully matured. Grove Krug, grove and smite red, then walk back to clear gromp or raptors (I am starting to question if I have my order perfect lol) then the other, and finish with Krugs. There will come a point in this where you are probably too low on health to instantly place a grove when you get to the next camp so you will need to wait a few seconds.

Third, Ivern is great at invading if you have smite. Placing a grove on your enemy's camp then smiting it allows you to get in and out in seconds. You can even do this AS THE ENEMY IS FIGHTING THE MONSTER. It's so tilting!

Ivern has a really fast clear. I have actually played a match where I took Unsealed Spellbook, starting with Smite and Teleport and Hunter's Potion to start. I placed a ward by blue and ran my clear by placing a grove on Gromp, Blue (smite), Wolves, Raptors, Red, then Krugs, ticking charges of my potion the whole time. As soon as I finished placing the grove on Krug I teleported to my ward. By the time I arrived Gromp was fully matured, and I just followed my path, clearing every camp along the way. I believe it was just over 3 minutes when I cleared Krugs, and I was full health and mana. I don't believe any other jungler can do that.

Honestly though, .. I have never tried to take Ivern without Smite, but I think these reasons do enough to convince me that it is worth it.

But here is my suggestion, .. try playing him yourself. I didn't see any Ivern in your match history, but maybe you haven't played him in PVP. Try playing him in the jungle with Smite first because I think you will see the benefit right away, .. then if you are still unsure, try playing him in the jungle without Smite. I would also recommend that you start with Hunter's Talisman, even though I personally don't think it is necessary. You should focus more on understanding how he works as a champion before you start trying to deviate from the normal strategies.

A word of warning though. IVERN IS NOT A CARRY JUNGLER. He is a utility jungler, and that really means that he can provide a lot of benefits for your team, .. but if your team doesn't take advantage of those benefits, .. there is a pretty good chance you are going to lose. :(

Oh, and as I suggested earlier, you can take Unsealed Spellbook if you really don't like Smite. I do think it is important early on, but as you gain level, the health/mana cost, and the time it takes for a grove to mature all go down. There does come a point where you really don't need smite for anything other than securing Dragon(s), Herald, and Baron. You can also complete a jungle item and smite champions .. but I wouldn't personally.

And holy shit, sorry about the book.

lol. while i would take up on your suggestion there are two (well three) reason why i wont. 1: i can't jg for shit since i mainly use range (except Gangplank once in a full moon). so i would not do that. 2: ivern is super weak as his only offense ability is Daisy and that at lvl 6. 3: smite is useless since it cant hit champions unless you grab a jg item which, unless you are a devote jg, will eat up an item spot for more important items. so while he may be for the bold, i dont think i'll use Ivern.
