Everybody agrees that Zyra's Passive doesn't add much to her gameplay. She's also no longer AP mid.

5G8Nri0B54··40 votes·5,571 views

Combine that with the fact that Morello promised like a year or more ago that he was planning on reworking Zyra to be more plant oriented and less of a nuke mage.

Don't know about you, but common sense tells me that those 3 birds can be killed with a single stone.

Simply put, rework her so that she's going to be an AP mid as she was intended to be. Support players gets pampered enough by Riot what with tuning so many AP mids till they are only viable as a Support.

Whatever it may be, rework her starting with that Passive. Make it into something that adds to her gameplay. Make it into something that cuts off ANY chance she has of ever becoming a Support so that she can be an AP mid as she is supposed to be. And make her into something Morello promised he was going to design her to be on the eve of her gutting.

Is it so hard to want her Support to either be nonexistent or not overpowering...without getting her AP mid gutted? You know when I play as Chogath, hitting my Q can be one of the hardest things in the world. But there's always an exception to that rule such as when my target happens to be Zyra.

She's not really that weak honestly. WQ can make farming in lane very easy as well as being some top end harass if you land the Q and a couple plant hits.

You just have to know what you can face and be sure to ward very well. A single trinket will not protect you from Lee Sin.

Once you survive the laning phase you have a lot of vision and CC to make picks easy and you bring a ton of teamfight damage. A full combo followed by a bunch of plant hits in a teamfight will easily make you out damage the ADC. You just have to play safe early game. If champions like Anivia and Veiger can do it, Zyra can.

Not saying she's a top pick. But she's not as weak as people claim.

And Kog'maws passive is useless on an ADC.

Death passives are awful on everyone except Karthus (revive passives are separate).

I'd say Sion's is OK, but I'd agree that death passives are generally bad on carries.

have you ever played Dota?

support =/= shields/boosts

having more champions to choose from it's funnier

if you don't want Zyra to be a support, then i don't want Leona, Blitzcrank and Thresh to be supports, because they are TANKS

Zyra is a Mage Support

Janna is a Pure Utility Support

Leona is a Tank Support

i don't see anything bad about that...i don't want to play Janna/Nami/Soraka every game because some dude thought those are the only "true" supports

P.S. don't ask for a rework, every single skill is 100% right except the passive wich i find kinda dumb (even if it's really cool lore-wise)

You can still go bot without being a Support. :/ But don't muddy up the waters by calling Zyra one when she does nothing to SUPPORT her team members. Also, I've played DotA. Lina with an upgraded R and level 5 Dagon can outright delete enemy champions on command by doing the Legends equivalent of 2000 damage in under a second at long range. ask Rito why didn't they give her proper AP scalings to compensate the nerfs

Actually, APC Veigar bot is great. Allows you to coordinate with higher damage supports who lack CC, because you have a long stun to help make up for it(I'm thinking Orianna mostly, or a Karma perhaps. Nidalee too.) Or it can be used with another long cc support to make the whole fight consist of you doing damage, while the enemy dies. (Blitz, Thresh, Fiddle, Morg all come to mind.) Or you can just have a utility support, and lack synergy with your lane partner :( (Janna support would do nothing for Veigar but add some slight damage, maybe help reduce damage from poke, and peel for him when a gank comes. Oh wait, Veigar peels better anyway.) But a Veigar support is fun as well. Run kill lanes with Cait, Vayne, or Jinx. Just add more damage to everyone else, with a long stun. You can also share the CS in a infinite scaling lane with Sion, or better, Nasus.

But the best lane of all is Veigar/Annie botlane. We heard you like stuns. So we put stuns on your stuns. We heard you like damage. So we put damage on you stuns too. We also added some damage to your damage.

You're the one muddying the waters. Support is a class, but it is also a role. When we talk about "support zyra," we are referring to using zyra in the support role, i.e. zero CS, buys sightstone, goes bot with the ADC. That does not mean she is part of the support class, which includes nami, janna, etc.

The hyperbole is strong in this statement. Sion has no means to be a mage, whereas Zyra has the means to be a support (good CC, decent base damage). Not a great or traditional support, yes, but a support in today's game nevertheless.

Look at Sion prerework. He could be played as an AP mage (zombie wizard), and often was simply because that was his least shit build (AD was kited to hell and took forever to be useful; AP was useful for the first 15 minutes then forgotten). Reworking Zyra who was built to be a mage into a support is almost the same thing.

Well, aren't Morgana, Annie, and occasionally Vel'Koz like that already? Why not have champions play multiple roles?

5G8Nri0B542 votes

And the last time you saw Morgana and Annie in mid is when?

Also, seeing Riot's handling of Zyra, it's pretty clear that even if they could theoretically balance a champion that could be both...........they clearly don't have what it takes to balance Zyra so that she can AP mid again without doing something about her Support.

Sachabot3 votes

They could give her a different passive, one oriented towards trading/harassing. It would increase her strength mid while not harming her supporting abilities. Hell, it might even strengthen her secondary position. How about this:

Passive - Brambles: When Zyra autoattacks a champion, all plants within range attack her target and inflict Brambles, slowing them by X% for Y seconds.

I'm not a Zyra player, so I don't recall what her plant AI is like, but I think that would allow her to trade/harass better without having to change her play style overly much, no matter her role. Since her melee plants already slow, they might have to be tweaked, or maybe this should bleed the target. I'm not sure. I don't feel she needs a total rework, but her passive needs to be changed.

Lonefire Blossom6 votes

Passives like Kog and Zyra are counterproductive, you're a carry, you're not suppose to die and your team should try to protect you.

Kowe The Ewok6 votes

If Zyra would die she transforms into a plant for 1s (+0.5s / 100 AP). While being a plant Zyra can't use her abilities, but creates a Thron Spitter at target location every second. After transforming back Zyra is left with 3% of her maximum health.

-> Her passive becomes more Aatrox/Karthus-ish rather than being just a weaker version of Kog Maw's. -> The duration as well as the damage of Thorn spitter scales with AP, making it weak on support but strong on midlaners -> The passive "compensates" for her insane squishiness and complete lack of mobility by delaying her death while being able to still DPS (Therefor she's basically a 1HKO after it ends)

5G8Nri0B543 votes

Huh....

This actually isn't that bad. I can get behind something akin to this. Plus it ties in to her gameplay sort of with how it produces more turrets.

SecretAgentHulk3 votes

What's to justify? He obviously likes sniping after he dies, and feels that it contributes meaningfully to Zyra's gameplay because he has a meaningful shot to either a) kill an opponent outright, or b) take an opponent down far enough that the team can get the kill. What other reason is there for thinking that Zyra's passive does add to her gameplay? He also provided as much justification for his point of view as you did in your original post; were you just hating for the sake of hating, then?

I agree with you btw, because I can juke and apparently nobody in Bronze can account for that when aiming, but that was just silly.

ShardWintreswolf2 votes

Eh, part of it may be that people find having a long-range, thin-hitbox skillshot for a high-damage passive which does equal damage no matter how many enemies it hits to be more difficult then a passive should be (Skillshots are hard D:) And as I have now specified, its useful for creating a bit of extra damage in teamfights especially if you have ulted and have plants up to slow/deal extra damage even after you're dead (and the Expose Weakness mastery helps because even if Zyra's passive doesn't proc it, not sure if it does, her plants do). Plus items like Liandry's and Rylai's do proc with plants b/c they count as spells and are good for further reducing the chance of an enemy escape without burning flash.

ShardWintreswolf2 votes

TL;DR in bold, or just read what I wrote above:

SecretAgentHulk hit the nail on the head there, I feel she's in a decent place right now in terms of both her damage and kit, The only possible complaint I have is the delay before the passive can be fired, but that doesn't mean I don't understand why it's there (Firing a powerful, long-ranged shot instantly without giving the enemy or allies time to react is a tad cheap, plus it does allow for a bit more suspense for anyone waiting for the shot to come out). I personally find her passive to be teamfight oriented and is a good way to deal a nice chunk of damage to ensure a kill is finished off, or to help it happen. That said, in a 1v1, the best way to make sure it is effective is to get the enemy to use any escapes in your initial burst and if you die, fire it to finish them off with some assistance from a gank or proper targeting. Plus items like Liandry's and Rylai's do proc with plants b/c they count as spells and are good for further reducing the chance of an enemy escape without burning flash in order to dodge the shot.

**My main reasons for not specifying were to get some attention (and point out the fact that using the term "everybody" in this case is inaccurate when there is no data produced to show any evidence that anyone disagrees/agrees at all). And because the statement "I disagree" means I clearly find her passive does indeed add to her kit and spare you all the brick wall of text I now have written to specify like you have asked. **

5G8Nri0B542 votes

That's not adding to her kit. It just "works" without having anything to do with her kit at all.

How does it fit to her overall theme?

How does it fit into her unique playstyle that makes her especially needing such a Passive over anyone else (or someone melee or dive-happy for that matter...)

Ideally you'd want to give the champion both of the above. But often times you can settle with just one. Zyra's Passive...fullfills none of the above.

ShardWintreswolf1 votes

Then what about Sion's passive, how does it add to his kit after death?

I've felt her passive fits under the idea that Zyra, at this point, has nothing to lose literally speaking. If she dies that's the end of her this time around so why die without using every very last bit of strength, especially when it so simplistic, but clearly takes a lot of energy to use. It's in my opinion, something of a trump card that she cannot abuse, but can use if she so desperately needs (transforming herself and firing a large, high-damage shot at long range). Its a rather interesting point in her lore, brief, but it does open up a range of possibilities, her passive being one of those.

I feel it does the same as her ultimate and plants do. It creates a sense of disorder and chaos in the same way that you respond when Stranglethorns comes out or being snared and chipped away by plants. You want to get away from it, and in doing so, it causes you to expend mana/summoner spells/actives and separates you from your teammates in a teamfight, or provides one of Zyra's allies a chance to catch you and finish you off should the passive not do it because your hp is now likely rather low. Zyra does deserve it over say a melee or dive-happy champion because in order to actually make good use of the shot, the ideal way to do so is her kit ( much like all other passives to their respective kits/champs).

In return, I'd like to ask if you have any suggestions on what you feel her passive should be then? Even if its just a general idea.

5G8Nri0B542 votes

Then what about Sion's passive, how does it add to his kit after death?

Refer to the first point, it fits with his overall theme far better than Zyra becoming a suicide sniper. But if you want to also delve into his gameplay, it's still far more fitting than Zyra's because of his tendency to be deep into the enemy team, and for him, taking damage and even dying for his team is part of his function. Obviously you'd want to live, but tis life of a tank, especially with all the Last Whisper's running around. When he is dead, he is in prime position to go after whoever he wants. He actively puts himself in harms way as per his function, and he is given a chance to actually inflict real damage when the enemy thinks they finally took him down. Not to mention he is able to tank a few more times because of the Passive.

Ironically Sion's Passive that ensures his death somehow lets him tank longer and better than Zac's Passive that the enemy can kill without realizing due to their abundance of AoE abilities.

As for Zyra's being on her (and Kog'maw too), it's literally nothing but a lazy cop-out because they wanna be done with their work and just release the champion as they are.

What about that Passive makes it so that it works all that well on Zyra? How does it in anyway syndergize with her kit at all?

In return, I'd like to ask if you have any suggestions on what you feel her passive should be then? Even if its just a general idea.

Consider what sets Zyra apart from other champions. For her, it's fully autonomous but temporary pets. She has probably one of the most reliable pet because unlike Heimer, hers stay around regardless of distance, and unlike Malz and Annie, hers don't spend 75% of the fight running back and forth between enemy and master. As a side-effect of her turret style, she is capable of landing multiple continuous hits from her ability unlike a burst mage via her autonomous turrets.

For that, the ability to set multiple plant turrets is without contest, THE thing that defines her. Therefore her Passive should either play on that, facilitates that, or somehow flows well with that play-style.

  • Option 1 - This one plays straight into the fact that she can lay an endless unstinting assault upon the enemy Bramble Fungus: All base damage and maybe even ratios nerfed. Her Passive now inflicts bonus magic damage upon all auto-attack and plant turret attacks and applies a bramble stack. Her Passive's magic damage increases based on the number of stacks on her target. While the base damage is meh, it has surprisingly high ratio making it necessary for Zyra to farm up for AP.

Thematically speaking, roses are notorious for the fungus it holds that messes your shit up, hence why you must wear gloves when handling roses, ALWAYS. Gameplaywise, it plays directly to the fact that Zyra is capable of constantly inflicting small ticks of damage during the entire fight, this isn't 100% unique to Zyra, but it fits her playstyle AND it fits her thematically unlike how it would be on other champions. This Passive will also rely on AP scaling rather than bases.

This way if Zyra goes Support, she's there solely for her CC. But if she wants to also deal damage, either she's going to be stealing a whole lotta farm and kills, or she's going to have to midlane for farm.

  • Option 2 - You want to keep the stupid death Passive? Fine. Floral Reincarnation: When Zyra dies, the player have X seconds to select a plant or seed that is on the field. That seed begins to morph into a bud with half of Zyra's hp and resistances. After Y seconds if the bud is still alive, Zyra will revive out of that bud. Like any revival Passive, this will likely have a cooldown too. The bud will be revealed for all players to see even if it's in a bush. If there are no plants or seeds nearby, Zyra just dies.

I'm not that big a fan of this one because it does literally nothing to help Zyra become an AP mid again over being a Support. However I consider it an improvement simply because it fits her both thematically and plays into her plant summoning playstyle. Often times putting plants close to an enemy is preferred for damage, with this Passive, the player chooses between a safer revival or more damage.

  • Option 3 - This one forces players to choose between staying safe or risking themselves for more effective damage Botanical Bond: Zyra and her plants gains some sorta power-up based on how close they are to each other. Whatever the power-up is, it should be enough to be worth risking Zyra's butt to get so close to the danger-zone. Also the duration of the plants are prolonged if Zyra is nearby.

As explained before, Zyra's plants are often placed at pretty close to the enemy while the slow and fragile Zyra stays further back. This Passive rewards Zyra for risking her green butt. She can still safely harass at a distance, however it is less effective than if she bring herself to close to the vicinity to her plants. This is especially risky for Support Zyra who have Leona's, Sona's, Thresh's, and the enemy ADC to watch out for. So if they only try to safely poke, they will find their harass a lot less effective.

And like a previous one before, it plays directly into her unique niche that most other champions do not fill.

Personally speaking, Option 1 is the simplest and probably the best of the 3.

ShardWintreswolf1 votes

To begin with, I'd argue that Zyra and Koggles maintain the kinds of passives that they do as a final chance to do some hefty damage. In both cases, especially in teamfights, the midlaner and adc are high targets because once they are out of the fray, all that's left is the tanks and maybe a fighter. **Both champs have a nice bit of range to them but do not have a solid escape because of this, going down means the enemy either had to out range and out damage you, or dive on top of you and eat some damage to do so (unless they're fed and/or managed to catch you off guard). **These passives are the result of being caught in a teamfight or alone where you can:

  1. Take out a high priority target
  2. Help your team
  3. At the very minimum, act as a distraction or deterrent against any greedy champs at low hp that want to go for champ behind you (assassins)
  • Especially in crowded teamfights or in the jungles

Since the void puppy isn't the topic at hand, I'll shift my focus to Zyra alone (if you want to discuss Kog'maw, I'd love to but, save it untill we finish up on Zyra, and his will sound rather similar)

Her kit synergizes quite well with the skillshot because of the slow from her Vine Lasher plants and/or the extra chip damage from her Thorn Spitters. As if this weren't enough to ensure either a clean shot or kill, her ultimate bolsters her plants and increases their attack speed to make things even easier. Not to mention getting an early Rylai's gives her a bit more survivablity and damage as well as a slow for all of her spells. The passive does good damage regardless of whether she is supporting or in the midlane as a mage and, as I've said before, creates a bit of extra chaos by getting enemies to spread out for her team.

For your ideas, while they have a nice feel to them, only one has any validity beyond thematics with her current playstyle and/or kit and that is the first one, Unfortunately, all 3 hold decent flaws:

OPTION 1: To begin with, in order for this passive to become at all viable, Zyra must become less of a bursty mage and given more ability to continuously poke (at which point you might as well just do a full kit rework or at least her Rampant Growth spell [W]). We have learned that in order for a stacking passive ( I'm assuming you meant staking in terms of champs like Nasus, Cassiopeia, and Veigar) to work, it requires heavy number crunching, tweaks to other ratios/scaling to even remotely work and either relies almost entirely on said stacks, or needs other abilities which ,while incredibly strong with the stacks, can stand alone as at least decent. The idea is good and matches her depiction as a plant. The problem is that even if you mean stacking in the way that Vel'koz or Braum passives stack up, Zyra's plants are already in a good place, and all this passive will do is relocate some of her current power into a stacking system which:

  • Either removes more power than it will often give unless the game reaches a late stage, making her very weak early game so being harassed out of lane means the end for her for almost all of the game (like preventing a Nasus from farming)

  • Forces Zyra to be extremely aggressive in order to hunt out stacks which she currently does not have the mana for while turning her into a cost hungry version of Vel'koz and removing a good chunk of her originality in terms of her playstyle

  • Or relocates damage already in her kit without anything new, making a rather pointless passive

OPTION 2: Her goal as a champion is not to go in and fight as opposed to standing back and letting her plants do so for her. Everythnig she has punishes the enemy for getting closer and eventually result in a painful amount of damage, even if she is killed in the process (Closer to the flower, Closer to the thorns). Getting caught is bad for Zyra, plain and simple, even with a passive like this one because she is too squishy, it costs 1 of her plants/buds (which cannot die or be destroyed beforehand) which cuts off a nice bit of her damage, and would be incredibly easy to kill because of her rather low resistances and would turn out rather useless unless its at an incredibly long range from anybody in the fight. Plus, in a 1v1, its horrid, even if there's a plant around a wall, it doesn't take much more than a little walk and maybe a hit or two to kill. So unless you plan to become the master of all baits at all times, its not happening.

** OPTION 3:** As I stated above, getting caught is bad for Zyra, and her plants do not have the longevity to keep up with this for of harass (having only 3 hp, regardless of the amount of time they are up). It does not provide her with any extra stats for being so deeply in a fray, in fact it hardly rewards her at all. Again, she is far to squishy to be inside a teamfight and in order to make any use of this passive at all, she'd need a major adjustment in both damage and protective stats. This is not suited for a mage/caster at all and would sooner kill her than anything else regardless of where she is on the map.

**While I'm not saying these are bad ideas, I am saying they need quite a lot more thought if anything close to any of these would replace her current passive as they do not have much of a benefit to Zyra with her current kit/stats even in the cases where you suggest tweaking them. **

5G8Nri0B541 votes

Son of a **** I hate the "go to comment" button and how it only works 50% of the time. As if it wasn't hard enough to navigate through messages already.

Anyways, there's some pretty serious miscommunication going on here. It looks like you misinterpreted a number of things, or atleast missed some of the main idea.

OPTION 1: Zyra must become less of a bursty mage and given more ability to continuously poke

Yeah I thought that was already heavily implied when I said "all base damage and maybe even ratios nerfed". I was saying a chunk of her scaling should be moved to her Passive which focuses more on sustained damage than burst. This way the player is forced to find a way to continuously land her hits on the opponent in order to do truly monstrous damage, but in return, her long term sustained damage will be massive if the battle persists long enough.

( I'm assuming you meant staking in terms of champs like Nasus, Cassiopeia, and Veigar)...The problem is that even if you mean stacking in the way that Vel'koz or Braum passives stack up

COMPLETELY different stacks. Think more along the lines of Orianna's stacks, but rather than just the champion's AA, it's the champion AND the plants attacks. Almost as though those plants are a literal extension of her will. Or to put it another way, imagine if Orianna's Passive mattered past the laning phase. Probably not so quickly capped off too as it's intended to be a long-term investment in battle.

If Zyra does get harassed out of lane so easily atm, it's because CertainlyT literally gutted every aspect of her kit, hence the anger over her being incapable of going mid now but only being a Support. A Passive such as this will obviously require the rest of her kit's numbers to be tweaked around. The idea is her numbers be high enough to go mid again, but with her burst and base damage reduced to make her less a threat in botlane where she isn't farming or building as much AP. She will rely less on her base damage and more on her Passive's scaling and ability to ramp up damage.

OPTION 2:

Yeah I presented this solely to appease those who actually like the dead Zyra concept...I already said it's not one I'm particularly fond of, but atleast then it'll have SOME relations to her gameplay if flawed. Of the 3 this is the weakest, but it's constrained by the idea of such a long range champion having a suicide Passive.

OPTION 3: her plants do not have the longevity to keep up with this for of harass...It does not provide her with any extra stats for being so deeply in a fray, in fact it hardly rewards her at all... she is far to squishy to be inside a teamfight and in order to make any use of this passive at all

Yeah there was a reason why I left Option 3 so open...and you just listed them all.

You're only thinking of Zyra as she currently is, the stupidly undertuned unfit-for-mid Zyra without this Passive. My point* "Zyra and her plants gains some sorta power-up based on how close they are to each other"*, is that Zyra and her plants will gain a substantial power-up to make the risk more than worth it. As in the plants will not have just 3 blocks of hp, Zyra will not be nearly as defenceless, etc. when such a Passive kicks.

And also for her plants to have a greater duration too so as not to leave the poor girl stranded in the middle of the danger zone unprotected. I don't mean something trivial like "plants do 5 more damage". I mean something substantial in both survivability and damage output.

Such a Passive will be less likely to be utilized in botlane, but in midlane, it will be much more usable against a single opponent who likely won't fudge her shit up like Leona would.

Sorry for not being clearer, I can kinda assume some of the stuff were a given.

ShardWintreswolf1 votes

Point taken, and to be fair, I tend to answer these later at night so I might not be functioning at 100% throughout. That, and I did base my line of thinking rather close to her current kit and passive.

For Option 1: I did overlook stacking like Orianna's. That said, how long would said stacks remain active, and how much would they scale? these two things are the core of how this passive would go over. Not to mention that in order for Zyra to avoid simply being harassed out of lane, the adjustments to her kit would need to lean towards something closer to Azir's soldiers and her ability to direct them at a specific target. this would still leave her quite susceptible to being muscled out of lane, and would need to rely on either a few pokes over a course of a long period of time, or capitalize on a single mistake. using either of these might end up being quite risky because it directs a lot of power to her plants, so chances are summoning them would either need to be more immediate, duration of the plant life or hp needs to be redone, or the number of plants she can have at once needs to be adjusted. This would do more than make her plants either a simplified or overly detailed version of Azir's.

  • As a side note, I don't feel she is actually harassed out of lane very easily at the moment, even with her current kit. she has a god number of ways to deter ganks and still keep herself from being stuck under tower all laning phase. I'm well aware of the numbers behind her nerfs and frankly, while they may have been a bit steep, they do make sense.

Option 2: Not much to say here, it's not really the idea of the death passive I like, nor is it that I specifically want her current passive above all other options, but until/unless a new passive is presented that can actively prove to be of more help and put her in a balanced place, she isn't the most popular champion out there, but from noobs to pros there are a lot of people who play her.

Option 3: Yea, pretty much nothing left to say there either apart from a concern

That being, if Zyra does get such sustainability (with or without her plants) many supports would find this to be very very good because all you need to do is wait for the chance to have the enemy come to her with some plants at the ready, have some CC of some kind at the ready and pin the enemy botlane quite effectively with little fear of being bursted down, all the moreso in the early stages of the game. Possibly removing any form of CC minus her ultimate (regardless of what it is) and replacing it with an effective escape may help to cement her as a Midlaner, but depending on how you do so, it still raises the potential for her to become a secondary toplaner or come up with another way to use her as a support (because of the ultimate, or just her new kit in responce to the passive).

- I have no objections with how Zyra currently is, both as support and Midlane mage (I play both regularly). HOWEVER: any improvements are indeed welcomed and desired provided the reason for improvement is objective, not subjective

Well it´s true that (nearly)nobody likes her passive and I agree with you that it should be changed, but don´t force her into any role. I´m going to be honest,I´m support main and really like to play her as a support, but also, she was the champion that made LoL appeling to me. 1. my brother and my friends started playing.I watched a few games and thought it looks cool,so beofre I started I did some research.I found Zyra and feel in love with her concept. So that´s how I got to play LoL.

ON-TOPIC:So,now that the community has made up their mind to ask for a change(with which I 100% agree)I ask you only for once.Make her new passive synergise with her kit, nothing more.If you try to rework her into a mage or support, your gutting your own options into desingning the best possible passive for her.

Someone posted a suggestion about giving her unique abilities after she dies, which would have brought even more utility for her kit.Sadly it seemed too much.Having 8 abilities on an utility mages, would have been ridiculous OP.

Considering she is supposed to be an AP mid, that her being a good Support to the point where she may even be better as a Support than mid, was an unintended side-effect.

If she can only be one, it needs to be AP mid. Riot should aim to have champions be what they are supposed to be first. Fiddle with extraneous crap like letting MF and Varus be AP mid or Zyra be a Support should be a luxury pursued AFTER the champion becomes what they are first.

There's no issue with an AP mid occasionally being a Support bot. But when not only do they do a clearly better job supporting than AP midding, Riot gives AP mid players the middlefinger by gutting her just to keep her Support role balanced, and proceed to do everything in their power to make AP mid Zyra as weak as possible...

Yeah I'll not weep that an unintended role was shelved in favour of Zyra becoming what she was supposed to be.

This isnt the 1. time that they made a champion that went into a different role and completly wrecked the balance in it.

2 wrongs don't make a right...nor does 3, 4, or 5...

Well I'm asking for your opinion of mages in General. If they rework Zyra, who else should they rework back into mid lane?

5G8Nri0B541 votes

That depends on the other midlaners.

Riot shoved their nerf stick up Zyra so hard that she can only be a Support now, even their recommended build is that of a Support champion now.

Those other midlaners.

  1. Are their primary roles AP mid/AP top?

  2. Are they still primarily a mid/top mage in practice? Or atleast just as good a mid/top as they are in some extraneous role?

Taking ADC/AP as an example, take Varus. Meddler intentionally tuned Varus so that he can theoretically be an AP mid and not be a burden on his team. However, despite his numbers making an AP mid theoretically possible, he is objectively superior as an ADC than he is an AP mid...which is completely fine because his primary role is that of an ADC.

Well take Lissandra as an example. She was designed to be an AP mid right? Because of the current meta, you most likely see her on top instead of mid. Vel'koz is in a similar position as Zyra, though not as bad. He was designed as a mid mage. I'll even use Brand as an example. I don't see him much in mid, but Riot has tried promoting him as a support.

5G8Nri0B541 votes

Vel'koz I can speak with absolute certainty that he's still an effective mid that may be no worse than his role as a Support. I say that because he's become my main for the past few months. When I do go Supporting with Vel'koz, it has less to do with how ability to Support and more to do with his ability to stave off the desire to kill myself when I'm stuck with the babysitter-bot role and allow me to steal kills and not have to hear the ADC bitch about me getting a kill he would never have gotten. And more importantly, despite his own lack of mobility, isn't anywhere near as bad as Zyra in terms of escaping ganks.

As for Lissandra. I believe there was even official Red statement that she was designed to be a top ala Swain and his ilk. Her being mid was secondary to her ability to mess up top laner's shit.

Brand. Brand has always been a problem ever since Riot's developed this mobility fetish.

What about Ryze? Was he built for mid, because I only ever see him top. I don't think Morg and Annie were pushed out of mid but encouraged to support. I never knew that about Swain because the few times I've seen him were as mid. What about Kennen, Vladimir, and Mordekaiser? I know Mord can mid but has been pushed into top.

5G8Nri0B541 votes

I'll start with Morg and Annie. They were pushed out of mid due to their repeated nerfs that were in part, caused by their dominance as Support.

Ryze I haven't paid attention to, but I recall he went from being both to just top after poke mages went in style thanks to Ziggs release.

And as far as I can remember, Vlad has always been top and Mordekaiser has always been mid. I've seen Vlad a few times pre-level 30. But I don't count those games on the grounds that I solo laned a Tryndamere+Garen combo as a Kog'maw at the level of play...or in other words, anything can happen.

Keep in mind, Zyra isn't the only champion who have issues. So just because another champion holds a similar position as hers doesn't mean it's fine.

For instance, a common argument Diana-mains used to defend pre-nerf Diana was that Irelia could be just as bad as Diana was...without realizing that Irelia was in the midst of multiple nerfs and was still dominant at the time despite her multiple nerfs.

Chromatic Eagle3 votes

Well Annie and Morg are popular support picks. If we applied your logic for Zyra to the other champions, you'd risk upsetting a sizable portion of the fanbase. Take Soraka for example. I could be wrong about the context, but she used to be a decent mid laner. Riot reworked her into being specifically support, and I don't think people have played her mid since. I remember some players being upset at her rework during it.
