Where is Wukong?

Why did Wukong fall out of the jungle so hard? He seemed to be really strong early this year, then just completely fall out of competitive play. I saw where he got a nerf to his early game, but it didn't effect him TOO much. I guess I'm just wondering why he's not as picked as he used to be. And if he can fall out so fast, why aren't steps taken like were against him (cutting his early armor reduction on Q in 1/2) on champs like Lee Sin, Elise, or other Junglers that are seen every game?

Sheep mindset. Even in LCS

I believe the item 1039 change with the lose of 5th pot and worse stats may have impacted his first clear that people don't feel he's competitive or something.

I would ALWAYS prefer to play vs Lee Sin, Elise, Evelynn, etc. Than a Wukong. This is something many agree with - because his style of play is very non-responsive. A lock-on engage, armor reduc. basic attack that does extra damage, and an escape all with a AoE damage and knockup. He needs a rework, that allows more interesting games and counter play.

Or it might be just your personal preference

Perhaps...but most of the people I have met agree. Its not like he is op, or that he is harder to play against. Lee is definitely much harder to overcome. Its his lack of counter play, and his non-interactive style. The game is generally unfun, and dependent more on the Wukong's skills than yours.

I still see Wukong played by Wukong mains (I know that's not helpful but I do see him) and when I do see him, I regret not banning him. I'm guessing he's a niche pick - but I think he is very unfun to play against. His flash + ult is ridiculous and he has a good escape turning invis. He can do a lot of damage while remaining somewhat tanky unless he got counter-jungled hard and fell behind.

My understanding is that Wukong was very popular especially on Team Curse, where Voyboy is pretty well known for having a very good Yasuo. Wukong is like Xin Zhao where their playstyle is fairly straightforward, and I think teams were learning how to play against him. I don't think the nerf had anything to do with him becoming less popular, he was kind of like Pantheon where he's a solid jungler and just caught a lot of pro teams off guard. They're all still strong solo q junglers, it's just pro teams are better organized and know how to play against these champions better, also there are just stronger picks at the professional level. For example, almost every pro jungler is amazing on Lee Sin, who also has an ultimate that can combo with Yasuo, and is better early game where snowballing is much more effective since pro players are less likely to randomly drop a lead in lane.

It's not that Wukong sucks or anything, there's just better for each thing. Like someone else mentioned, he's a niche pick. I love Wukong. I got my ass whupped by Wukong when I started playing this game back in January. I've been fascinated with him ever since. The nerfs apparently hit him mega-hard, but I still like using him for jungling. In terms of when I pick him though... this is why:

I use three junglers competitively: Volibear, Shyvana, and Wukong.

I use Volibear because he's a mobile tank with really strong ganks and decent aoe. He can still dish out some serious damage without AD items with his W. He's my safest jungle pick. I default him if I'm first pick, and pick him if I want to shut down an enemy champ early or gank lanes hard or we just need a tank.

I use Shyvana because of her silly fast jungle clear. She's not terribly dependable for ganks because after I burn an exhaust on one lane, it's hard to gank others unless they have CC, but her counterjungling and pure teamfight ability and lane clear for mid to lategame pressure is ridiculously insane. I tend to pick her if my team has decent CC already or I'm up against a jungler I can easily shut down or a jungler I need the fast clears for to keep up.

Wukong... he doesn't excel or beat either Voli nor Shyv in what I use them for and he's blue dependent early-on which is usually a big hell no for me when jungling. Blue should go to midlane or AP top. I go Wukong if I want a happy medium, but his ganks aren't as strong as Voli's and his pressure isn't as strong as Shyv's. It's rare I use him because there's simply no need to. The ult is nice for teamfights and an instant kill with a Yasuo on our team, but that's about it, unfortunately. He's a solid pick, but there's no reason to choose him over someone else if you're trying to do something specific for your team comp. I will say he's better in terms of being an offensive presence in a teamfight that's hard to hit, but only because of the last part. I carry with Shyv and decimate in teamfights. The escape isn't needed. So... yeah. Wukong doesn't have much of solid reason for being picked as opposed to anyone else unless you want that balance (which is useful sometimes, but when out of mana... sol.) If you want balance without the mana dependency, there's Lee Sin who does everything he does, better -he even counters Wukong. The only reason I pick Wukong over Lee Sin is because I don't like how Lee Sin feels to play. There's no logical reason though.

:\ Wukong may just need a rework or something. He's not in a bad place, but he's not in a good-enough one to be seen as much as many other champs.

I'm sorry but your entire response made me facepalm. Wukong is a much better pick than Voli or Shyv. Maybe you just don't know how to play him, especially since you just started in January...

Not for either of the reasons I pick Shyv or Voli for. If you're going to contribute, contribute. Don't pop in and say "You're wrong." and not provide any reasons why. Wukong ganks better than Shyv and is better in teamfights than Voli. That should be clear in my post, but his ganks and CC aren't as strong as Voli's and his wave clear and jungle clear isn't as fast as Shyv's. So... feel free to contribute to the conversation. It's about why Wukong isn't getting picked that often. Care to post?

You said they should rework him because you don't think he's as strong as Voli or Shyv. Wu's jungle clear is just as strong and probably better late than either of them. He also brings heavy CC to team fights while pouring out damage.

I would have added more earlier, but I was too busy laughing with my friends about you saying he needs a rework.

I said he could benefit from a rework because he's not stronger than champs like Lee Sin, I didn't say stronger than Shyv or Voli, that was for niche picks -unique specializations. Don't put words in my mouth. If you'd like to have a real conversation I'd be happy to oblige. I never said Wukong sucked, he's just not strong enough to pick over someone like Lee Sin or unique enough for someone more specialized. He's not picked as often because of that. How many Lees do see picked? How many Wukongs? Big difference between the two in pick rate. Also, if you want to actually engage in a conversation, actually read what's said. I never said he "needs" a rework. He doesn't. He's perfectly fine; but he could benefit from one for the purpose of making him more desirable to play. That should be quite clear if you take the time to actually understand what's being said.

Champions in competitive play tend to be picked in groups. Wukong was picked in a time where AD Assassins ruled the jungle, where his ultimate was far more impactful than the other picks. Wukong got nerfed alongside Elder Lizard, and some other AD Assassins got nerfed too, which shifted the jungle picks toward tanky champions again.
