The reason frozen heart is underperforming.

This is an item that gives cdr. mana, armor, and a passive that slows attack speed in an aoe.

you would expect this to be an item you build if you are against multiple ad auto attackers, yet this item is really unpopular compared to how it used to be.

Lets do some math, Lets just say that the tank has about 2000 hp and 60 armor at a given time. The new frozen heart buff + the base armor will knock the effective hp up to 170% of what the hp is, so 5400

Keep in mind that hp amounts and armor amounts vary from champion to champion so because effective hp is calculated based off of ratios, it is possible that certain champions may end up with numbers of effective health greater or lower than other champions.

lets look at other armor items now.

Sunfire cape gives 60 armor and 425 hp. so for the calculation we start with 2425 hp and increase it by 120%. You end up with 5335 effective health. Significantly less, but you end up with a unique passive that allows you to kill minions faster that doesn't force you to put abilities on a cooldown.

Randuins gives 400 hp and 70 armor. so 2400 armor increased by 130 % is 5520 effective hp. Alternatively, you gain the attack speed slow if you are hit, AND crit reduction making it a better choice against high crit teams.

thornmail start with 2250 hp and increase by 60+80 = 140% == 5400 effective hp. So its basically equivalent to the frozen heart effective hp, but there is a really important reason why you would never want to go frozen over thornmail.

Any champion that frozenheart is theoretically good against, thornmail is a better buy. When we think of toplane auto attackers, the overwhelming majority of them run conq or have some other form of self heal. In that case thornmail is 100% the better option. It offers both the attack speed slow and grievous wounds, making it a significantly better option when playing into auto attackers. There is also a lot more true damage in the game than there used to, so an hp item that brings you ~250 hp in front of frozen heart ends up being an ignites worth of difference in effective health. The only time you would really consider getting frozen heart is if you are a tank who is playing against a full ad comp. If the enemy has an ap champion it ends up being more effective to buy an mr item so you dont get one shot by ap damage, and the hp gained from the item will factor into the effective health ratio for armor as well.

I mean its kind of cheap and the mana and cdr are good for waveclear, but at that point you might as well just go sunfire cape because it offers better waveclear than any tank ability. Not to mention that you have to put your abilities on cd if you want to waveclear with frozen which can result in death in a lot of lanes.

IDK, too much self heal in the game. If we ever go back to a tank meta where games and fights last longer, and there are no more instagib cheesers this might be an item that comes back given that the attack speed aoe slow tends to be good against people who aren't attacking you, but for now, too much true damage to allow pure armor items through, and too much self heal to not build thornmail.

frozen heart isn't popular because it requires an HP pool to be purchased and kits that people can't run away from. the other armor items come with HP. it's utility doesn't matter because other options can make that utility personal to your character being attacked or your character attacking. why rely on the opponent fighting around you so that your frozen heart is useful, when instead you can just force them to fight on you with randuins and deadmans.

oh right, there's also shit like Fiora and Darius around with the true dmg goodies so HP is at a premium. need to have HP to counter true dmg and the frozen heart just has none.

Frozen heart lacks HP, and is therefore useless against magic damage.

Frozen heart is stupidly cost efficient to the point where its dumb not to get it if you can use it.... but the lack of HP is still awkward.

To put it into perspective; both the passive AND all the mana are free on it. If you need AR, Mana, and CDR, frozen heart is practically a must buy cost efficiency wise.

The reason frozen heart is bad is simple.

Single stat items, unless they give an absurd amount of said stat (like deathcap), are simply inefficient to buy in terms of overall effect (in this case, effective hp). Randuins, deadman’s, and sunfire cape all increase your tankiness versus mages as well, simply because they have hp on them.

Frozen heart does ONE THING and ONE THING well. It makes fighting attack speed physical damage fighters easier while boosting the use of your own abilities.

The only champions who build attack speed and don’t really go crit (as that’s randuin’s territory) are champions like master yi (who does true damage and can negate the as slow), kayle, who does mixed damage, kog’maw, who does mixed damage and has resist penetration, vayne, who does % hp true damage and has an auto reset, and uh, I think that’s about it?

Frozen heart needs to have a unique effect for it to be worth buying considering all it really offers for a short fight is a minor attack speed slow and a bunch of armor (which can easily be penetrated).

This brings us back to items like sterak’s and and GA. These items grant damage, health, and an effect that can increase your healthpool in the short term WITHOUT boosting damage dealt by % health abilities. This is a much more valid way to tank vayne’s W, kog’s W, kai’sa’s passive, fiora’s passive, botrk, liandries, bloodrazor, and etc..

Randuin’s, for example, carries more value in its passives than in its stats. Just that 20% reduced crit damage alone makes you automatically last 25% longer vs crit champions, and it is something that cannot be taken away from you by counterbuilding. That in combination with Health, and attack speed slow, and Armor makes it the absolute best defensive item against any physical dps champion for the most part.

Basically, as it is, Frozen heart needs some unique passive tacked on to make it good. Else as it stands it will only ever by a ryze/kassadin flex defensive item.

Because 15% is nothing compared to the amount of attackspeed in the game. It should trade stats for a much higher % attack speed slow. as is the item is just a bunch of armor and mana with a MINOR debuff.

It's underperforming because it gives only armor and an item like this is only useful early, who the fuck likes buying frozen heart as 3th or 4th item or last item? Nobody, not to mention that almost nobody gets it as 1st or 2nd where it would be most effective. Riot needs to understand that these extremely high defense but no health items are REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY SHITTY BUYS when enemies already have cleaver, or last whisper. Why should anyone bother with this shit? If you make % penetration that high and give tank items low health and high defense people will focus on the few remaining items that still provide reliable tankiness. These are items that either have very high health or overtuned unique effects that are either mandatory based on matchup or consistent in general beause penetration has no effect on them. item 3143 item 3194item 3193 item 3053 item 3083 good tankiness item 3075 against heal (actually just item 3076 because finishing thornmail also sucks hard due to low health) item 3065 if you already heal a lot. Buffing frozen heart with extra armor is honestly a fucking joke, Riot actually doesn't understand their own game. This item just sucks, because of item balance in general. You can overbuff it until it's too gold efficient and all champions, even some bruisers and assassins will rush it against AD, that's the only thing you can achieve if you only increase the armor of frozen heart in the current state of the game. Maybe people will start playing nidalee top again against AD champions if you just buff frozen heart enough... or Ryze is gonna rush it every game. ... yea what could possibly go wrong?

In general you actually only want 1 armor and 1 MR item for the the time in early/mid game or other situations when you are not targeted by percentage penetration or redecution. Overinvesting in armor/mr is super bad... so is too much mana btw, if you reduced the mana on this and lowered the price maybe at least some supports would get it more often. The aura has more of a supportive nature anyway.

The most reasonable change would be to turn into an armor alternative to item 3001 with item 3010 item 1031 component and only 10% cdr.

On My Kill List1/22/2020, 8:58:38 PM2 votes

all riot has to do is buff the attack speed slow and its radius/range. i believe it used to be larger in the past. buffing frozen hearts armor and cdr won't solve anything and giving it health would just be wrong.

Warmas1/22/2020, 7:31:54 PM2 votes

Effective health is not really the thing that you are looking for as this is a more supportish utility tank item. The big problem why I never built it for example that you spend money on useless mana, sure it helps Ryze and Viktor so it needs it as mages have to be prefered always but useless to tanks. Also it is not really good in a meta where you mentioned true damage is high, but also there are so many stupidly high mobility champs that can reduce the debuffs uptime to nothing while not focusing you, and not a single good player will focus a tank if they have mobility to position for others.

In a world with Sett .... item 3110 is just suicide.
