Is Riven worth learning?

How much time are we looking at to get acceptable results?

These champions did not click with me for whatever reason (found to be too hard to win games with and/or mechanics were too distracting): Ezreal, Zed, Ahri, Kha Zix

Depending on your play style and familiarity with kiting and her skill canceling, it could be considered difficult. Though she is a strong top, despite some of the more unfortunate counters, and can very much carry a game if played appropriately. I suck with her, but I do recommend her if you are interested in doing well with her. If you see the potential, the efforts will be worth it.

She can be as hard as any other champ. She's worth learning due to her flexibility. She has no hard counter (aside from Poppy), is generally reliant on skill and as long as you're a superbly good Riven, can outplay any champion. She's a good carry, has decent survivability and and awesome flash engage to turn those teamfights around. All around, I love her.

And that new skin has me wettttt

She's hard but fun.

Are you looking to climb? To Improve? Or fun?

If you're looking for the first one, then look no further. Annie

Annie was the second champion I used to main, before Ryze. Yes, she's an incredibly strong pick but too situational for long term climbing with these champions on the loose: Velkoz Orianna Galio Lux Syndra. I took her to bronze 1 before I fell.

Took me ~3 months to learn all most important mechanics, another one to perfect the one combo I ever use (doublecast). I still don't really get how kiting works. So... you're looking ~4 months to get results.

Depends on your ELO really but she's fun and pretty worth. I think one of the best parts of her is that she's strong early but has a mid game spike with new item 3812 and item 3071 so if you're behind you can farm it out. Learning animation cancels is hard, and some combos like E into W are easy but kind of gimmicky.

She is really fun but if you're trying to climb rank it's not recommended. I would argue she's mechanically the hardest champion to play. the amount of animation cancelling combos you need to learn is crazy. way harder than figuring out Katarina dagger mechanics or Zed shadow mechanics.

She is an amazing pocket pick though. It's always helpful to be good at the best Teemo counter in top lane.

She's in a better spot right now than she's been in awhile, the item sets favor her and riot gave her some buffs recently to make animation cancelling a valid part of her kit. There's a huge difference between a riven who can E-R-(AA)-(flash)-Q-(AA)-W-AA-Q-AA-Q-AA-R flawlessly and someone who just uses the basic combos. A good riven can do double the damage in half the amount of time.

If you do decide to pick her up this should help a lot https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/3xgbrv/riven_combos_and_animation_canceling_guide/

Ok if you had trouble with said champions then you probably suck at skillshots or something. Even though Riven hasnt got any skillshots or mana, I would argue that animation canceling is a lot harder and more distracting than hitting skillshots so you will need a lot of practice. Of course that same animation canceling makes her really strong, she is currently the best top laner besides Fiora and is usually a strong pick with a potential to 1v5 if enemies dont have much CC, so if they dont counterpick you she is a faceplant champion after a few items and you can mindlessly spam everything and win. But if they take a fuckton of CC you wont be doing much since you have very low utility and you arent tanky at all. Its all situational...

so how do I know if I'm cancelling my Qs properly?

I'm watching the character and I can't tell LOL

auto-Q-left click (then repeat) but what does it look like when done right vs not?

Played a few Normal games with her yesterday, most of them were wins but I dealt VERY little damage to champions and didn't manage to win lanes 1 vs 1 (had to rely on JG ganks and follow ups). I mostly abused her macro game presence.

I mostly played her as a split push champion because I realised I had absolutely RIDICULOUS broken amounts of mobility (it worked very well in disorganised gameplay). The amount of pressure generated on the map is just ridiculous. And if they send people to get me, they have no hope in hell of catching me.

But yeah, actual duelling needs more practice...
