Would you build an item with +/- stats?

I think an interesting design space would be items that offer increased stats compared to other counterparts, in exchange for negative stat modifiers.

For example, a item 1038 gives you +40 AD for 1300 gold. Would you buy a different item that was also 1300 gold, but gave you +50 AD and -15 armor?

That's the simplest example. Essentially, the idea is that these items would have more positive stats than their gold value, but with negative stats to balance it out.

These sorts of items would open up interesting design space and create opportunities to really customize a champion. If you are winning trades, you could opt for the lower armor in exchange for extra AD to push your advantage, or there might be a mage item that offers tons of AP and mana, but at the expense of health or magic resist. Skilled players who understand their matchups would know when to take the "safe" item that gives them a fair amount of the stat they're after, and when to take the risky buy that offers more power.

That's different. It's a unique effect that doesn't have a counterpart, and the stat reduction is both percentile and temporary.

I'm thinking more along the lines of alternate versions of early items. Like, you could build Cloth Armor or Corrupted Cloth Armor. They'd cost the same amount of gold and build into the same things, but the Corrupted Cloth Armor would give you a bit more armor than the regular version or an extra stat at the cost of something else, like attack speed or health regen. Those stats would carry over as you built those things into different items.

It would let players "min-max" their build, building a weakness into their champion in order to accentuate their strengths.

Like + damage reduction, - damage dealt. Or +HP%, - mana%. Or +MS, -ASP.
Or +AP, -CDR.

I dont think items like this would be purchased unless they do a lot - one item i could TOTALLY get behind though is "+a bunch of tank stats with % tank stat amps after xxxxHP" with "You cannot kill enemy champions".

They would definitely need to be tuned so that they're gold efficient, but yeah, the idea is that you have a choice between just increasing your stats, or taking a penalty in one area to have significantly better stats than the "safe" option.

I think that could be pretty interesting, but it could take a while to find a good balance for it. I'm also not sure about implementing it in a way so that it always has the trade off. For instance, maybe it has a unique passive with 20-40 second cooldown that grants you a percent bonus AD or AP for a certain amount of time when you use an ability or damage and enemy champion or something like that. Something that's not got a long cooldown so it's not used much, but something a little bit more intricate than just always applying the trade off. Either way, interesting idea, I hope it goes somewhere.

that is a very interesting idea, but i feel it would just make for OP items on specific champions

In thinking about it I agree, it could make assassins and maybe adcs who build a crap ton of damage be able to one shot a lot easier. It'd have to be very thought out and thoroughly tested before being added

There'd have to be very real tradeoffs. Giving you extra AD at a penalty of AP wouldn't work, because non-AP champions would build that one every time. It would have to be very relevant stats that will impact your gameplay.

I think it's as cool as hard to ballance. Which means very hard. I can imagine for example Xerath with - 20 armor/mr but dealing 10000 damage from his ult/Q.
