Thunderlord's deals approximately the same DPS over 20 seconds as Deathfire
And being able to drop that DPS in two quick bursts over 20 seconds is FAR more practical than trying to stick to someone for 20 seconds constantly applying Deathfire.

TLD: 20-360 + 0.6 bonus AD + 0.2 AP (2 applications of TLD in a 20 second window)
DFT: 41 ticks (1 tick every half-second over 20 seconds). Each tick is 1 + 0.0625 bonus AD + 0.025 AP 41 + 2.5625 bonus AD + 1.025 AP
Same DPS, eh?
MATH
Be that as it may, Thunderlord requires a more dedicated engage than Deathfire. In Team Fights, it is imperitive that you utilize it on a focused target or you risk wasting it. Additionally, champions that would benefit more from the Ferocity Tree than the Cunning Tree lose some of their potential when equipped with Thunderlord.

Lux has guranteed thunderlord procs. EAA.
12/18/0 almost gives you the same things as 18/12/0.
With 18 in Cunning, however, you get the superior penetration mastery (both kinds of penetration, and Precision is more powerful if the target has less than 79-200 Armor (after LW) / 47-120 MR (after VS)).

You don't really lose anything from going into Cunning. The flat pen masteries, especially since the armor pen buff, are just way better than the % pen ones. The only thing you're missing out on is the keystones in ferocity and if Thunderlord's is better than any of those options, you lose nothing.
Well after the DFT nerf, Thunderlord is literally the best mastery in the game. If you're not a tank, Nami, Janna, and you're not taking Thunderlord's you're doing it wrong.
swap places then
I'm so sick of this stupid shit. https://www.dropbox.com/s/jxc5ezvdqc9basz/Masteries.xlsx?dl=0
Chance the values of the cells in blue. You'll find that DLC is absolute shit.
Deathfire scales wa better into late with superior ratios(if you can apply it frequently) and works better vs multiple enemies. Thunderlords is better early-mid with the big basedamage, but deals less damage late and is worse vs multiple targets, as it procs just once in a small aoe.
With games beeing decided so early, the earlygame options simply is dominant, and aditionally the flat pen and cdr both are better options than the %pen that you get with dft. The problem that masterie's are still split into tree's, so you not only choose between key-stones, but also the stats alinged to the tree. So as long as the flat pen stays superior to the %pen, thunderlords will be dominant.
That beeing said, i do think dft could use some changes. It's way to weak on aoe spells, which most casters rely on, and the pure scaleing damage makes it pretty snowbally and limited to mostly carry type champions, as it's really lackluster if you can't back it up with alot ap/ad I think the damage should be adjusted to work more smimilar to thunderlords, haveing a basedamage that scales with lvl and some ad/ap scaleings, and it should last 3sec on aoe skills. That would make it attractive for way more champions and the damage would be that directly bound to your gold.
