When does an ADC need to split? When does the support need to help split?

Dear Riot and fellow Summoners:

I understand that the top laner can split a lot, and make great use of it...

but WHEN does the adc need to split, and how far down the lane?

When should the support split with the adc? and when should the support not be there and join the team instead?

Thanks,

Box.

You maximise farm whenever it is safe to do so. If there are waves of minions that are safe to collect on the side, go and collect... gaining gold, exp, and generating minion pressure against the enemy.

If you are hitting an ennemy tower and you can safely keep hitting it... ignore your team even if they get caught in some fiesta fights.

Always go to the place on the map where its guaranteed to generate the most pressure and earn you the most gold and exp.

If there are no ennemy minions on the map though/or no enemies visible on the map... its rarely ever the correct decision to Split from your team.

Hi Lannister Gold.

I see my adc splitting what i believe to be too much. He's bot lane almost at river and the team is fighting without him, losing. This is something i am seeing repeatedly.

I am a support and dont know where to be, because if im with the team we die without the adc, and if im with the adc, he gets ganked and dies and i die with him. :P

Any suggestions, guys?

I believe that it is best, in Solo Q and in coordinated... for the ADC to stay bot and keep farming as long as realistically possible (without dying). If there is a good fight in the river, the ADC should consider joining but the vast majority of early to mid game, the ADC should be Bot farming. It's a "race" to 3 items... the first ADC to get there gains a HUGE advantage for the team. From time to time, the ADC can briefly "rotate" to Mid but he should always keep an eye on Bot and return there to Collect. Basically, Bot Lane is like his HQ. If he's sent on any missions elsewhere he must always be ready to return to collect farm.

An ADC that hits 3 items and has a level advantage (from the Solo collecting) who gets there very fast and who knows how to play that phase of the game brings his team a massive advantage; often a decisive one. EXP is huge on ADCs. They can fight people while 1 level behind but when on even or higher EXP they can often stat check enemies into oblivion.

The Team should avoid fighting without the ADC and since the ADC is in Bot a lot, they should avoid fighting in general unless they make a Pick. Ideally the first half of the game should be people in different lanes, always managing the minions and pressuring. Opportunistically grouping only after certain enemies are picked off.

There's rarely a reason to go, "Let's group as 5" in the early game when you could instead drag it out with the ADC power farming in Bot (assuming he won lane), and launch tentative skirmishes and Picks across the map with the remaining team.

Grouping as 5 is no guarantee anything will be done and the map's EXP and Gold won't be as efficiently collected. The team's formation should always be that which guarantees maximum safe collection of EXP and Gold (and in the early game, that usually means being in separate groups, with several solo farmers, only grouping here and there to take a few convenient towers after Picks are made).

...

If the ADC is close to tower power farming and the ennemy Duo is "grouped," it is usually best to stick with the team instead of the ADC as the ADC should be safe.

However, be very very wary of bad fights.

If its coordinated 5 v 5 you can simply re-tool the strategy and engage around picks (avoiding fights otherwise)... if its a Solo Q scenario and your team insists on fighting... you should do you best to discourage them from doing so.

Perhaps go with your ADC to send the message, "hey MAYBE there's no reason to fight."

Short answer is never. Splitting implies that you're split pushing, which means your team is elsewhere and the enemy team is alive. If you know the enemy team can't get to you or engage on your team and a side wave is pushing towards you, sure, go grab it, but that's different.

The ADC can't stay alive without the support's help, so either the ADC is going to die alone or there are 2 champs required for a teamfight sitting in a side lane. It's lose-lose.

If the ADC can survive alone, that means they're fed, which means you definitely want to be trying to teamfight anyway, so they shouldn't be splitting.

Usually when there is a standoff in mid or top lane, the support making a rotation to help defend / pressure is very useful. Because the support has a lot of threat projection due to the amount of CC (when coupled with the mid / top laner who will have the damage back-pu) and can prevent dives from happening. The general strategy here, from the support's standpoint, is to keep the mid safe while he wave clears, and help with wave clear.

A lot of time the ADC is completely redundant in this situation. The support or support alone can protect against pressure from both both laners, with the addition of jungle and top if the pressure extends.

If all the threats are pinned to mid lane without getting anything useful done, instead of the ADC coming to mid lane and sharing not getting any farm, can stay alone in lane and hard shove.
