How do Europeans deal with the Language barrier in league

Rewt·12/27/2019, 8:52:20 PM·14 votes·10,307 views

Like I get the whole "Just Ping 4Head" Thing but like.

on NA there is a kind of meme about players from Spanish/Portuguese speaking countries when they play on NA. They Either silently carry the game and never type anything. Or they int feed and spam chat in a language you don't understand. Also You can't really give item build advice or ask them to do something specific because you don't speak the same language.

Is there a parallel in EUW/NE of this? or does Europe handle things differently?

We type in English? You will usually find that alot of continental western Europeans will speak english fairly well. The only ones that generally dont type in English unless they flame you are from Turkey.

WTBeGirl100EUhr12/28/2019, 12:07:07 PM8 votes

Almost everyone in Europe speaks english

Ehhhh12/27/2019, 8:56:23 PM6 votes

Yeah, it's handled differently. Mainly just racist remarks and then crying that they were banned for it, because its totally not their fault, and saying they should all learn English or get their own server

Beerstein12/28/2019, 12:47:08 AM5 votes

I have played all 3 servers (EUs and NA) and tbh everyone mostly speaks English. Actually a shocking amount of racism comes out in EU when someone doesn't.

Whenever someone gets upset with me there I just ask if anyone speaks Turkish and watch the racism fly, then report them at the end for racism. That said, they don't actually ban for racism in EU (which arguably would empty out the servers entirely)

Edit: Just saw this post above "Death by Glamour (EUW) - about 4 hours ago We type in English? You will usually find that alot of continental western Europeans will speak english fairly well. The only ones that generally dont type in English unless they flame you are from Turkey."

lol

I also see quite a bit of German there, but did a lot of premades with Germans so it's possible it pops out more often with them.

Fun Fact: When I asked if anyone spoke Turkish once I got flamed all game for my English and was told to go back to school and learn to speak English properly. This was coming from people with broken English xD

CyberPhobic12/28/2019, 2:53:46 AM4 votes

Well theres alot of polish people and the way people handle it.... they dont? They just flame them for being polish

Legit anytime someone feeds youll hear 'ah 1/7 katarina polish toilet cleaner', which is weird because the one flaming will usually be 0/1/0 at 20 min ammumu jg going full ap that fed their mid double buff

Meritas12/28/2019, 12:27:39 AM3 votes

Somehow every single player across both European servers knows English well enough to flame you when it comes to that.

Most games, everyone either talks English or people utilize pings. There are the off-games where some premades start talking in their language. Sometimes, that is left alone, but sometimes, someone else on the team feels like replying to that with some stereotype-kinda remarks or maybe even xenophobic remarks. Let me give you a few examples: For French, people reply with stuff like "oui oui baguette". For Germans, people reply with stuff like "SAUERKRAUT" or "WURST". The rest, I don't know. I don't pay thaaaat much attention to it on the off-chance it happens xD But well, yeah, there obviously are stereotypes. Some people say stuff like that there should be a separate French server or a separate Polish server, because they're "so bad and never talk English". Let me give you a few examples, there are actually posts of this on the Boards, maybe they'll give you a better picture: https://boards.euw.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/player-behaviour-en/O1VkiJqz-own-server-for-the-french https://boards.euw.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/player-behaviour-en/6emLNB76-french-server https://boards.euw.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/player-behaviour-en/z9MTWq9w-polish-server-in-eune However, in my experience at least, this all happens very rarely. So while I don't play ranked, I sincerely doubt it affects it in any way, and communication should still mostly be fine with pings. You can communicate a lot with pings these days.

What an ignorant and racist post. Did you honestly assume English is only spoken in England, America and Australia?

Sylaelque12/27/2019, 9:25:10 PM2 votes

I'm asking them to speak English politely so if they reject this, I'm just going to mute them for not getting annoyed by their regional language. I saw Italian, Spanish, French, German, Czech, Dutch, Turkish, some North Africa countries in EUW, a few players from UK but majority is French as I see and they don't know English so well.

Arammus12/27/2019, 9:18:54 PM2 votes

most people go for english. once someone gets mad they usually flame in their mother tongue. to me thats not much difference than flaming in english. i just mute.

still french is an ugly language sorry.

JackMcCarry12/28/2019, 12:12:16 PM2 votes

Speak in english, until one of your team mates gets mad, then you're bombarded with the "kurwa" and polish (at least in my experience)

Hi im 1212/28/2019, 3:10:39 PM1 votes

people actin like the chat is used to convey information lmao

DragonArt12/28/2019, 7:17:01 PM1 votes

He he

Almost all people knows some English.

People only use his own language for ... (not positive things). Also, the ping system has the same function.

When the game is going bad, in EUW you can easily recognize:

  • spanish
  • french
  • neapolitan people

Well, as for the portuguese, brazilian players are Just Like That™, and thats why Riot quarintined BR server away from LAS/LAN servers. Its partly why the LAS Overwatch center was eventually removed, because Blizzard refused to do the same and the entire continent had to deal with toxic brazilians that refused to communicate, and people just stopped playing.

Magical Poop12/29/2019, 7:04:16 AM1 votes

EU NE it rarely happens that somebody doesn't even know english. they will just talk in that famous primitive version english but it's still understandable sometimes somebody will translate what he said in that language.

I3Iame12/29/2019, 8:07:40 AM1 votes

People just speak English on the EUW server. Gaming vocab is usually pretty straightforward and basic. Either you're talking about a spell (QWER / ult), map element, or insulting someone.

Clockwork Mouse12/29/2019, 9:09:13 PM1 votes

[slayer-pantheon-thumbs] Flame them for not speaking English. They came to your countries, they should learn how to speak

Velzard of Koz12/27/2019, 11:26:58 PM1 votes

There isn't parallel of that in EUNE that's the entire identity of EUNE. You won't get through single game without at least one person spamming chat with something you don't understand and it only gets better once they start using numbers in words.

On more serious note, surprisingly decent amount of people at least speak communicative enough game dictionary english, so majority of time If they refuse to cooperate it's by the "Shut up I am da best and I deserve challenjour" rather than not understanding the language.

KFCeytron12/28/2019, 2:11:47 AM1 votes

This is an interesting thread. I've never taken the time to consider how some LoL regions combine several disparate countries, each with their own language. Reading the replies about how English is usually used, I'm reminded of a story from my parents about one of their trips to Germany. They needed directions or something, so they asked a bus driver whether he spoke English. He looked at them like they were crazy and told them that of course he did. Apparently, everyone in western Europe speaks their country's native/official language for conversation with other locals and English for everything else.

the whole BR thing is more than just a meme--it's a phenomenon that dates back to the golden era of online-gaming where Brazilian players would flock to, in particular, private-servers for NA-populated MMO's that didn't charge a monthly subscription-fee (which was the monetization-norm of the time)......if a game did not cost anything, the BRs would be there

beyond the racist diatribe about people who don't live in the USA not having money to spend on vidya, Brazilian gamers DID actually show up on these servers en-masse and would usually make a coordinated effort to form guilds or clans and pubstomp the shit out of whatever PvP or GvG content said server had to offer......or, they would flame other guilds/clans to no end if they didnt. regardless of either outcome, one could be certain that they would receive an abundance of jajajajajajajajaja's, huehuehuehue's and XD's. Brazilian MMO players will go down in the annuls of gaming-history for their unmatched competitive and vindictive nature

Before I say anything : I'm Arab, so what I say here is not racism towards anyone We have the same thing in EUW, Arabs who speak their language which got numbers. This type of people are the most cancerous ones in existence. They don't talk at all, they play Yasuo/Zed/Vayne/Master Yi/Darius/Kai'Sa mostly. And when they die, its the support and the jungler's fault. Most of them get banned because they don't even flame normally, boi they can wish you watch your dog burning without you being able to do anything. PS : They flame in English but none understand them "fk mathar" so they switch to Arab "ksmk"

Smyrage12/28/2019, 8:27:40 AM1 votes

Ironically as I saw the language barrier is stronger in EUW, which consist of the major languages, such as English, French, Spanish, German, because e.g french people are reluctant to speak english or german for example. In EUNE people are more likely to speak English, even if it is gibberish, because of the language diversity. Of course people will talk in their own language, but mostly about stuff unrelated to the game. I find it rather nice to be honest, because after a while you start picking up their language and you will actually understand them. Usually in the EUNE it is mostly the polish people, who prefer their own language over english, but it's not even close to be that bad as in the case of the french. Also polish is easier to pick up than french. Furthermore most of the languages are slavic, so e.g if you start picking up czech you also get to understand slovakian, because of the similarity. Same is true for the balkans. The only problematic languages are romanian, hungarian and finnish etc., which don't really have any similar pair and are relatively harder to pick up. Especially hungarian (I'm a hungarian btw, our language is so hard that even native hungarians can't speak it properly for most part).

Azurereaper12/28/2019, 10:46:16 AM1 votes

There's a thing called mute allied chat, that should remain on as a requirement.

14daysuspensionk12/28/2019, 11:08:54 AM1 votes

Most people in my region are polish or romanian and since I'm not from one of the big countries in Europe it's often hard to understand them. But they do speak English.

Sir Saltarin12/28/2019, 11:25:55 AM1 votes

I'm from Spain and my english is fine.

King Lego12/28/2019, 11:51:56 AM1 votes

I've had my fair share of a different language barrier but on a positive sidenote, I've learned a few words. But sometimes I get 2 teammates (or 3) who are pre and happen to speak Arabic (but in Egyptian dialect) and for the most part they expect to be the only ones speaking it and are all camouflaged and all (which I am also guilty of to be honest).

However for my condition, I can use both EUW and EUNE since both have acceptable pings.

A1laku12/28/2019, 12:04:30 PM1 votes

As far I'm concerned there is no language barrier, once in a blue moon they'll decide to use their 1st language when playing amongst themselves. Also, if you put me among spanish players I'll probably know more spanish then some of them will know english so again no problems there for me personally, with portugese is a bit harder but it's also super similar with spanish so I'll probably understand most of what they're saying but I'll completely butcher their language if I try to reply back lol.
