How does team matchmaking work?

So, I've got a ranked 3's team that I've been playing with for a little over half of a year. That being said, we've been getting heavily unfavored matchups this season during our Silver -> Gold promotional series. We have just gone into our second attempt at it, and the teams that we are getting matched against are polar opposites. We either stomp the other team extremely hard, or we get stomped hard. However, there is a trend that we've pick up on.

3/4 of our losses have come from teams with at least one Plat/Diamond solo que player, usually backed by either more plat players or high gold. These teams are also in their placements. All of our wins have come from similarly ranked teams to ours, with similar solo que ranks.

So what is the determining factor in team matchmaking? Is there a collective team MMR?

Short answer is yes, your ranked team has an MMR of its own.

Well, and this could be very biased... I think it would be good to disable matches between players in promotionals and placements. Because 50% of the time we've had a placement team, they've completely stomped us. The other 50% they were moderately close and we lost out in the late game.
