As a Garen main, I'm just stumped.
I thought the idea was to promote strategic diversity in how we play depending on the situation in the current game, but removing items and narrowing the choices of items doesn't help that it only lessens it. There really is no excuse to take the items (but for this I'm gonna use Atma's impaler) out of the game because there really isn't a reason too.
A bigger pool of 50 items is better then just a pool of 15 items to pick. Because there honestly is no reason to remove it, the item shop code knows no different to the limits of how many items it can sell.
And players aren't being forced to buy if they don't want to, wasn't that the whole point of the item shop? Being able to buy what you need to tailor to the situation in accordance to what champion you're playing?
There is also a misconception to how you look at Atma's Impaler currently as an item.
in the past yeah, tanky dps champions probably did abuse it back in its hayday with the metagolem build. But with that nerfed, you have to change the way you look at it and instead look to as what are the reasons you would want it.
I'll explain.
Why do people buy death cap and how do they do they value their item buying? And how does that compare to Atma's Impaler?
- Death Cap and Atma's both have passives
- Death Cap is valued on based by what its passive does, because it amplifies their AP by a percentage
- So therefor, Atma's should be valued on its passive?
NO
Why?
Atma's passive may give you AD based on your HP but you shouldn't really be thinking it as the sole reason and value to why you would buy it.
It has to be looked at as more of as the icing on the top of what you're paying for a combination of stats you need in one item. I.E. Sunfire Cape and randuins omen for getting Armor and HP in one slot. Banshee's and Spirit Visage for MR and HP in one item. Blade of the Ruined King for Damage + Lifesteal in one or Lifesteal + attack speed in one (depending what champion you are and what that champion values more to their item build).
Everything else the item brings once you got what you were seeking is just icing on the cake.
So what does Atma's do without the passive? The only item that has Armor + Crit.
That may not look much, but it still helps to have an item that can atleast get some middle ground between the two stats into one item.
Devil's advocate here, I don't want to see ranged AD champions buying it as I think it should still be reserved for the off tanks of old to make more use of.
But I will agree the old Atma's passive has got to go, because yes I can see it being a nightmare to balance since Riot doesn't want repeats of the S1/S2 meta golem yeah?
So instead give Atma's something of a passive like:
- Every xx amount of armor you have you get a scaling percent or flat amount of HP (as icing on the top passive method) and then give higher item base stats when its combined (Armor and Crit)
or
- For every xx amount of HP you get have (on a scale) you get additional bonus armor and get some extra small 1% increments of critical chance (and maybe you can include a long sword or something so it only has item base AD so it doesn't feel left out to people trying to find another AD item in the fighter category)
That way only fighters can really benefit from the item purchase.
