especially when you can directly look at other champions like anivia, for example, who both sports a higher winrate AND playrate, and has done so for pretty damn long, or ahri, who took several seasons to get nerfed, and is STILL doing better, considering her massive playrate over malz.

He was overtuned and it's so obvious to. His changes were added late to the PBE and didn't get enough testing, he was simply disgustingly overtuned.

Mages in general are too strong. They kill people way too fast, and tanks still get bursted too hard by them DESPITE having 3 MR items. If anything, they should just blanket nerf the mage items and leave Malz alone
