A quick look at Scrying Orb since its tweak
Just wanted to throw this discussion out there since the topic seems to have been overlooked since the Blue Trinket upgrade had a ward attached to its cast back in 5.3.
First off, what is the blue trinket used for?
The Scrying Orb is most commonly picked up on the ADC role as opposed to a sweeper
or warding trinket upgrade
. Before upgrading, the trinket can scout up to 2500 units away, and up to a whopping 4000 units upgraded. Champions in the target area are also revealed for 2 seconds.
Typically used to scout objectives, such as Dragon, Baron, or Jungle buffs, it is also fairly common to scout brush in areas where there are no friendly wards, allowing safe travels and avoiding "death brush" situations. The upgraded version was given a little something extra in 5.3; a visible ward drop on cast with 1 HP that lasts 1 minute. When destroyed, the ward yields 15 gold.
The little upgrade to Farsight Orb
was also accompanied by a Greater Stealth Totem
buff as well in 5.3, where the trinket allowed wards to charge stacks up to 2. That made this upgrade incredibly cost efficient!
I loved playing around with the new upgraded Farsight Orb, able to lay down some quick vision in the enemy jungle at key moments... maybe finding a champion in the process.
This is just a personal observation, but I have noticed that very few people upgrade the Scrying Orb to Farsight Orb at all anymore, despite the major range increase of the upgrade... my question is why?
I feel like the most obvious answer is that the ward it drops gives the enemy team gold. Albeit, it is only 15, however that's basically 1 CS. Players that are still purchasing the Scrying Orb are opting out of the upgrade and simply repositioning themselves to effectively use the 2500 range, and not need the additional 1500 range from the upgrade, simply because the upgrade gives gold.
Just going to jump the my suggestion at this point. The fact that the ward is visible and has only 1 HP should mean that destroying it should yield less of a reward compared to a regular ward, and for that matter a trinket ward, shouldn't it? Trinket wards yield 20 gold at the moment, have 3 HP and are stealthed. Regular wards yield 30 gold and are stealthed. I'm leaning towards the idea that the blue ward should yield only 5 gold, simply because it's much more fragile, and is visible. It requires no effort to locate (outside of maybe checking in brush) nor destroy, why is the reward so high?
Perhaps if the reward for it was lowered, players might be more inclined to upgrade it.
Edit 1: One thing I would like to remain in focus here is the idea that the new ward drop is actually discouraging players from upgrading the trinket! That doesn't make any sense!
Edit 2: Valkyrie Witch had an interesting idea:
I think a better buff would be for it to create the same type of "will o' the wisp" that Smiting a Wolf creates... ...Not the range of an entire jungle, maybe the full radius of a Pink Ward, for a short[er] amount of time.
