How the pause request work?

Ok so today in a series game I start off with a dc, cait was afk. I was scare at the time, I mean common it a huge series; who wouldn't ? since we have an afk I decide to do the thing in costume game; the pause.
were you type "/pause" it said requesting pause have been send or some sort, so does the opponents have to accept the request in other to pause the game? and is rank game pause able?
