The State of top lane post worlds: what I expect it to look like
This is largley what I expect things to look like after worlds end and people will shift their focus of perspective on balance from 5.18 to what we are actually on now. What I mean is, balance changes have taken place already that would impact worlds picks/bans if they were on 5.20 imo. As an example, I doubt Darius will be such a highly contested pick now.
Currently, this is what I view as the best group of top laners as of 5.20:
Fiora: she still needs nerfs. Nothing too huge because base stat nerfs are a good place to start. I think the best place to hit her now is to leave her damage be, it's a big part of her identify. But for the love of God, give her actual mana costs.
Gangplank: still might need slight nerfs, I'm not sure. His ult probably needs nerfs the most, shits crazy
Mundo: that E buff was enormous. He's also the safest top laner in the game and has access to deadmans plate + his new E. Mundo 3 shots you as he pleases
Renekton: it's amazing how people don't realize how good he is with BC yet. He actually has a late game now.
Gnar: never really a bad pick. Kinda the jack of all trades here, good in almost any como because of mega gnar.
Olaf: pretty low on this list, but as strong as he is; he's extremely comp dependent and linear. I think that's the perfect balancing point for Olaf, who admittedly is one of the hardest champions in the game to balance.
Under the radar picks: Jax: he's been buffed a ton he last few months
Trundle: bruiser items are great on him too
Malphite presses R. Never really bad but the recent buffs have made him more than an R masher
Irelia: it's weird to say she's under the radar since she's basically always good but she's been overshadowed lately
Overrated top laners:
Hecarim: I honestly don't know why people play him anymore when so many other bruisers are way better. When bruisers were strong in s2, Hecarim was not a good top laner because bruisers can destroy him with ease. He's extremely item dependent. He has a hard time getting those items.
Yasuo: this will make people scream and call me crazy but remember, yasuo only became a top lane pick because of him being a Gnar counter. He can combat bruisers very early before they get levels and stats but once they do, they dumpster him. I think he's a much better mid laner unless you're using him to counter pick certain top laners.
Riven: there's no denying she's obnoxious. She's got a set of nerfs on pbe and while I think they are aimed at the wrong things, the reality is Riven is largley more valuable as a solo queue pick than anything competitive. She's overrated in competitive play but probably in the top tier solo queue list. She might not belong here. She's certainly not weak but given her hype and polarizing center of discussion, I just don't think she's all she's cracked up to be. Like I said, I think the best way to describe her is obnoxious.
Darius: I think Darius is still good but these nerfs were pretty damn big. I think people will realize how hard they hit him once they gain the perspective of seeing him played post 5.18, from a solo queue stand point alone, reliably analyzing a champion like Darius is tough.
Keep in mind, the marksmen rework could impact some top laners, most notably gangplank. This could also effect who becomes more in-demand depending on their skill set and how the marksmen rework impacts the game. But as of now, this is kind of what I see as the state of the game and what you should expect.
Also, this doesn't change a darn thing if you main somethig not mentioned. At the end of the day, play what you're good at and enjoy. This is simply a tier list based more on competitive and for those who have champ pools that fluctuate on what's meta.
