The State of Nidalee (super minion after 25 minutes)

Hey there,

My name is Mid Nidalee, also known as WTCL Taylor and AVA Wildy throughout the years. I have been playing League of Legends and specifically maining Nidalee since Season 2. During Season 3, I played 546 games of Mid Nidalee at 61% win-rate. Back then my summoner name was Best Mid Nidalee. I peaked at Diamond 3 during Season 4. I have played Nidalee in every role league has to offer and no other champion has given the same excitement to play.

Screenshot of playing Mid Nidalee with Regi and Steve back in Season 5. https://i.gyazo.com/b0774d8dae8ae030c64bd7158b887485.jpg https://i.gyazo.com/d91bc6d20fb7d7a8ddf43051dcd2a0d5.png

Over the years, we have seen many changes to Nidalee, mostly nerfs. The rework of patch 4.10 was a game-changer, sure, but I wasn’t about to give up on my favorite champion.

Before the re-work, Nidalee’s playstyle was playing without pressure and awaiting level 6 to gain access to cougar form. You had a disadvantage in nearly every lane matchup because you could be shoved nonstop to your tower. However, upon reaching level 6, you gained some waveclear, mobility, and tankiness. Nidalee was different from Jayce and Elise in that regard (and different is okay, usually good!). Nidalee could chunk a player out of a fight with a spear if a player mispositioned and was hit by one of long range.

Come patch 4.10, the Nidalee rework hit live and we got a new passive, cougar transformation at level 1, among other changes. Of course with champion changes, there are usually some balance changes that happen down the road. With this version of Nidalee on 4.10, AD Nidalee was strong, and AP Nidalee was weaker than before. The balance was worked out, and Nidalee was playable in both roles for around a year despite being a lower skill-cap champion than before.

Come 5.1, Nidalee was a lot closer to balanced with a Mid win rate of 49.74%, Top at 49.81%, and Jungle 49.83%. Honestly, the rework might’ve been slightly over-tuned because she was a high-skill cap champion with a 50% win-rate, but I digress.

Come Patch 5.2, Nidalee was given the change of “Passive - Prowl (NEW) LITERAL DEFINITION Nidalee can now also Hunt neutral monsters” which completely broke her. Her jungle win-rate spiked to almost 56%.

Post 5.2, through 6.21 Nidalee has received 15 nerfs and 1 buff resulting in Mid Nidalee and Top Nidalee being completely dead. That being said, jungle Nidalee is not in a healthy spot either in terms of gameplay. A feast or famine champion, Nidalee now has to rely on getting a significant lead in order to impact the game in any way, and even then, if she is not able to do anything with a lead, the champion becomes useless for the most part.

While one could argue that snowballing and closing out games quickly is the difference between a good and a poor Nidalee player, I highly disagree, seeing that many other feast or famine champions (like Rengar, for example), have very toxic gameplay elements that resulted in champions getting changed nonstop until Riot had forced a revert of some kind. Being able to close a large distance directly to the hunted target with Nidalee, while may feel fun when done right, isn’t healthy and has no counterplay outside of “don’t get hit by the spear/trap”. I hate to say this, but there is no skill involved in this ability other than making sure where you jump to isn’t an instant death, and that is a MAJOR problem. As we all probably know by now, Riot likes to work with champion “power budgets”. Allocating all of Nidalee’s ability to kill a target with an execute ability which the player cannot miss due to being an auto attack is bad design. This ability is set up by the overpowered pounce that puts you into position to execute the target with no skill due to the range/target locking of the pounce. Sure, ensuring you have the mark on the target can require some degree of skill, but the execution of it should not be as simple as it should be.

I’m of the belief that the Hunt Passive should be removed from Nidalee’s kit as to allow for more power to be allocated to her kit elsewhere such as her base ad, ap ratios, or even other ability base damages. Currently, Nidalee gains a massive damage increase with her Cougar Q ability, a movement speed increase, and the previously mentioned massive gap close with the Hunt. Additionally, this would allow for Nidalee to be a much higher skill-cap champion forcing you to land multiple spears rather than just the 1 spear into full cougar combo death we see happen for nearly every kill Nidalee obtains in a game. There is no variation in how Nidalee kills her targets as of current, which I feel is a major problem for this kit, considering past iterations allowed for a lot more variety and out-playability in my personal opinion.

That being said, Nidalee has both a lot of upsides and downsides in her current form. These are what I immediately think of, but of course I am sure there are many things in both categories that I have missed.

PROS:

  • Spear moving slower than original speed allows for more counterplay.

  • No longer moving backward for more damage after spear is thrown.

  • Traps are improved; They used to be slightly visible, but lasted a lot longer, had no health bar, and did more damage. You have real counter play against the current traps with vision control and the health bar.

  • The current state of Items (Rod of Ages, Athenes, Lich Bane, Ludens, Trinity Force, BOTRK, etc) gives the player a lot of flexibility on how they want to play Nidalee.

  • Nidalee combos are still present and are a lot of fun.

  • Animation Canceling still being present in her kit.

  • Pounce cooldown lowering on kill is fun and a rewarding skill for wave manipulation and jungle clear.

  • Auto attack reset being removed by switching forms made melee matchups more fair top lane.

CONS:

  • Hunt Passive on Jungle camps makes Lane Nidalee impossible to be viable without breaking Jungle Nidalee.

  • Closing the gap on a target with the Hunt requires no skill or pathing strategy

  • Pouncing in the direction that your mouse is facing instead of the direction Nidalee is facing causes you to make additional mouse movement while kiting enemies back and also looks really bad visually when you pounce in a completely different direction than the direction you were facing. There was once a skill in turning Nidalee into the direction of a pounce, and it was rewarding and no longer is fulfilled.

  • Missing Health Heal instead of a flat Heal makes laning Nidalee difficult. (Not to say heavy amounts of sustain in a kit is good, but making an ability useless isn’t good either).

  • Too much damage is loaded into Cougar Q versus targets with “Hunt mark”. It needs to be distributed around her kit.

  • Cougars are faster than people, Nidalee no longer gaining movement speed in cougar feels wrong thematically and the Hunt gives too much movement speed currently.

  • Current spear hitbox has been nerfed and does not accurately represent the model of the spear flying through the air. This is a problem with other champions such as Morgana’s Q or Lux’s R. Riot has fixed Blitzcrank Q as of recent.

  • The rework reallocated too much damage from Nidalee’s Spear (Q1) into her Cougar auto reset (Q2) and also made it an execute. Doing so resulted in damage being a bit too high from the cougar Q. This resulted in Q1 not feeling as satisfying landing it from long ranges, while Q2 seems much too strong and at times overkilling opponents. Killing enemy carries at 60% hp with simply Q2 and Hunt passive is much too strong. It’s nonsensical and not fair in terms of counterplay.

I would like to invite all Nidalee players to add me on North America “Mid Nidalee” to join my club and the discussion and to also have discussion on this post, and reddit. I believe that the more we talk about the problems Nidalee has, the more likely Nidalee will return to Summoner’s Rift in a healthy state across many roles as she once did before. I believe there is a middle ground for Nidalee where she is viable across 3 roles, without losing counter-play or ruining enjoyment from not only the people playing with and against her in the game, but also those that still enjoy playing Nidalee as of current. Riot has in the past gone back and reverted champions when the community decided it was needed. We can do it again, make the revert happen, like Kog’maw, Rengar, Leblanc, Fizz, and the upcoming Zac.

TLDR; We need to revert some of the Nidalee rework and reallocate some of Nidalee’s power in other ways. Remove the Hunt passive, change Pounce to jump toward where Nidalee faces, Give cougar MS. Nidalee needs more variation in how she picks up kills instead of just cougar comboing enemies who are marked with Hunt passive. Spear hitbox needs to match the spear, less snowballing, and more scaling.

Here are some of links I used to base my argument on. You can see what some of the community has been thinking about in regards to Nidalee. https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/5d3vhd/the_nidalee_rework_itself_was_great_all_of_her/ https://www.reddit.com/r/NidaleeMains/comments/8dd6wy/does_nidalee_deserve_a_buff/ https://www.reddit.com/r/NidaleeMains/comments/9afo07/lets_remember_all_of_the_aspects_of_nidalee_that/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGGal7atkMQ

I'm not really a Nidalee fan but..upvote for effort. You clearly care about this champion, hope you get a red response man.

Riot please do something soon. The lane nidalee community just wants to enjoy playing their favorite champion again. We have been giving so much feedback for years since 5.2. We've had so many suggestions recently to help fix her. PLEASE I beg you please do something for her so she can lane again. Nidalee used to be so much fun with so many choices and different play styles and now she is locked into a single role it sucks it just really really sucks that we can't enjoy this champion anymore.

There must be somebody on the balance or champion team that can put in the time to fix her. Please come and openly discus with us so this champion can be amazing again. And thank you to any rioters that actually read anything we have talked about in the past few months.

Cool thread, you should repost it on Reddit since that's where Riot is most active. If you hit front page you have way higher chances of being seen by Riot than here where only 1 or 2 Rioters sometimes visit.

I'll be honest with you, i think that nidalee Q nerf was total bullshit when they made Zoe after that. At first their excuse was that one ability shouldn't be able to one-shot people and the playerbase complained because of how good she was as a jungler, you can't really play/watch for her Q if it comes out of the bushes or sides when you don't expect it.

Zoe E-Q deals even more damage then nidalee Q back in the day, only problem is that Zoe needs to land a bubble but in the laning phase it doesn't really make a difference as no one can block the Q after the sleepy trouble bubble. The problem is, nidalee used to fall off in late game while Zoe is strong though the whole game. So why don't they bring back the Q ap scalings?

I really loved playing nidalee jungle, it felt so satisfying to take over the game. No other champion comes even close to being able to dominate in jungle as hard as her but only good players could play her.

I guess most of the players want her in mid but with the Q ap scalings, she'd be viable in lane and jungle.

I feel you, man.

Shyvana Not only have I changed lanes, but I’ve completely changed builds and playstyles as well...

Other examples - Galio Karma MonkeyKing Brand

In the end, I’m not exactly sure these are inherently bad changes. They’re just upsetting for mains, especially when skill requirements are lowered. Maybe Riot will eventually get around to adding back some lost skill expression, like with Ornn.

I miss mid nid. Played her a lot pre-rework.

This is why I keep saying when Rito asks that, despite my enjoyment of the game, I will no longer recommend League of Legends to others. It always goes badly and I get blamed for wasting friends' time.

Rito just keeps adding pointlessly toxic mechanics like these to complicate the game for apparently nothing but complexity's sake. Everybody I got to play League of Legends ended up quitting soon after. Not only are these kinds of unnecessary complexity toxic, but they also makes it extremely taxing to learn the game by playing it. If I didn't look up Nidalee in an encyclopedia-wiki, then I couldn't even guess how the frog the champion's signature power budget buy worked by seeing it in action against me. If you haven't been here incrementally reading patch notes for years absorbing all the nonsense Rito has been cramming into the game, then to learn this game is more like getting an associate degree in paralegal studies than having a few evenings' fun with friends.

If Rito is serious about growing this game beyond its long-time player base, then they really need to revert these kinds of reworks and stop making these kinds of reworks in the future.

The old Nidalee was a simple but elegant beast of a design; the new Nidalee became a niche one-trick.

I used to enjoy lane Nid back in the day of the rework (Didn't like old spearbot Nid, but rework was great). I haven't really enjoyed her jungling though. Riot has a big job to do if they wanna bring her into a healthy state though.

Big props for sticking with your main for all this time, despite mountains of bullshit. I've been a Rek'Sai main since her release, so I know your pain. All power to ya man!

While I would like to be able to play Midalee, I would like to remind you, DoRito has no problem forcing a champ into one specific lane, so you might not be able to convince them to do anything. Also, with the current way spear works, I don't know if Nidalee could ever be really good in midlane. I almost can't think of a single midlaner who's main harassing tool is a slow-ish skillshot that is blocked by the first minion hit. The closest champs I can think of are Jayce, who has a potentially VERY FAST skillshot, with AOE, and Lux, who's skillshot is faster, hits 2 units, an she can also harass with E.

Ey I also main her.

How would you feel if Nidalee was changed to scale AD I know the heal would prob need some tweak.

Thurgo5/13/2019, 3:37:29 AM6 votes

There is a place for Mid Nidalee and Top Nidalee in League of Legends and with some thinking we can all figure it out!

Gàylörd5/13/2019, 2:59:38 AM6 votes

The main problem with current Nidalee is a 700 range pounce that locks you onto the hunted target, and Nidalee has too much damage loaded into executing targets.

This means when Nidalee gets ahead, she can't be stopped. She jumps across and 1 shots anybody who gets the hunt on them which isn't fair to the enemy nor fun for the Nidalee player.

Nidalee would be more fun to play against and to play if you had to land multiple spears instead of 1 spear/trap and then flying into them.

SheepBot5/13/2019, 3:20:38 AM6 votes

In the past, Riot has reverted champion reworks that promoted unhealthy gameplay. I think Nidalee falls under this premise.

I do not play Nidalee, but playing against Nidalee seems to be unhealthier than it was back in the day when a spear would take a carry out of a fight, I believe they have nerfed the projectile some so it shouldn't be that bad if damage returns.

Other Acc Banned5/13/2019, 3:46:58 AM4 votes

As a jungle main, who plays mid secondary, I would kill to have Nidalee more viable in lane again. Laning Nidalee is a lot more fun than Jungle nidalee and it is way more rewarding to throw a spear and land it through minions than it is from the fog.

We don't even have the invisible spear glitch anymore that plagued Nidalee Seasons 1-4. They are much harder to land now and deserve the damage back

Nevrankroaton5/7/2019, 9:32:50 AM2 votes

If I can shime it very quick, I was spamming Nidalee AD top when it was strong and I truly hope for every person in the world it never come back because it was truly horrible to lane against.

I am no fan of revert (I am a vocal hater of reverting leblanc at her old braindead moronic state instead of continuing to work on her rework) but I sincerely think old Nidalee was never a truly relevant mid other than surviving until 6 to be useful in push and then throwing yolo spear to try to chunk that carry with high damage.

In this regard, I don't truly see a point in Nidalee being reverted. Top AD bruiser nid was aids, I loved it but it was absolute cancer for everyone fighting her (even ranged champion would hate her, it is that bad), mid AP Nidalee is obnoxious when strong (spear reminding you that Zoe was truly never the skillshot cancer) so I think I rather have her current kit tuned to find some space to help people wanting to lane with her (flat heal? Q with a slightly larger hitbox? Making E better for clearing minion?) than having some revert or her jungling possibility being removed.

Old Q spam nidalee was aids and not fun for opponent, now when I play nidalee, I feel I have a wholework to do that get rewarded (Hitting Q to mark, using W to jump on the person, use E then Q to kill peeps) and it is cool. It feel skill, I just think the counterplay isn't that big if the opponent get hit by your Q (but I mean, your Q is your whole work to put in right?) indeed but yeah. No revert, rather make some buff to help you guys in lane.

There was once a skill in turning Nidalee into the direction of a pounce, and it was rewarding and no longer is fulfilled.

It was just obnoxious. It is the kind of complexity that just make it harder for no reason.

downvote. go play zoe.

Illabethe5/7/2019, 4:01:08 AM2 votes

Personally I think people who complain about the current Nidalee as Feast of famine are using the wrong runes, building the wrong builds and don't know what to do after they suddenly can't dive because of team fights.

I just pulled Nidalee off the shelf for the first time in like 580+ games, and dominated with her.

It took me about 6 minutes to stop casting Q before E, but after I did... I just shredded and never missed a single Javelin. I was successfully casting Q and W simultaneously to create "no way out" ganks. And, since they removed the cooldown resets, (around season 7), I've started taking item 1414 item 3115 item 3100 ...... in that order, or replacing Lich bane with item 3025 .

I've never had a problem with scaling late game with her. If I can't team fight, I split push. She destroys a turret in about 5 Q's, so it's not a weak strategy.

If I can't go AP and survive late game, I get tanky. After all, her Q scales with missing HP % damage....

Support Nid is on par with other offmeta mages AFAIK

Minimac20005/8/2019, 4:50:21 AM1 votes

Nice thread, clearly put in a lot of work. However I can't agree, due to you wanting to turn her back into Zoe 1.0 The huge damage was moved off her spear for good reason. She was way too safe doing one shot levels of damage without ever having to commit to a fight. Recent nidalee doesn't have that problem because her spear is lackluster with the tradeoff of applying a mark that can do tons of damage if you want to take a risk and pop it. This is a healthy playstyle, allowing her power to have a window to punish, and is why I believe they should not move her q damage at all, just leave it where it is

Edit:I don't play nidalee, just parroting the info that was buzzing when zoe came out and was cancer
