@Riot Let's have some follow up dicussion on zyra.

So first of all this is directed mostly at higher elos, although I do think this is relevant for lower elos,I don't think it's as relevant as the supports I'll be mentioning(besides zyra) don't have enough of a presence for low elo players to adapt their play to them.

Currently I'm rather surprised at the AI of her plants,I guess I got so used to her old clunky AI that I didn't realize how bad it is,this should be a solid buff...to her winrate.

Issue is: as bot lane currently works, meta tank supports who basically define the lane have a very strong lockdown and stickiness, with the new itemization damage just doesn't deter them anymore,If you do not have a very potent disengage(morg e and q are a good example of that) you are at best a very situational pick and most likely just out of viability(sona/velkoz shares this problem as well, even nami struggles with this),this is more than just because of enemy bot lane pressure but because of jungler pressure as well, hell even disengage oriented tanks(like braum) can follow up and escape ganks better than zyra, who is much more offensively oriented.

And then you start taking roam and map pressure into account, zyra is just so vulnerable its even hard for her to ward, whereas roaming or even counterganking for her is very risky for her,she also is forced into a choice between mobility(as in mobo boots) and damage(sorc boots),on one hand she needs to build damage to justify being picked,on the other hand the map pressure mobos gives is just critical for the vast majority of supports, zyra among them.

All of this just boils down to the fact that, zyra simply stands no chance against opponents who are aware of her weaknesses and are willing to exploit them, plant ai won't change that, the reverted ult buff also won't change that, she currently can sort of survive off of "people don't know how to play against her, because people don't play her, because if people played her people would know how to play against her",but the lower elos won't pick her up because the higher elos won't play her,and higher elos won't play her because they don't want to rely on such a "strength".

I feel that with the current tank support meta(which pretty much stayed for years,so I don't see much sense in hoping it will go away),there's no way to make zyra good at higher levels of play without making her oppressive at lower levels of play, unless giving a much stronger disengage on her early levels, which would probably require a lot of changes to zyra, and I'm not sure anybody wants that.

Due to that,as much as I used to enjoy support zyra I simply feel like she is out of potential in bot lane, and I think it's much more feasible to make her work mid without making too many changes to her(which will just frustrate her playerbase),as I feel the damage she brings is capable of deterring skilled opponents from just outright killing her in mid lane,I feel that she has the potential to be a solid niche pick with a good playerbase in mid lane, whereas I feel like I simply can't say the same for her support role.

Finally I would like to remind you again that this is focused mostly on high level/competitive play, and the effects it has on her popularity in lower levels of play, not so much on her strength in the lower elos, which I'm guessing that she's rather strong both mid and support, due to her aoe focused nature.

Any chance a rioter feels like sharing his thoughts on the matter? It would be greatly appreciated...

it's like she wasn't designed to be a support champion but a solo mage or something...

Man please don't bring back mage "support" meta, that shit was dumb

Tanky engage supports are fun. They require an understanding of when to engage with factors like minion control and power spikes, knowing when to play safe, and they require ADC and support to be coordinated and work together to achieve a goal.

Mage support is just like, "lol I'ma sit in this bush and throw out spells when I want wherever I want". It's annoying and takes very little strategizing or teamwork.

Like honestly there's literally never a bad time for Zyra to throw some damage onto the enemy laners except for when she needs to save mana, meanwhile I can easily think of a crapton terrible for Leona to engage. Very little decision making goes into mage supports.

They should just redo her passive. Even if it was just a shitty stat buff I wouldnt care. Her passive could literally be "Zyra starts with 15 extra movement speed" and I'd be more than happy.

Some ideas I think would make a difference to her:

  1. Increase the missile speed of E until it hits a unit (upon hitting a unit it slows down)
  2. Increase her AA range to 600 or even 625 to make her a little more like a natural lane bully
  3. Increase the root duration on lvl 1 E to 1 second
  4. Increase the range on her R a bit
  5. Increase her ms and base def stats (my least favourite suggestion)
  6. Increase her ms when near her plants
  7. Change her passive to something more useful

I think for the sheer amount of glaring weaknesses Zyra has, she can afford quite a bit more power in her kit.

I'm all for making her a pure mid-laner again, but I would literally pay money to not see Zyra back as a support. If Riot does decide to adjust Zyra, they'd best make damn sure people won't abuse her bot lane again, and that probably implies she'll need a lot of changes because part of the issue is her base stats are just too damn high.

Comments/questions from a lowly Silver 2:

I have experienced some of the same problems you have even at low elo. I've generally solved them, but I'm interested in your opinion on why it won't work higher up. The biggest problems being mobility (throughout the game) and only having E for engage/disengage (other than R).

My problem was needing to use E poke to get any follow-up from my adc. Then it was on cooldown too long, so I had no disengage for ganks or all-ins. So I just started rushing CDR. Swapped to pure scaling CDR glyphs and building Ionian Boots second. This puts me around 50% altogether at level 18, but it gives me lots and lots of early CDR. Easily 30-35% around level 10-12. By the time I'm actually hitting cap through level and ranking W last, I'll sell boots and change to Sorc. That's usually around the time I feel comfortable selling my Spellthief's, so there's not much deficit.

I've looked at a lot of high-elo players' builds, and they very rarely prioritize CDR. But in my experience, I need the CDR (at least at this point) to make roaming safer and to have more reliable peel, more frequent disengage, and more engage opportunities for the team to take advantage of in uncoordinated solo queue. Only one Zyra main even bothered with a mana item, and s/he builds Tear most games along with CDR.

And that's basically what I do. Build a tear and stack CDR, and it works (for now) very well against tanks and junglers. Not only is your E on shorter CD all game (around 8 sec instead of 12), but your seed regen time is cut down immensely very early. So you have enough seeds to use them for safer vision/warding, and you have enough to use one virtually every time you launch an E, and you have enough mana (with meditation) that you can rank E fast and still be pretty spammy with plants. Even if they dodge the E, you're still getting a buffer from plant slow.

I looked at your match history, and I noticed that you still have a pretty good win rate on her. I also noticed that you build her as more of a conventional support than any of the two dozen or so diamond+ players I've reviewed. Those builds almost universally focused on rushing item 3285 or item 3151. The most "support" oriented item I saw was item 3023, which seems like it could be a better option for you than item 3060 given your dislike of Zyra's slow and hazardous roaming. I like having it, but I didn't like having to wait that late for my CDR.

I am curious about your opinion on this. Down here in silver, I deal with tank supports with more frequent plants and getting E cooldown closer to par with their engage abilities. Do you think that will hit a wall at a certain bracket, or do you think it's a strategy that might work where you are?
