@Riot - Why was devour nerfed in such a way that makes it bad for ranged champions?

I get it. Vayne with Bork + Devour is pretty broken. Also, Kayle. But so is Vi, Shyvana, Yi (albeit slightly less), Xin, etc. Why was devour nerfed for every 4 autos for ranged but for melee it's still the same? League is no longer a game where the poor melees who can't run to the adcs exist. It has turned into a game where that melee actually has a way to catch up to most adcs and destroy them all.

Why not just standardize it with every 3 auto attacks? Keep the damage at 50 so it can be balance all round and still have the same effect.

Yeah but we're talking about a jungle item. They might as well say "ONLY MELEE CHAMPIONS CAN JUNGLE".

Yeah I know there's warrior but that's more AD focused champions (of which there are some who are ranged) but the devour passive shouldn't be so unreliable. Nerf the damage for ranged, sure. But standardize the devour passive.

I'd be alright with the nerf if Melee champions with strong on-hits didn't have a way to get on the enemy. But the abusers of the item with strong on-hits Jax Vi XinZhao MasterYi shouldn't be able to proc their on hits passive item 3624 in 2 attacks if they can still easily reach the enemy target. If it was designed for 3, let the first attack be 3 and if they stick in fights for more than 3 attacks, proc at your rate. Here's what I'm saying.

Take Vi vs Annie . Also, let's represent her passive by the icon - item 3624. Let's say Vi was a noob and missed a fully charged Q but managed to get in AA range of Annie

If vi has Devour, Current functionality:

  1. Vi punches Annie Annie
  2. With this punch, Vi procs passive item 3624.
  3. Vi punches Annie Annie
  4. With this punch, Vi procs passive item 3624.
  5. Vi punches Annie Annie
  6. With this punch, Vi procs passive item 3624.

3 passive procs. So what?

**If vi doesn't have devour, **

  1. Vi punches Annie Annie
  2. Vi punches Annie Annie
  3. With this punch, Vi procs passive item 3624.
  4. Vi punches Annie Annie
  5. Vi punches Annie Annie
  6. With this punch, Vi procs passive item 3624.

2 passive procs. Big deal. So, Vi procs her passive item 3624 faster.

Except, Vi has 2 AA reset. So she can do that devour combo in the span of 1.75 seconds when it would have taken her like 3.5 seconds in reality. What this means, is that Vi's balance state as an autoattacker is pretty much tied to this item since there are no downsides for her to proc her passive.

I'm saying standardize it to If vi has devour

  1. Vi punches Annie Annie
  2. Vi punches Annie Annie
  3. With this punch, Vi procs passive item 3624. (1 charge gets carried over from devour)
  4. Vi punches annie. Annie
  5. Vi procs passive item 3624.
  6. Vi punches annie (Another devour charge) After this, she can be proccing it like live functionality. That is,
  7. Vi procs passive item 3624
  8. Vi punches annie Annie
  9. Vi punches annie and procs passive item 3624 due to Devour procs the third charge.

That way she has to work to get that passive rolling like live functionality and doesn't get as much free damage as she would have.

Okay I know I'm using Vi for this example. But what I'm saying is that autoattackers should profit from rapidly proccing devour passive only when they manage to stay in fights for a little longer. TL: DR - Let devour be working when melee champions stay in the battle to fight and NOT when they manage to get 2 autoattacks. Also, give the same functionality to range although with less damage.

I don't really care that this was 2 months ago because it is still such a huge issue. I can completely agree with the op. Most jungle champions melee or not tend to have strong gap closers any way. so your argument that melee champions have the disadvantage falters. champions like vi regardless of whether or not she misses her first dash, at level 6 when most champions are getting close to or have reached sated she has a 2nd gap closer thats not a skill shot. Yi can ignore slows and jax can dodge abilities. Sated allows on hit affects to proc twice so things like Vi's vault breaker, Jaxs ult passive and Yi's dual strike get proced twice. That is an insane amount of damage and most of the time, regardless of whether or not you are a tank or the adc you will die within a few seconds. and unless you have a strong stun or knock up you cant do anything against it. You have to take into account things like blind pick when you nerf an item. You dont know that the enemy is picking yi and so none of your teammates chose a champion with a hard stun. Yi already dealt stupid amounts of damage and once he gets sated well i hope you like not being able to dual him. As Yi ive come back from a gap like 0-6 once i hit devouring just because it is so broken. instead of nerfing it for only ranged champions WHICH YOU DONT EVEN SEE THAT OFTEN IN THE JUNGLE ANYWAY! they should have just either changed it to 3 hits for both or 4 hits for both. that would be a true balance change and not what ever the shit they gave us was. I dont care what inherent disadvantages you think melee champions have but clearly you are seeing things from a fogged lens. At the time im posting this i had just gotten out of a match where i was vs a jungle yi, I was kha'zix i practically was glued to Yi's ass untill 6, counter jungling and picking up 3 kills on him. He still managed to come back and single-handedly won the game for his team. You can not just nerf a champion based on high elo play or draft pick you have to take into consideration the low elo scene and blind normals.

Here's a solution: delete it. Sated carried me so fast into platinum I got scared. Shit's broken as hell.
