The cost of making League a "spectator sport" is too damn high!
The structural changes that Riot has made to (successfully) turn League into a spectator sport have directly eroded what made the game enjoyable in previous seasons. Damage creep and snowballing are the most obvious effects, but it goes deeper. Champion design and the very structure of the game have been altered. All the attempts to make the early game "less boring" have resulted in the current state of one sided curb stomps being the norm.
Riot was so obsessed with trying to make LCS and LCK games more "exciting" they blinded themselves to the consequences. Back in Seasons 1-5 when pro play was "boring" and the early game "didn't matter" most non professional games had plenty of kills and action. The pro's and Nasus mains might be farming for 45 mins but everyone else was Kung Fu Fighting.
Early game has always mattered, harassing your opponent, getting more CS, getting kills or any other advantage in lane was important. It didn't automatically win you the game. It gave you the tools to win the game.
Additions and changes to the game structure like weaker towers, tower first blood, higher overall damage, more global gold, more wave clear on champions, more wave clear on items and more high mobility champions were all made without proper consideration of the costs.
Almost all the problems Riot has created over the last 4 years are because they want to drag risk averse professional players into fights.
One sided blow outs are not fun. They are not fun in real sports or in E Sports. They are not fun in League or Dota. Close games are fun. Back and forth games are fun.
Riot your goal for the second half of 2018 and all of 2019 should be to make as many close games as possible.
