why i hate top laners... from a junglers perspective

arc95··77 votes·10,287 views

ok first let me say there isn't a player i love more than a good top laner

but generally this is what happens top lane goes against a strong lane bully ...Darius Renekton Irelia ... but more so Darius

and they try to duel them in lane... guess what there probably isnt a champion in the game that can take Darius early on in the game... so usually the toplane will die right away and give first blood.... honestly this is like 1/2 of my games... seriously most of the first bloods i see go to the early game lane bully bruisers

well from that point our top lane will tp back in to lane with a item 1036 or item 1028 think they are the reincarnation of Jesus and jump back into lane like and idiot and die again

well at this point top lane is down 0/2 and behind like 30 cs and he will start pinging the shit out of me to gank when im still lvl 3 and barely clearing wolves(because what happened above occurred in like the first few minutes of the game)... are you kidding me im not touching your lane it would be an easy double for the enemy... just sit back shut up and hug your damn turret

but no you top laners will continue to feed and type in all chat gg shit jung report mumu

no you just fed your damn lane and your looking for a scapegoat... im gonna go secure dragon/objectives and gank lanes that will actually yield a positive result

EDIT: i dont care if you give up a couple kills early but... that 0/2 start turns into 0/6 alot of times... also dont flame me because I dont camp your lane

EDIT: keep in mind im talking about what is probably the first 10 or 15 minutes of a game not the entire game

EDIT: ok i get there are counters to Darius just like any champion... I should have said there aren't many Champs that compare to darius in terms of being a tough lane bully... and few meta/viable top laners can handle him in the early game

sincerely,

             your ~~reasonable~~ "shit" jungler

I know the feels.

I get the same thing only with Mid laners.

Mid lane dies once/twice solo to his opponent. Mid Laner: "You should be ganking this (Insert Champion)"

Holy shit, its not even 5 minutes or I haven't even finished my first jungle clear to recall back in that time frame.

Jofeyy9 votes

I main mid, and i practice playing with no ganks or blue buff. Not only is it easier for the jungler to do well, but its a crutch (blue buff especially) i can do without.

If you want to gank, or give me blue then by all means. But i try to not ask for it.

Although there are some match ups that cannot be won without ganks you just have to differentiate the crybabies from the rest.

cloman1003 votes

i was playing urgot in mid against a yasuo where i got first blood in 0:49 seconds into game... my team was like omg on skype lol. then my connection shot up and i dc for next 5 mins :P "URGOT TOO GOOD AGAINST YASUO AT LVL 1Urgot "

Apollocliptic1 votes

Yeah, I have started that mentality, I usually play Mana hungry champs like Galio and anirva or Orianna, but I have a plan for using them without blue. I do get annoyed however when the enemy is a champ like Zed or Kata (with no resource) AND my jungler is like Zac or something and they still won't give blue, knowing it'll make the game VASTLY better if I had it. But I won't flame, I'll just quietly fume while hugging my turret.

The only time I do actively get annoyed is when the jungler DOES gank, either A when I don't have any mana or hp to help, or B while I am not ready pinging him not to go, and they die, give away blue to the enemy, and then don't come back (or only come back when I am somewhere else proceeding to die again and flaming me for feeding - with 0 deaths)

So many times I have matched my opponent in gold, even if they are 1 kill ahead I'll be ahead in farm, or the other way around, but the jungler gives me no help and then feeds my opponent and flames me, that is ridiculous but very, very common :/

Jofeyy1 votes

I get that. Personally if i feel if the jungle isn't good enough to gank successfully i just tell them to not show up to my lane unless its to farm while im gone.

Also fighting against resourceless champs is the worst early game. But i find if you can survive and make it to 1000 gold, you can go back and get either item 3114 + item 1056 or item 3070 or item 3028 depending on what champ you are and who you're vs. After that their pressure dies down a bit but you also have to learn to manage your mana too :( . Whoever plays a zed or kata (etc.) can freely spam abilities like a 4 year old mashing buttons and get away with it. Unfortunately that's the perks of playing them.

Idol + dorans works wonders for me :)

Arveanor1 votes

This may be only me, but in the interest of smoother team environments, I'd like to say that as a jungler, it comes off pretty negative if you say something like "dont gank my lane". I'm usually interested in how my laners feel about their (own) matchups, confidence, etc, and will gank based on that, based on how much people scale, and obviously based on where people are positioned in lanes.

If you don't think you'll need pressure, let your jungler know, but try to do it in a friendly manner, b/c the straight up "dont visit." always makes me feel like w/e lane said that just doesn't want to be a part of the team, and makes me doubt if they will follow up on engages later on etc.

Jofeyy1 votes

No no, you're 100% right. I will usually tell them "not to worry" since I can handle my lane in these cases. Never in a rude way, I always keep things civil. When I'm gone back to base or roaming, I'll tell them to feel free to take farm that will go to waste. Even if my jung isn't ganking I'll let them know when the other jung shows up to gank me so they know where he is at that time. However most of the time my duo partner mains jung so we have an agreement going LOL.

I'm sorry if I made it seem like I was calling the jungler in a negative way.

Aatrox spams pings for assistance while I'm literally still clearing the first camp Darius FIRST BLOOD Aatrox "report noc no ganks" Nocturne item 3070 (I haven't even upgraded my machete yet, for the love of...)

Actually what makes me more nuts is if any lane completely fails to ward at all, gets ganked repeatedly by their jungler (and they still haven't bought one ward, because hey that trinket has a cooldown), then acts like there's something I'm supposed to do about it. I don't know what it is they expect. I've even asked, What do you want me to do to stop them from ganking from unwarded brush?

Sometimes I ward for them, though. If they still get ganked again and again while that ward's up (because map awareness is your friend), I know I'm in for it.

""""> Aatrox spams pings for assistance while I'm literally still clearing the first camp

Darius FIRST BLOOD Aatrox "report noc no ganks" Nocturne item 3070 (I haven't even upgraded my machete yet, for the love of...)""""

but its aatrox...nvm darius still wins unless that aatrox is a challenger smurf

Windfallen3 votes

Nawh, as but a humble silver 4 player... You don't need to be a challenger smurf to beat darius as Aatrox.

Max E and fire off lots of poke. It's magic damage and it's taste of darius's own medicine (Darius has a lot of damage in the form of magic damage, so it's hard to go on defense outside of building straight up HP. It's not in the form of poke though.)

Things to be weary of against darius as aatrox: Ignite. He has just upped the anti on his early cheese factor and is much stronger in a duel against you, however he's still on a ticking timer of "Either I stomp this lane into dust or I start falling off heavily" (Aatrox isn't know for his lategame either, but is way more flexible in teamfights and naturally a better splitpusher... Darius is even more useless if he opted ignite instead of TP/flash)

More than anything, the enemy jungler. He could lose you this lane and may play a bigger factor than darius himself.

The lane explained: You need to realize that you can't really 100-0 him like he can to you. Your strength comes from the poke he doesn't have and the sustain he doesn't have. Weave in and out of trades if you choose to go into a melee brawl that isn't enough to kill him. Be mindful of his pull as it will cancel your Q in mid flight. Disengage early so when he does pull you back, you can still walk away. Your ability to heal back up with W by whacking minions is huge. He has no built in sustain. When darius trades in the middle of a minion wave, which he is likely to do... it shoves the lane toward your tower. He's got nothing but flash for an escape and is an easy gank. You have no reason to push to his tower. Ever. On any champion. If it can be helped, just don't.

Aatrox is actually listed as a great counter to darius and it's true. As with most counters, it isn't a Garen -teed win.

stealthfox942 votes

I don't get why Aatrox is listed as a counter to Darius, that lane seems pretty strongly in darius's favor sure as you mentioned it's possible for aatrox to win if he plays smart. But even with his ult up he still loses trades to Darius.

Apollocliptic1 votes

The same can be said for Volibear and Riven I tend to beat Riven in trades, but struggle in laning phase because if she "doesn't" trade with me, she has an easy time poking and escaping. I think the above matchup is similar. Atrox can "outplay" Darius even if he can't win a direct fight. How you play is a big factor

Other examples that I see might include Galio vs Ahri. He can completely out damage her, and out sustain her, but if he fails to land consistent skill shots, or Ahri utilises her mobility well to whittle down his hp, Galio can still lose either due to mana or just generally being outplayed. Winning hit for hit isn't the same as winning a lane, and teamfights is another story

Sockenfreack2 votes

I think that's the . Here. If your aatrox and you don't make use of that sweet poke you are wasting your kit. The laneing consist of more then the trades and the brawls. I won't go in a brawl with a Darius if I haven't poked him for days. Darius is a very strong fighter in all ins. Same with voli. Riven can poke him down but when riven overextended or makes a mistakes voli brings down the hammer and beats the bitch like ther is no tomorrow.

Apollocliptic1 votes

Exactly (Voli -> QEW that over extended Riven) Volibear : "What? You didn't see that coming?"

Sockenfreack1 votes

Exactly! Or nice stuff like: Voli low. Riven 50% health. Trying to push turret. Wit till minions almost gone q flash e w :D a lot of people are shocked how fast you would die under folks Thunder dick and a turret

Windfallen1 votes

I have to agree. There are much harder counters out there. Most mages would probably have to think a lot less than Aatrox does in this lane.

A smart darius is going to build item 3075 as a first item, also. This makes trading with him through auto attacks much riskier, especially if you went for a item 3153 So much so, that even as approaching the mid game... Darius is thriving off the raw power of his kit and doesnt need more AD from items to be effective.

Can't stress how much a good gank from the enemy jungler can offset the intricacies to this matchup, either.

Aatrox can hold his own and even come out on top.... but don't expect to just unlock him and be a Darius counter right off the bat.

Beacon 0F Light11 votes

I've played a lot of top, and because of that I know that my duties are to (in order) -Not feed -Farm -TP into bot lane and drag fights when needed

Nowhere in there is -Kill enemy laner

When I'm playing Sion vs Darius/Vlad/similar tops I know that my focus is not going to be on killing them. Some people think that "winning lane" only means "getting more kills on them than they did on you." But if I go 0-2 in that matchup but come out of lane with 30+ more cs, more teamfight presence, and more impact with tps, I have done my job as the top.

Also, although this is less of a thing in solo queue than it is in LCS, tops usually don't get as much jungle pressure as mid or bot. Why? Not only does the top benefit from farm more than anything else, but they're also the furthest away from dragon, an important early-mid game objective.

My advice to any top laner: learn to survive and keep your farm up without any help from anyone. Sure, ganks for top can be impactful and they are pretty nice, but the whole "top is an island " is a thing for a reason. And it's also why you take TP.

People like in OPs post just need to learn that they're not the freaking mid laner.

Riven I'm Akali not Fizz So Fiora Sure Zed about Quinn That. (well... I actually kill mid laner. . .)

Beacon 0F Light2 votes

True. But I still think the first three are still more important even for them.

Also I freaking love Quinn top.

NemeBro7 votes

I wouldn't gank a Darius that was 2/0 with over thirty CS more than his laning opponent either.

Because I play Darius fairly often. What you think is a "gank", the Darius player sees as a "double kill", in most cases. Darius has legitimately 1v2 potential if he gets ahead.

I Main Swain2 votes

people don't realize this surprisingly often with bruisers (so pretty much every top laner), my personal favorites being Chogath and Annie. yes I play bruiser top annie, don't judge me its good I swear

WillHealForHonor3 votes

The time syndra was op i often times just pressed r on the lee sin who thought he was about to gank.. and then i got more fed :P

JustGotFired5 votes

its ok, i never ping when im top, if i lose tower, i lose tower. More farm for me when they come to my tier 2.

SpecterVonBaren5 votes

To be fair with the Darius example... if the person is melee then there's shit all they can do about it since Darius will just sit in their minion wave and dare them to try and cs and if they do proceed to shove his axe straight up their rear end. And I hear so often people say "Darius is easy to deal with because he's so easy to gank" well yes, but the jungler needs to gank him, and other lanes may be more prime for ganking, and the other issue is the jungler needs to KEEP ganking top if their top laner is a tank because they're never going to be able to deal with him.

As much flak as CertainlyT gets for his creations, his first one is still his worst, in my opinion.

Jungle Lux God4 votes

There is no way that Darius could possibly be worse than the abomination known as Kalista.

Both are cancer to deal with as melees, but at least Darius doesn't make the game unfun for your team as well the way Kalista does.

SpecterVonBaren6 votes

Darius is worse simply because his playstyle is so binary. Are you ranged? Congrats, the person playing Darius isn't going to have any fun. Are you melee? Sorry, you're not having any fun. Kalista is unfun to play against if she gets ahead, Darius is unfun to play against just by going into the same lane as him.

mybayarea1 votes

Oh he was talking about Top Lane. Play against a good Darius laner and it could make you cry with The lack of options you have, with his bleed damage and slow. He is the AD assassin.

Lucentile4 votes

So many of my jungle games in low bronze, before I even get to raptors or Red buff the score is 0-3 or 3-0, one way or the other.

UPfreely4 votes

just keep in mind that once in a while their enemy laner will be sitting in lane with next to no health and could easily be had for a kill. usually this is when people die, they get really greedy and go for it when they realize they aren't going to receive a gank.

arc953 votes

i didnt say i dont gank in general i said i dont gank if you chain feed your lane early i'll gladly help you secure a kill but im not gonna dive into the Darius who has an item 3074 or aitem 3143 before im level 4.

dEAdbUs3 votes

Dari can get Hydra or Randuin before you get lev 4, only if you were afk for 10 mins. Each one (Randuin or Hydra) costs about 3k - player need to 100% cs for 10 mins to get 3k gold. If you're going agressive or your laner is agressive , that means you will miss a lot cs. So your words is just not truth.

arc954 votes

ok I over exaggerated but my point still stands XD

Nuclear Panda4 votes

Coming from a top laner AND jungler, (my 2 best roles) I don't expect you to gank, but if you do, PLEASE for the love of god, take into account that there are 2 types of top champs that you need to pay attention to. 1: the snowbally/late game monster champ. This includes champs like riven or nasus. The top laner needs to keep them down, and if they are fed or stacked, don't gank, it's no worth. 2: the 2v1 top champ. This includes rumble, darius, my favorite, mordekaiser. These types can 2v1 the opposing top laner and jungler. This is not the normal gank, you need to be careful and aware of their cool downs. If a Darius's ult is up, try not to take a ton of damage and get dunked, this goes for both roles. Darius is slow, take advantage of that. To end my opinion, top lane is an island. Don't expect a gank. But junglers should be aware of what type of top laner the enemy is. They can just let a nasus stack up and overpower your teammate. If the top laner gets camped, put pressure down bot and get dragon. Don't just let your teammate's pressure up top on the nasus that needs camping go to waste.

EkkoFroffles3 votes

I want to say you're wrong, as I'm a top main, but it seems that whenever someone goes top besides me this is the sort of thing that happens. I've gone from 0/3 to helping carry because I know how to play safe, build properly, pick my spots, and find other ways to make myself useful to my team. But if I'm in a ranked match, and top lane goes 0/3, I'm just thinking "gg" at that point.

Though that's also just bronze in general. If I had a penny for every time I saw someone try to duel someone levels ahead of them who they probably wouldn't win against even if all things were equal, I'd be richer than Bill Gates. Lately, Saturday and Sunday have been Support Saturday and Sunday for me and so I've seen more of this than usual. Like the uber-fed Xin Zhao comes in for a gank, getting spotted by our ward beforehand. I'm Nautilus, and blow every last bit of my CC on him to give Ashe a chance of escaping. She proceeds to stand still, trying to 1v2 the ADC and support further up lane, before taking my immobilizing of Xin as the go-ahead to fight him with his ADC and support literally right behind him. And I was the one who was "fail." "Fail supp."

That's honestly the worst feeling, sacrificing yourself to save your team, only for them to go back in and die along with you.

This depends on pick - jungler must babysit lane with champion that can carry game.
