Mixed damage is getting annoying as fuck

Can i just know why especially ranged cancer champions like Gnar Jayce do mixed damage? Jayce rushing youmu last whisper and triforce, you thought about rushing armor to counter it? well shame for you that his ulti does magic damage with an ad ratio, and his E does %hp into magic damage(with an AD ratio) with 10 sec cd at rank 6 (6 sec cd with 40% cdr, assuing he has 10% cdr from runes).

And don't let me start on gnar building black cleaver and still having a vayne passive into magic damage.

solution? make those spells physical damage and reduce the damage to compensate.

Riot said they want interactive ways of counterplay and outplay for every champion How does this translate to KogMaw ?u either destroy him till he gets his build or death by vomit and let's not forget over 80% of his power it's on %autoatacks..how is this interactive at all?

TequilaZombie5 votes

He's a standing machine gun with no mobility or meaningful CC who happens to be extra squishy. I honestly have no idea how you could counter him!

I repeat..how is this interactive?

General Theritt3 votes

How is it interactive? Because assassins can easily delete kog and most of them are pretty fun. Also, its a pretty wide roster of assassins, so not much complaints. And a crap ton of champs can just charge and CC kog before he even gets the chance to be useful Malphite Maokai Alistar Sion or pull them right on in Gragas Skarner Blitzcrank or just remove the guy from the match entirely Nautilus with a thousand stuns and CCs. There's a pretty wide roster of kog counters. Nice to see people are so single minded they can't even think of possibly "trying a new champion" [slayer-jinx-unamused]

kogmaw can't instantly kill you until 40 mins because of all his %maxhp damage though

Stop complaining and just build armor, it's not like their attacks deal magical-- oh. Well then just build MR lol, if they do magical damage then it's not like they can do physical-- oh... Well here, just build HP. That way you don't have to worry about what kind of damage it is! It's not like those champions do % max HP--

Well, shit.

Sona x Rubick7 votes

that's exactly how i feel.

"Riot didn't explicitly state that they were supposed to be mixed damage! Weh!"

Aaaand...this is Riot's problem because...?

Gnar's mixed damage is all during his mini form, entirely from his W. This means that magic damage is not his consistent damage output, as the rest of his entire kit, especially in mega form, is physical damage. Armor and Health will help well enough against him. And, if Gnar's team is smart like they should be, there's going to be someone on that team that makes you want MR anyway.

Jayce...is even more hilariously limited in magic damage. His hammer-mode W, E, and the R switch into that mode are all of his magic damage output. He has a small burst of magic damage specifically in melee combat. Again, Armor and Health will go a long way in stopping most of his damage, especially early game.

The only champions that "have an excuse" to not build any defensive stats are Marksmen and Assassins, who are built with all of their scaling set on damage output. Mages and Supports have access to a slew of offensive+defensive options, and Tanks and Bruisers usually scale on defensive items better than offensive options.

MrryZ7 votes

Gnars W IS his main damage output though.

JustMyBassCannon8 votes

Oh, really now?

I want you to tell me something. How many W procs does he take to kill you?

One? Three? Even if you have no bonus MR, it would take 5 sets of W procs for half of his damage output to be based on his W. At maximum rank.

That means he landed a total of 15 attacks and spells on you, all of them within a short span of time. And, frankly, I don't believe that a Gnar at either level 9 or 13 took that many attacks to take down a target unless they'd built pure defense and didn't think to grab MR for anyone else that happens to have magic damage.

MrryZ4 votes

That would be because most people build gnar as a bruiser, he isn't meant to be dealing hgue amounts of burst with any of his abilites or attacks but rather have a constant output of damage onto them. also just because it's his main source of damage doesn't mean he won't get a large amount of damage from elsewhere in his kit such as his mega form.

JustMyBassCannon3 votes

If it his his main source of damage, that means it will be the majority of his damage, period. And that is not the case.

Just like with Vayne's Silver Bolts, the majority of the damage dealt is Physical, meaning Armor and HP goes a long way to preventing your demise, or at least extending your life long enough that someone else finishes them off.

MrryZ2 votes

I don't play much Gnar but the way I see it, his main consistent damage will come from his w, assuming you're using a bruiser / tank build.

Also you can't really compare Gnar and Vayne here as they're two entirely different champions with different playstyles and buildpaths, Yes vayne will deal more physical than true damage but you can't just shift that knowledge over to gnar who doesn't build as much AD as her.

The way you see it. The way you feel about it.

Funny thing, math could not be forced to give a shit about feelings.

The only way that Gnar's W damage in mini-form actually exceeds his total physical output is if he does not build any AD, never uses his Q or E because their rank 1 damage is higher than his basic attacks, and is level 9 with maxed W.

That. Is the only time. When the majority of his damage can ever be from his W passive. Assuming his target has >1130 max HP as well. For every point of AD, the target needs +21~22 max HP more for equilibrium. For each use of his Q, the target needs another ~118 HP before any bonus AD. For each use of his E, the target needs another ~61 HP before any bonus HP. At level 9, before his stats automatically go up and increase those numbers even more.

So, Bruiser build is out of the equation, because that involves AS and AD. AD runes can't be involved at all with Gnar. And he can't use his abilities if he wants the majority of his damage to be from his W. Can't be allowed to go Mega-form either, because that removes his magic damage.

Also you can't really compare Gnar and Vayne here as they're two entirely different champions with different playstyles and buildpaths, Yes vayne will deal more physical than true damage but you can't just shift that knowledge over to gnar who doesn't build as much AD as her.

I am not making a straight comparison of their kits. I am picking up one ability that is very similar on two different kits and stating that these similarities lead to a very similar situation. There are obvious differences between them, but noticing that difference isn't rocket science.

Sona x Rubick12 votes

if you read his rework, corki was designed to do mixed damage, that's his strength, forcing you to build mr+armor

it isn't gnar or jayce's strength.

CeexSett1 votes

Oh I did read his rework, since I main him, you know :/

I was just stating the prime example of mixed damage, nothing else. Jayce and Gnar's mixed damage is nothing compared to Corki's and Kog'Maw's.

Sona x Rubick3 votes

{quoted}

Jayce and Gnar's mixed damage is nothing

good thing that you used "compared", cause else this would have been false, their mixed damage are still high because it's %hp damage, and jayce also des magic damage with his melee W.

CeexSett1 votes

Being %hp damage you can't qualify it as high or low. It isn't quantifiable in numbers.

Jayce's Melee W isn't the real problema with his kit really, it's more like the burst from swapping stances.

Sona x Rubick3 votes

and the melee E.

CeexSett1 votes

That is %missing hp, the real damage is the EQ from cannon and the Q hit from cannon stance.

Sona x Rubick4 votes

the fuck? his E does 20% max hp damage.

Only Play Darius6 votes

Mixed damage is mainly a problem for the toplaners who are forced to rush defense items against ranged champions. Corki isn't a toplaner

Sire Hippington4 votes

the worst is that it includes %damage aswell, makeing it about as shitty to itemize against as %health truedamage.

Jayce ulti?

Am I missing something...

Cheekynorth2 votes

Same here Jayce's ult just changes his AAs and abilities. No damage dealt...

EndlessSorcerer16 votes

Switching forms empowers his next autoattack.

Hammer form makes it deal additional damage, Cannon form makes it reduce armor/MR.

EndlessSorcerer7 votes

After switching to Hammer Form, his next autoattack deals bonus magic damage.

After switching to Cannon Form, his next autoattack reduces the target's armor and MR.

Jayce W does 400 magic damage rank 6 His Empowered Hammer stance auto attack does around 200 magic damage His Hammer E does 8% + 100%bonus AD, maxed last but it does 20% max health at max.

I think Jayce isn't as noticeable as Gnar because his E damage is pretty neglible like... I never really notice it, it's just another knockback early game and by late I usually have MR, his empowered auto attack is noticeable but it isn't INSANE, his W is kinda scary. This is mostly talking about early game. Gnar on the other hand is ridiculous...

oSEXYPLATYPUSo2 votes

well ashe does magic damage on ult. but she is ad .... majority of champs have mix damage of some kind. being ad ratios into magic damage or magic damgae that boost autos or full ap mages auto attacking doing phyiscal damage or champs who do true damage. its been part of league forever

But the reworks are full of mixed and % based damage.

Marshbouy3 votes

Harvey Rabbit2 votes

Let's just get straight to the point: the ap/ad situation in this game is a complete clusterfuck. It's such a huge clusterfuck that there is no real prospect for it to be fixed or improved because that would require a total overhaul of the game.

And Riot have said they don't believe in items that give MR and Armor at the same time because, "that is what building health is for." Of course there is only ONE item 3083 solid health building item in the game, but nevermind about that. [Yes, many other good items give health, but for all of the other ones health is merely a bonus tacked on to the item's main attributes.]

JustMyBassCannon2 votes

...and the HP being "tacked on" instead of being the core attribute is bad because...?

I fail to see why the 400 HP on Rylai's, the 300-500 HP on Rod of Ages, the 450 HP on Titanic Hydra, the 650 HP on Frozen Mallet, or really any bonus HP on any completed item would be considered a bad trade-off compared to the 800 on Warmog's. Even if you are an HP scalar champion like Zac or Mundo, you're not going to build just one HP item unless you built the first one for everything except the HP (such as Trinity Force on any non-bruiser).

Calling Warmog's "the only solid health item in the game" is bullshit. No completed health item gives less than 300 HP, with the exception of Doran's, Guardian's and the Eyes. Furthermore, all of them have benefits that could be more useful than Warmog's, depending on your champion. Sure, the free Red Buff-style heal is nice, but so are the several abilities of the other options.

Hell, the fact that you entirely overlooked Rod of Ages as a fantastic sustain item alone is frustrating. 500 HP, 400 Mana, and casting spells heals you from spent mana. Your mana meter extends your health. But no, Warmog's is the only good one.

Harvey Rabbit1 votes

Whatever, you're off on your own tangent. I'm not debating the merits of any of those items, only the fact that MR and Armor items are a thing, but health specific items there is really only one. All the others you mentioned have health as one of their bonuses but that is not the primary reason they are purchased.

JustMyBassCannon1 votes

To counter-posit, whereas you **do **buy those items for reasons other than Health;

  • You still buy them because they have Health
  • You only buy Warmog's specifically when you are stacking Health

And what about Randuin's Omen? What about Dead Man's Plate? What about Sunfire Cape? What about Banshee's Veil, Spirit Visage, Aegis/Locket?

Those are all solid Health+Resistance options. But, no, because they aren't just Health and Health alone, that makes them not valid nominations for good Health items. 'Because fuck reasoning, I'm upset that we don't have two Health sticks.'

The fact is, League has a fuckton of Health options with various bonuses and effects that make them worthwhile on different champions. The thought process goes like this: "Hmm, I need Health items. Which ones have effects that benefit my champion's playstyle and build the most? These are my options, so I'll take these because of those reasons, and that will also give me a significant Health boost."

And if you're a Tank, it's even easier, because you're just picking up the Health+Resistance type that benefits you more.
