To All The People Who Have a Main

Don't you get bored playing the same champion over and over again?

I understand the concept of finding fun but after an X amount of games on a champion, don't you get bored of it?

League has such a diverse pool filled with so many interesting characters that I can't imagine someone wanting to play a single champion over and over again. And I'm not even talking about the role/position.

With that out of the way are there people like me who will play ADC Varus in one game and then follow it up with Syndra Mid. Then duo with a friend who requests you playing support so you pick Janna and then close the day with a Yasuo top game.

Yeah I know I'm all over the place but doesn't mean that I don't want to win. I still give my lane a 100% but let's face it I won't win every lane. Even people who main role/positions don't always win their lanes. Sometimes the opponent is simply better. I don't appreciate being raged at. It isn't going to make me do any better. And while I'm at it, let me add that is is a freaking Normal Mode Blind Draft game. If I do happen to feed and we loose because of that, you aren't gonna loose your precious LP.

Any of you want just a chill guy to play Normals with? I'm on the NA servers.

I have almost half a million mastery points in Velkoz. The reason why I mostly play him is because I'm trying to climb in ranked.

To do that, I need to specialise. Humans learn the fastest from specialising. That's why you will never meet a doctor, lawyer, footballer, base baller, engineer, etc all in one human because then it will take you forever to learn all those things at once.

Trust me, specialising yields great results. Not to brag, but I specialised so much into Velkoz, that getting countered doesn't effect me in my elo. I laugh when the enemy team chooses Zed, Talon, or Yasuo because I always PWN them. Plus, I have been able to do cool 2v1 or 3v1 outplays. Me being the one.

Champions that typically have high play rates typically have lower win rates because some people choose those champions just for the sake of countering their enemy but they don't specialise in them. Experience is worth more than countering.

I'll get bored of Velkoz once I get into challenger.

DevlinCrow2 votes

That's actually really good advice for climbing, thank you :)

Tundra Fizz4 votes

The reason why I play Fizz almost 100% of the time is because I think he's really cute, and that's the determining factor of who or what I play as in all games.

...provided there's choices of course, because if you're going to play something like a Super Mario game, then most of the time you don't have a choice in what your appearance is.

Braum Mechanics4 votes

That is an interesting theory. Sometimes I'll pick a champion that I have never played with before simply because I bought a skin that I like. Aesthetics do add to our decision making.

Penta Ace1 votes

Very true. I dont get tired of playing champions that look good/cool.

Tundra Fizz1 votes

He added me to his friends list so I accepted, but only plays late at night which is problematic for me because I need to go to sleep early due to work (and the timezone difference doesn't help either). So we'll probably play same games over a Friday/Saturday night.

BluePolarizer2 votes

I play Hecarim even though he's trash because he's really fun due to his flexibility, strategic mobility and simultaneous carry potential and engage potential. He's not the best carry, he's not the best engage tank and he's not the most mobile, but he does it all.

Too bad his numbers are just so trash.

Athenes Lulu2 votes

Nah.

Everything else looks boring or too mechanically intensive to me, with the exception of Sona, Raka, Nami, and Janna, all going botlane. But again, that's just my opinion.

I love annoying the enemy team because that's pretty much Lulu's job: to annoy people!

I read your first sentence and decided to reply, Yes I do get very bored playing the same champion over and over. I used to be a Wukong one trick back in season 2 til I got bored of playing him. I still play him the most every season but since season 3-5 I have learnt how to play every top lane in the game from Kassadin to Jayce, to Wukong to Irelia, to Zed to Karma, and Darius to Maokai. I play them all now, which is fun... learning all the different matchups, learning powerspikes of every champion. Its good to learn cause itll make you a better main of your champion. Since I know all the powerspike of every champion I can abuse them with Wukong. The more info you have the better, and this way also stop you from getting counteredpick in ranked, if I see youre getting countered like a Janna or a Lee Sin/Renkton top, I can opt out and play something else.

The only reason I stopped playing Veigar is because of how useless they are right now. What I'm hoping is for the mage update to buff mages back into the mid lane instead of the support role. Make AP items cost less and made more effective, and perhaps new AP items.

Shonjl1 votes

How are mages worthless? Some of the highest winrate mids are Lux, Morgana and I am pretty sure Brand/Velkoz/Malz are up there too.

Sure Zed is played a lot atm but when isn't he?

Virgin Ray1 votes

I don't think Velkoz is a high win rate. I can see how Lux is. But that's about it.

Annie ADC1 votes

Have about 465k on Annie I honestly cannot say how I do not get bored (especially with such a simple champ), just sorta happens I guess. Perhaps it helps that she has a diverse build path, and before Dynamic Queue, I was willing to play her in any role (slight diversity?)

DorkunedAuras1 votes

go into the client, look up the player "Annie Bot".

They have a bit more mastery than you on Annie.

Annie ADC1 votes

I'm well aware of Annie Bot and the fact that he has approximately 1.5mil on Annie (last I checked). How is that relevant?

Very Epic Guy1 votes

I don't main a champion as much as a role. I main top lane, and most champions that fall into that category (never Fiora though, I refuse to play her fundamentally).

That said, Sion is probably my absolute favorite because of how much his games can vary. Sometimes you become an unstoppable monster-tank, sometimes you end up hitting like a damn space shuttle. That and his kit is just generally interesting and fun to use.

Only Play Darius1 votes

Did you ever play old Fiora? She was the greatest fuck-you to squishy top laners not named Teemo. She's what we need right now with all these ADC's growing balls and going toplane.

Yep, not sure why they reworked her before someone like Taric -_-

As someone who has over 2k games with Leona, she's just really fun

Also she's my dream champion, it's like Volty and IronStylus crawled into my head and picked my favorite things in video games and threw them all into one champion. I never tire of playing her and I likely won't ever. She will always be my favorite champion, hands down ^^

Melledoneus1 votes

It's less about playing exclusively that champion and more relying on them to be your best pick, or your favorite pick.

For example, I'm a Shen main. But if I feel like it, I'll play Sion or go Braum support. Hell, I'll play Talon or Viktor, maybe even Vlad sometimes. Most people change up their champion pool, and they don't always get the role they want, even if it's support (yes, I know, shocking). You change up your playstyle every so often to make playing your main champion refreshing, since it's both familiar and not as repetitive.

Also, I'd love to play with you! My username shouldn't be much of a mystery.

Only Play Darius1 votes

Well in ranked you should only play your mains. Although I agree I don't understand people who spam champs they have already mastered in normals.

However, there are some champions that you can play all day and still not get bored because they are that fun. Yasuo and Darius come to mind

Korillo1 votes

Yes I always get bored eventually, need to change it up. I actually kind of like the old solo queue because I never knew what position I would get. Sure, I would usually prefer top but I was usually fine with filling, and I had 1-2 champions that I would typically play in each role, with 1-2 more backups incase they were picked/banned.

It's also nice playing the comfort picks though, so it's definitely nice have a main.

I can't really main a champion and play them every single game for too long or I'd get bored of them. I like playing Nami the most, but I'm most comfortable with playing supports that can heal, so sometimes I'll pick Soraka or Sona instead, or Taric if I have an Ezreal ADC (it happens pretty often so I get my fair share of Taric as well)

I pretty much never get anything besides support these days, but for top, mid and ADC (I don't jungle) I just try to have a pool of 3-4 champions I know I can use well for those lanes.

GhastlyGhoulMan1 votes

I like champs that have a very unique personality. For example... champs that are way cooky (Bard), over-the-top sadistic (Veigar), or super dry humor/ playstyle (Nasus) are great. Also, Quinn because I feel like Sonic whenever I play as her. So much fun. :)

Hyrum Graff1 votes

I don't play exclusively one champ, but I do have a relatively small champ pool (that I've been working to enlarge for the past year or so).

It's because I take a REALLY long time to pick up champion mechanics, and my APM is rather low so playing highly mechanical champions is even harder for me. When I first played draven (note: I currently don't play draven), it was on a level 11ish smurf. I tryharded.. and still lost handily. That bad.

So, when I find a champ who I like, I tend to spam them over and over again to where I know them like the back of my hand, because that's how I can play well, period.

I get my fun out of playing those champions in different lanes, with different builds, in different team comps and different matchups. Any champion I own, I've probably tried in 4/5 lanes and regularly play in 2-3 lanes depending on the champ. Examples:

Orianna mid, top, supp, apc bot Soraka supp, mid, top; pre-rework, tank carry bot, solo bot, jungle. Sion top, mid, jungle, support Ashe all roles Malzahar Mid, top, supp (yes I know I need to try him jg)

getting the picture? ;)

Yasuo I don't know about other people, but I just never get tired of this guy. Especially now with S6 changes, item diversity for Yasuo opened up a TON, instead of the Shiv -> IE -> Bork/BT he's been stuck to since forever. His E alone is an ability you can never really get down perfectly, never mind the rest of his kit. He also is a decent champ to learn different parts of the game with. His Q and E make wave management really easy, which is one of the most important fundamentals of the game and translates to pretty much every other champion. How gank-prone he is makes you ward and keep your eyes on the minimap all the time. Honestly, even if I go 0/6 in lane the rest of the game is still enjoyable because you know exactly what went wrong and you can better yourself from it. Oh yeah, all the QQ I get is also a plus.

Jungle Lux God1 votes

You can play a champion a lot and still not consider that champion your main. You also don't need to be constantly playing a champion to consider that champion your main.

A main is a character that you rely on when you want to win, whether there is money on the line or you just want to win your bronze 4 promos. There's nothing that says that you need to play your main in every game.

I'll use myself as an example. I main Nautilus. I spent Season 5 almost exclusively playing normals. Whether I was flexing my jungle champion pool, trying out crazy stuff like full tank jungle Fiddlesticks or jungle Brand, or just having fun with my favorite champions, I played a lot of different stuff that kept the game fresh. But when I did my placement matches in the final weekend before the season ended, I played my placement matches, and in almost all of them I played Nautilus, almost exclusively in the jungle. I proceeded to go something along the lines of 8-2 or 7-3, and got placed into Silver II. I played all my fun stuff in normals, but when it mattered in ranked I played my main because I needed to do well.

This doesn't include the fact that many players pick their main because that champion is someone that the player enjoys so much that they would be comfortable playing with all the time. I personally would be very happy in playing Nautilus game after game if I had to, although I don't do that because I also like playing other stuff too.

Also, you don't have to play your main the same way every game. I personally learned how to play Nautilus in the jungle, top, and support, and also learned how to play many of my secondaries in more than one role as well, so I can get quite a bit of variety when I play the champions within my champion pool even when I play the same champion over and over again.

BADWOLF95471 votes

Dude same. I can never answer the question "Who do you main". Every few weeks I buy a new champ and I play the crap out of them, then they just become one of my normal picks.

Quepha1 votes

I main a champ because I want to win. If I'm not playing ranked then I'll try something different but it's disrespectful to your teammates to pick something you don't know how to play in ranked.

DalyMary1 votes

No. Because that champion is so weird and you can use his abilities in many circumstances. Also different builds. And feeding is fun :D
